Why do you think Xbox fans are downplaying Indie games? Nice to see some perspective in print, thanks.

The blade was cool...for all of five minutes. Darkness 2 wasn't half bad, so credit where it's due I guess. Wasn't a patch on the first game though, but had its charms.

Yeah, I like a bit of open world Tentacle bursting. Nothing beats jumping through the window of an NPCs house and terrifying them to death.

Plus Starbreeze are genuinely awesome, so it was gonna be hard to top.

You're not even listing everything. That list pales in comparison to the overall avalanche of indie/f2p and retail exclusives coming to PS4. I defy anyone to even try and downplay PS4's gaming lineup. It blows away the competition.

It really pissed me off when people write off Indie games as "lesser" titles compared to AAA games. Fucking shitty mentality right there, I bet N++ will be a hell of a lot more fun than Ryse (shitty QTE-fest) or Watch_Dogs (AC boring missions with a Cellphone) or some other overblown AAA with pretty visuals and dogshit gameplay. Frankly none of the so-called AAA launch games for either PS4 or Xbox One look all that great, it's the awesome looking Indie titles that are the most exciting games in the launch window.

what are you waiting for
Digital Extremes has been quite vocal about getting Warframe on as many platforms as quickly as they can. They were clear upfront that the PS4 version would be out on launch. They've also said that they would have liked to be out on XB1 at launch, but MS's indie program prevented them from releasing it at all.

Now they can release Warframe onXB1 because of MS's new id@Xbox program (or whatever it's called). However, that program has only been in the works for a few months or so, and not only are many of the relevant details still being worked out, many of the features promised by the program won't be available at launch.

Until this program gets into a functioning state, Warframe and other self-published games cannot be released on XB1. I'm sure they will release the second that MS gives them the green light, but Digital Extremes is unsure when that will be.

What they're really reminding people of here is "We're not going to be PS4 exclusive forever, but we don't exactly know how long we will be.

I'm only counting titles that are released after launch, through Spring 2014.

I think LocoCycle and that sequel to Max and the Magic Marker (something like that, announced at either the original reveal or atE3) will be out on XB1 by then.

Something I don't understand at the moment is that one of the requirements of ID@Xbox is release day parity, as noted in this Gamasutra article and elsewhere. So surely that rules out late ports? Would be nice to know how devs plan to work around that.

Sony's nonchalant attitude when it comes to not locking down exclusives really irritates me.

It's self published, what do you expect them to do? Moneyhatting devs to keep content off competitor consoles is stupid and IMO bad for the industry when that money could alternatively be invested into something more productive.

Smh... You people do realize this was never a paid "exclusive" right? Only reason it's only been shown on PS4 first is because of Sony being more open as far as F2P policies goes. And also faster devkit allocation.

Is there confirmation of this? I'm not being snarky, I honestly don't know.

I see the Xbots amusing themselves over a f2p game which was never billed as exclusive anyway as it has been on pc already. I would laugh if it turns out Titanfall is only a 3 month exclusive as well, as we don't know any details because Ms have banned the devs from mentioning other platform versions.
Keep that shit on N4G son

Yup, I remember loving my 360 when it had a ton of great indie games. Then they took their foot off the gas and Sony started to catch up, with next-gen they are now way behind.

It mattered then and it matters now more than ever.

That's one of the reasons why I switched from PS3 to 360 in 2009. The PS Store was a barren desert back then. Even a game like UNO brings back memories from those days.

The article in the OP...

In fact, Digital Extremes admitted a couple of months ago that it was now looking into bringing the game to Microsoft's console following the company's shift in attitude to indies.

The company's VP of publishing Meridith Braun told the site, "We're happy to see Microsoft shift its attitude on independent development for their new system. We'd be silly not to consider Warframe for Xbox One now. The system itself will be awesome and now the landscape of games that it supports has just become limitless. Exciting times."

Seems it was down to the decision by MS to allow self publishing more than anything else.

I just read that linked article, and it seems like the obvious answer is that specific part of the policy, once implemented, will only apply to games that have yet to be released on console at all. I really doubt they would simply turn all the current games away when the policy comes out.

Here's a more current article from the War Thunder devs on how MS still haven't locked down F2P strategies and how to support those titles: http://www.edge-online.com/news/gaijin-games-on-why-war-thunder-isnt-coming-to-xbox-one/

Did you assess Xbox One as a potential platform?

AY: Microsoft… they have yet to decide how they’re doing online free-to-play and self-published games. They’re pretty far from that, even with their latest initiative.

Does any of the things they’ve been saying in the last few months about self-publishing and patching and so on, does any of that change your attitude towards Xbox One?

AY: They need to stop talking and start basically doing something. Because right now you need to certify your servers with Microsoft, you need to make… it’s not yet clear if there will be updates. If you can’t make updates without Microsoft [approval] they ruin the idea of online gaming, basically. They’ve said there’ll be some kind of opportunity [for that] but haven’t yet said quite exactly how it’ll be working.

Kiril Yudsintsev: No cross-platform.

AY: No cross-platform is allowed on Xbox. Cross-platform multiplayer. So the Xbox One ecosystem will be small at the beginning of the cycle. I hope some day Microsoft will be there.

Is there confirmation of this? I'm not being snarky, I honestly don't know.
Been following this game for a while and I think it has everything to do with MS doing a 180 on self-publishing. Before that Warframe was all about the PS4. After the about face DE said they'd be interested in putting the game on the bone.

Looks like thats exactly what happened.

Edit: Yeah, what Miles Quaritch said. ;P

They didn't take their foot off the gas, they were just the only game in town for indies in 2006 so indie developers put up with shit policies like patching fees and required exclusive content to be on 360. They kept their foot on the gas but forgot to turn the wheel as the (don't nickel and dime your indie developers) cliff was approaching and they drove off. Now they're getting respawned back onto the track to start driving again.

Yeah that's probably right. The other way I thought it might work is if devs add some Xbox exclusive content and say it's a special edition. Like Joe Danger on XBLA.

Sony's nonchalant attitude when it comes to not locking down exclusives really irritates me.

Not throwing wads of money at other developers allows them to instead spend the money on cultivating in-house development studios.

Throwing money at exclusive deals is just wasteful IMO when you could just have fantastic studios that produce outstanding exclusive content because you own the studios.

While I somewhat agree - Microsoft should've had their indie strategy in place long before revealing the system - there are a couple of things to point out. First, we're not sure which Xbox One games will be launching in Q1 2014; I can already tell you you're forgetting Kinect Sports Rivals and, well, Titanfall. But even more importantly, with such a huge number of indie games launching on PS4 in such a short amount of time, and to such a low expected user base, how many of them realistically stand a chance of making money on the platform? I'm afraid we're looking at a sizable list of bombas there, which could have long-reaching consequences.

His list excludes all published and/or retail titles though. You're talking about Kinect Sports Rivals and Titanfall not being on his list.

This is ONLY a list of games that are either f2p or SELF published.

And when viewing that list, MS needs to get their policies in place.

And it's not like the PS4 is the only place to get these indie titles. Nearly all of them are also available on PC. This is simply another place to get them so it shouldn't specifically impact their sales just because the PS4 is a new system with a low install base and lots of games available.

XBO is simply missing out on titles that are available on PC, PS4 and even sometimes Wii-U.

And even if their indie policy plans come to fruition, it still causes some f2p games to not be f2p because of the Gold lock-out. That only hurts f2p developers who are providing a free game to play and only get their revenue from in-game purchases.

They want release day parity? That's rich coming from a company, whose MO is to pay for timed exclusives, that lock 3rd party games out of the reach of others.

He was referring to only indie games. Also, I think that's the reason PS Plus will be greater than ever. More indie devs than ever before wanting the coverage and downloads.

It's never been an exclusive. It was simply "coming to PS4." Seems like it was because Sony sought out the developer, allow for true F2P games outside the paywall, and have a machine that's pretty easy to program for (Digital Extremes have mentioned the last one in interviews). In other words, they have a good ecosystem that is attracting development. That's good! This is just one in a long list of the upcoming fruits of Sony's efforts. See Chubigan's list above for more. Warframe and all other "F2P" games will be paywalled on the XB1 anyway.

Remember when the 360 had a shit ton of Arcade games and PS3 had zip?
Yep! It was a great time. XLBA is the reason I'm buying a PS4, if that makes any sense. The kinds of cool little digital games I love that used to be on the 360 seem like they'll be overflowing on PlayStation platforms in the next couple of years.

I see N++ on that list. Is that a follow up to the frankly amazing and very underrated N+? I'm also surprised Contrast isn't coming to the One, it's coming to 360 last I checked unless they decided to move development to next gen...

It still may hurt the future appeal of the platform, and perhaps even consoles in general. As simple and cheap as the porting process may be, it's still time and money spent on low returns. Once the thrill of having your game published on a major console wears off, some of those developers may rethink their strategy.

XBO is simply missing out on titles that are available on PC, PS4 and even sometimes Wii-U.

I agree, that was an oversight on Microsoft's part, although I'm positive that the majority of those games will come to Xbox One sometime in 2014. Looking at the big picture, it's just a small bump at launch, going forward the field will be leveled if Microsoft are really as serious about self-publishing as they claim.

I'm sure no one actually expected it to be exclusive to PS4 on consoles

I guess the timed amount is good to know though

There's exclusivity by default though. It's how the 360 was able to get a number of games exclusively (timed or otherwise) on the 360 at the start of the this generation, they launched earlier than Sony and so this allowed them in getting games exclusively by default.

This appears to be happening with the PS4/One, but this time Microsoft's backwards policies towards self publishing (which they have changed, albeit somewhat late) are playing as big a role as developers not having One dev kits.

YES! It was the best announcement at Gamescom that almost no one here seemed to care about. N++ is my most wanted PS4 title this year, it's going to be spectacular. They're completely re-doing the visuals in the game, thousands of levels, level editor and sharing features, leaderboards, everything. The definitive version of N.

Don't worry, most of those PSN titles are going to be day 1's for me. There are so many games I want on PS4 it's ridiculous. I love it.

So, do you need Gold to be ab;e to play F2P? Do we know that yet?

It's like that on 360 or else I would play that Happy game on 360 more.
