I wish there weren't all the stories about how Rockstar handles review scores. It is getting high scores from outlets I trust, but there's still a pall over all the scores. I don't really doubt it is a good game, but it'd be nice if you didn't have to think in the back of your mind that some of it was influenced by how aggressively Rockstar cultivates review scores. Especially when it seems like the games can probably speak for themselves just fine.

Loved the Rev 3 review. My hype is officially through the roof. Only thing left to do is kill the next few hours.

I am ok with Gamespot lowering their score because "the story it uses that structure to tell is hobbled at times by inconsistent character behavior, muddled political messages and rampant misogyny." It's just that the examples given are all obvious Rockstar style satire.

But still a great review. Can't wait for this.

I queued up about 8-10 reviews in background tabs -- honestly they all basically blurred together (though i knew I was reading Polygon because THINGS WERE MOVING).

However, reading Sterling's review made me appreciate him as a writer. Heads and shoulders in writing style above the other reviews. A fun read with beats and pace.

Does it contain any spoilers? I know Adam Sessler includes a lot of cutscenes in his reviews like he did with TLoU.

Seems a bit unfair to review the game without GTA Online. Ah well, great scores regardless.

This will review lower than GTA IV but we all know deep down that it’ll be the better game.....

Some people just want to watch Gaf burn.

Why? Jeff thought GTA4 was the best of the best when it came out.
Yes but Saints Row 3 and 4 happened since GTA IV came out and I thought those games might affect how he felt about GTA these days. Either I was flat out wrong or GTA V is just a really great game.

(Hey, I said I was only a little surprised.)

Sucks that the story seems like it's a bit off. But then again I also felt the story in RDR was a bit weak, it had some really strong moments, but a lot of weak parts. And RDR is my game of the generation for now. For story I'll just stick with TLOU, my current #2. Or maybe GTA5 will surprise me.

This has always been an issue I had with the series, for all the fun sandoboxy things you can do the main missions are usually pretty linear and scripted.

Ya agreed.
In this one they seem to have more sandbox moments in their main missions which is nice as it seems to be far more robust than previous games. However when scripting comes up it harsh and instantly noticeable:(

Because it's not perfect. Like virtually every other game ever released.

perfect score =/= perfect game

what's the point of a subject scale if you don't fully use it.

if it is the best game of all time than it should get the highest achievable rating, otherwise stop using sensationalist headlines in your reviews

Man .... it does not seem like anyone is willing to go off the deep end and give this game even an 8. Don't think I have ever seen that yet.

And this is with no online mode yet. They will probably do a 2nd round of reviews come October 1st and review the online mode

i agree it looks better, but GTA4 undoubtedly lessens the impact (for at least this gen) of open-world games, therefore the game can be better, and the score worse...

It is still a mish-mash average of opinions, either way. What matters is that it is still being well received and that it is clearly a far better effort than it's predecessor, regardless of what number ends up sitting beside it on a website from the average of said reviews.

Seems it's better this time around. GamesTM:

More notable, actually, is the way missions take advantage of the sandbox – stealth and action-based approaches are both on the cards in a lot of scenarios, and the missions of this nature are fairly open-ended in the way the player can kill their way to the finish line. The kind of scenarios we ordinarily had to wait until the final third for in previous GTA installments, those involving aircraft, insane firearms and continuous chaos, are prevalent throughout Grand Theft Auto V.

I'm excited but when they say the story is worse then Niko's it kinda makes me sad. I never cared much for Niko's story. Maybe I'm in the minority.

I knew the criticism was going to be pathetic, both in volume and in aim, but my god...

That Polygon review is absolutely atrocious.

Does any review adress platform performance differences?

I am trying to dig the info without success for days.

Yes, I want to know this as well. Did Rockstar finally figure out the PS3, or will this be a repeat of the drastic visual differences from GTA4 and Red Dead? I would like to get it for my PS3, but if it's similar to those others, I'll end up with the 360 version.
