GameStop managers get free XB1, PS4 and 7 games

If this is true, looks like Gamestop is on its last leg.

This could be a huge short term thing for Sony. But it shows desperation for GameStop, to get them to promote a particular system.

I really would like physical media to continue to exist. But just like music and film, that experience of midnight game sales is dying. It sucks, but I would venture to guess that in the next 5 years GameStop stores arr reduced by half. And in the 5 years after that, they will become another Blockbuster.

This is either a really elaborate troll or you're jumping to conclusions as if the world was swept from under you're feet. This happens at gamestop all the time. It happened with the ps3 as well, just not right away. And as some one suggested, the managers(the smart ones) use these as incentive for the employees. We have competitions(for instance, highest reserve % for the month) at our store for instance when our manger gets stuff.

So this is not an attempt for a company to motivate sales for a certain product? And GameStop is not fearful of a digital future? I find nothing wrong with what Sony is doing, and. I am sure MS and Nintendo have done equally squarilly shit in the past. But really I am the elaborate troll?

Gamestop Managers or Gamestop store managers? When i worked at gamestop the managers there barely got any hours and were barely above an associate.

If those managers are smart, they'll use them as incentives to keep employees motivated through launch and black friday.

But it's gamestop, so most of them will keep it and wonder why they have so many problems getting people to fill shifts.

So much truth here it hurts.

As much shit as store managers deal with this still isn't enough. Little to no payroll and they work 50+ hours a week. During this Christmas they won't even have time to play too many work days lol

God, I wish that were a PS4 version of Beyond. I'd buy it in a heart beat. The PS4 is the only thing stopping me from getting it for PS3 actually.

I know it's going to be one of those games you'll want to play again eventually, and having it on PS4 would guarantee it (not to mention that graphical upgrade!).

As a former manager at GameStop I will agree with those saying no amount of free products would ever get me to work there again. The amount of garbage store managers have to put up with is totally not worth it. As many know GameStop puts all their focus on subs and reserves. If you don't meet these goals then you either won't be managing long or they will make your life hell trying to meet your goals. I had the highest grossing store in my city and was still getting written up for not getting reserves to their liking. They are also required to work 6 day work weeks during the holiday. They are salary so they get no extra pay.

As for the conference, most retailers hold a manager's conference. This is a holiday prep meeting for managers to take the information back to their staff. It's not the most enjoyable 3 days either. Your typical day is over 12 hours and its filled with classes by publishers showing old videos at inhumane decibel levels or GameStop run classes about how to prepare for the holiday.

They feed you like crap. The hotel usually can't accommodate 4000 managers all moving to the same location at the same time and you are usually too tired to actually try and enjoy Vegas at night. Especially for us east coasters trying to adjust to the time difference.

Just to give an idea of what their typical schedule is:

7 am Breakfast
8 am Presentation by a major publisher
9 am - 12 pm Classes
12 pm Lunch
1 pm Another presentation by a major publisher
2 pm - 5 pm More classes
5 pm dinner
6 pm Yet another presentation

Usually the last day is split between their vendor show when they get to try the games and a half day of GameStop classes.

TLDR - Being a GameStop manager sucks.

Huh, I was at an EB Games earlier and an employee (I'm guessing the manager) mentioned this. Thought he was bullshitting. That's pretty sweet.

Lord above, please let the stoner assholes I gave my store application to last week hire me then recognize my talents of actually being able to do a job properly and allow me to lead them after two months (then I quit and get a respectable job after receiving my payola)

They won't. They have huge filing cabinets full of applications so unless you know someone, yeah no chance of getting noticed.

Haha, I applied at a local mall EB (now GameStop) straight out of high school 6 or 7 years ago and was called in for an interview without knowing anyone there, I was amazed they called. I didn't get the job; but I agree with you, getting a job at GameStop or even Best Buy requires a push from someone working there. Looking back I'm glad as I ended up with a better job at the college I was attending. People, there's better jobs out there where you'll be able to afford a PS4, Xbox One, and still have time to play games at home in the holidays.

Store managers. ASMs and SGAs don't go to the annual conference.

Free Xbox One too!!! Shit's getting crazy. This gen...

This is trade marketing, or a 'below-the-line' investment to enhance retail level staff to be knowledgable about your products, and build loyalty towards the brand/product, to sway any CIFM-type consumers. ( Choose It for Me )

Extremely common business practice for major multinationals.

In many ways, it's no different from all those buntings, point-of-sale material, posters, cardboard cut-outs, statues, and all the marketing material that retail shops get to brand their stores come launch of a new AAA-game.

Those stuff are ridiculously expensive, you know. Marketing department spend many many sleepless nights developing very very small stuff ( like posters, standees, etc), work very closely with distributors and agencies to make sure it is all well utilised on-ground, and go to grounds to ensure that all retail staff are motivated to sell the products.

Can someone explain what is the reason they are giving the GS managers free systems? Aren't there hundreds of Gamestop locations across the country isn't this going to eat into their initial shipment by a big chunk?

Yes and yes but giving away systems to mangers has nothing to do with a "digital future" and I find nothing wrong with it either. You just went so left field there sir.

It's a marketing expense and it's not as bad as it as sounds. Gamestop has actually fired a lot of managers recently and has forced the remaining managers to manage 2 or 3 stores without any pay increase. So I say they've earned a free video game.
