DF article GTA V - X360 vs PS3

I'm not upscaling, my tv is native 1080p it always upscales if shit comes in at 720p which is what gta5 is coming in at according to my display info despite my ps3 being set at 1080p.

My TV must be different then. It's 1080p native resolution too but it does not do upscaling on it's own. Whatever signal is broadcast to it is what the TV presents. My PS3 menu comes in at 1080p, but then if I play something like The Last of Us, it switches to 720p.

Is the Playstation 4 backwards compatible? My PS3 died some time ago but i feel like playing the PS3 version now.

Might as well play it on PS4 then.

Yea, that is weird. Xbox pretty clearly has about a 2fps advantage over the PS3 version on average.

Not that this makes much difference in the end, but its definitely not what its in the article.
They said the frame rate swings in favour of both platforms depending on the activity.

No. Although there is a streaming system being put in place by Gakai I believe?

Why are you upscaling? Upscaling is balls.

This is a 720p game. If your TV is 1080p you don't have a choice.

Your TV is still upscaling it. It's just telling you what the resolution is of the signal it's receiving.

So if i have a 1080p 55" tv, should i change the settings on my ps3 to 720p and let the tv do the rest?

Nope, just leave it like it is.

Your 1080p TV is upscaling every 720p signal it receives unless the image is a small 1280x720 image in the center of the screen with a black border filling the rest of the screen.

I think everyone forgets, that a 1080p TV must upscale if it gets signals below that resolution.
Otherwise you would have black borders around the wohle picture.

Edit: Beaten

I'm glad the thread figured out what I meant before I had to explain it. I also think the 360's upscaler does a better job than the upscaler on a lot of hdtv's so it might be a better option to go 360 for people with televisions with bad internal upscalers.

Gotta love the "hahaha PS3 is winnar" posts. Reading the article seems to indicate negligible differences, other than the ground texture issue. But I guess those that own PS3 exclusively need to claim their scare multi-platform related victories when they can.

.

because on the past xbox users dont use these tactis ..right?

This makes me beyond happy.

It's good for both console owners that it is a very close contest - but I'm so excited and thrilled that I chose the PS3 version.

The PS3 really is gong out with a bang!

Can I get some pepper with that salt?

I'm not sure that's been true for at least a couple of years now. Most TVs have great upscaling built right in that is at least as good as, if not better than the 360's older tech.

Go to 2:20 in the video. Watch the scene. When the action actually starts the 360 drops as low as 18 FPS. If your GTA game play is anything like mine, then you will be experiencing quite a bit of that type of action.

Still getting 360 version, makes no sense to get the ps3 version when I'm selling it when I get my ps4 in 2 months.

So installing to usb alleviates the blurry ground textures compared to ps3? Or are the ground texture in general just worse?

I'm aware of the issues installing both discs, with regards to pop in.

This is just a proof that PS3 is more powerful than X360 once you understand its bizzare cell.

I admit that I expected DF to give this to 360 no matter what...they deserve an apology from me.
I'm sorry ..

Only on the internet... only on the internet...

Anyway, to address the actual article. Go read it and watch the video comparisons. Dont just read people on this thread's opinion (they probably didnt read/watch) If you can see a noticeable difference, more power to you, get that version.

After watching all the videos it became very obvious that they are pretty much the same.
So the only factors I see are preferred controller and who you want to play online with.
Rockstar appears to have done a good job with GTAV across the board. I was honestly worried that it would not look as good as the initial trailers, relieved to see I was worried for not.

It doesn't look as good as the initial trailers. IQ is lower, framerate is lower.

I had the same texture and geometry pop-in issues with the PSN version. If you're getting the PS3 version, get the disc one. This game is obviously optimized to stream from two places at once.

I wonder if an upgraded HD would help. I've got a Seagate Momentus XT (Hybrid SSD + regular, doesn't feel a ton faster). You on the stock drive?

I would get the version that I had the majority of friends on. Or if you have a controller preference. With that said, when there is a substantial amount going on the 360 does drop lower. PS3 does the same thing in cut scenes.

even lower

Damn.

It doesn't look as good as the initial trailers. IQ is lower, framerate is lower.

Who is honestly surprised by this though? I have never seen a trailer that is an actual representation of game-play.

Particles have always been the strength of the playstation brand it feels like (Zone of enders <3) . Guess thats from always pushing the CPU.

Glad the PS3 version is decent. I wasn't expecting miracles, but this game has a robust online mode and I stopped paying for Gold a few months ago so that had already solidified my decision unless this article ended up completely trashing the PS3 version.

First trailer was really incredible. Maybe that`s the PC version. I do like how it looks (from youtube videos) on current consoles though. Super impressive engine.

Great to hear that they are on par with each other. Not that I've had any trouble playing any other Rockstar game on my PS3.

possibly, but its pretty close and that's good enough for me.

I've seen tons. Just not from 95% of developers. Those that show real footage instead of high end PC builds get shit on. That's why when consoles are revealed it's 95% bullshit footage all around. Because people expect it.

GTA V has nowhere near the IQ or butter-smooth framerates (and less pop-in) than what the trailers showed. Doesn't mean it looks like donkey shit or anything (it doesn't) but it's not close to the trailers.

I'm getting the PS3 version, but those scenes aren't identical so I'm not sure if it's the best comparison. I mean, ideally you'd run the same scene many times and find the average framerates to rule out anomalies.

You need to watch the video, the action is the same. Nowhere in that scene does the PS3 dip to 16fps.

Did you try forcing 720p in the display options under system settings? You have to uncheck everything but 720p. Stupid system(it should ask what you want to use) but that's how it is.

His TV will still upscale it to 1080p if it has a fixed resolution.

360 version 720P - (free roam - no spoilers)

I think that looks fine for 6 year old hardware.

Don't know what people were expecting.

Yeah, there are some slight delays there. The 360 definitely goes lower as 16 is the lowest I see either hitting in that scene but the PS3 dropped to 20 during the same explosions. So 16/24 isn't really the comparison, it's 16/20 which is still a decent lead.

But, having an overall higher framerate for driving, flying, cruising around in general works for me. Honestly I don't think I'd even be able to tell the difference between the two without the numbers there for reference.

The scenes play out slightly differently. My point is that there's a lot of things that can affect framerate in a game like this (like if a dynamic explosion happens slightly differently, resulting in more rigidbody contacts to compute because more debris happens to be touching each other -- or processes happening in the background that aren't reflected on screen) and it's not necessarily going to give you the same results every time so it'd be more accurate if they played the same scenes many times and found averages. I'm not claiming the PS3 version doesn't have the edge or not and like I said, I've already bought the PS3 version so I'd hope that version is best.

Typical COD gamer
I watched a few LP videos and I'm baflled at how bad this game looks on both consoles. I'm gonna wait for the PC or nextgen version.
