Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

I actually think it looks significantly more comfortable than the current 3ds models (especially the triggers) it's just ugly and not pocketable

Eh, 3DS XL is very comfortable. I don't think the 2DS will beat it in that regard, but of course I could be wrong.

As for pocketability, well, I can't remember a very pocketable handheld since the Game Boy Micro.

PSP Go was pretty small.

Good idea, but I don't like that design at all. For kids, adults, anyone. Cutting 3d for costs seems good. I don't know anyone clamoring for a 2 screen non clamshell design. Throughout the DS lifetime, it sold gang busters with kids and I never heard of an outcry to lose the clam shell (and reduce portability)

The shift of the controls to the top screen seems to cement Nintendos neutering of the second screen. It's like they never want to see the touch screen used for much. The d pad seems equally orphaned. Then you don't improve weight, battery life or screen size? What a wasted opportunity.

I am afraid that we will start to see some 3DS games NOT in 3D ( like the Pokemon x/y demo, it wasn't always in 3D , only during the battles)

I hope it fully uses its power though, if it comes to that.

My 4 and 6 year olds navigate my XL just fine to play New Leaf, however, I could see this as a viable alternative if the parents didn't play as well. The XL is just a nicer system when it's played by everyone in the family.

At this point point they might as well sell Wii U tablet controllers as stand alone 2DS' and simulate the dual screen.

No, you want a cheap device that can play pokemon X & Y. I mean, not you as in a gaffer, but parents of children that want the new pokemon thing.

The screen size though... what is it, 1.81 inches tall? It's like a postage stamp. That's not good for kids, and not good for watching your friend play.

Here's the thing

You don't have to buy it if you don't want to.

This came as a complete surprise. If they hadn't announced it, would you still be complaining?

Also, Nintendo will have 2 revisions out before the next-gen consoles release. That shit cray.

This thing is legitimately one of the most hideous gaming consoles I've ever seen.

It's like they got the guys who made the Wii Mini and the Frankenstick together and tasked them with making the most hideous thing they possibly could, and this is the result.

No one is buying a 2DS just to play Pokemon except the hardcore fans. Doubt some young kid will get a device and game with a combine 160$ price tag so easily. Might do well in Xmas a gift compared to the more models in store. Still depends on parents.

People will buy it not just hardcore. Pokemon is not the only game on the system. 3DS has a flurry of games boy

Kids have birthdays as well. A 2ds for $130 would be very tempting to get for a kid over a tablet, considering the price difference. Hell, the 2ds is cheaper than a kindle fire hd.

I just wasted my entire night reading this thread from start to finish.

wasted?

The original DS looked worse IMO.

Nintendo products are getting really confusing with the names.

DS
DSlite
DSi
DSiXL

3DS
3DSXL
2DS

Wii
Wii mini

WiiU

Letters don't mean a new generation, numbers don't mean a new generation. Wii looks very similar to the WiiU, 3DS looks more similar to the DS than the 2DS, yet the 2DS plays 3DS games, but not in 3D. It is a freaking disaster

So this is what Nintendo has been spending time designing over a 2nd analog revision.

There's not a small amount of irony to play Mario 3D Land on a 2DS; almost enough to get me to buy one just to do exactly that.

It's like a reverse GBA situation. They started with the sexy clamshell and worked their way down to the ugly flat one later on.

If it was the same form factor as the 3DS but minus the 3D that I dont care for at all after using one for an extended period of time I would have gotten one for cheap. Also why the hell cant the release one with 2 analog sticks...good luck attaching a CPP to this abomination.

I can't understand GAF sometimes.

People complain that it's too unconfortable to hold while press who actually tried it say otherwise. Many sites who tried said it's actually nice to hold and very comfortable, so no need for bitching for no reason. People complained about Wii U Gamepad for same reason.

As for the consumer confusion; it's always been there. There will be confusion but this will hurt no one. People ask for its specific games, find out there are none and buy whatever playable with it. Perhaps some people go directly digital with this thing. Same confusion existed with iPhone/iPad, Gameboy/GBP/GBC, SNES/N64, GBA/DS and PSP/PSPGo.

2DS is a spiritual successor to the Nintendo DS

This is actually really cool. My son loves playing with my 3DS, but I would never get him one of his own because little boys break shit. Plus I already lock out the 3D from him. And 129 is nothing, I'll definitely be getting one of these day one for him.

This is a surprising announcement. I don't like the 3D on my 3DS particularly, but I didn't think they'd actually abandon it on the same platform, I just thought it wouldn't be a part of their next platform.

Anyway I don't think this is a good idea, I think it wont be attractive to the majority of parents. I think its destined to sell very poorly.
