NINTENDO GIVES CONSUMERS A CHANCE TO GET FIT FOR FREE WITH WII FIT U

Wii Sports Club Delivers a New Wii Sports Experience on Wii U

REDMOND, Wash., Sept. 18, 2013 – Nintendo is offering Wii U owners a chance to download a full version of Wii Fit U for free. Starting Nov. 1, Wii U owners can download a complete version of the game and get a head start on their New Year's fitness goals by trying out all the activities found in the game for a full month – at no cost. All users need is a Wii Balance Board and a Wii U system with a broadband Internet connection. Consumers can keep their trial copies of Wii Fit U at no additional cost by simply purchasing and syncing a Fit Meter to the game. Nintendo announced the special offer along with a number of items related to active gaming during a Nintendo Direct video. To view the Nintendo Direct in its entirety, visit http://www.nintendo.com/nintendo-direct.

"Wii Fit U is all about 'fun fitness' for everyone in the family," said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's president and COO. "With this special offer, Nintendo is making it easier than ever for families to get active and stay active, making now the perfect time to upgrade to Wii U. This is another example of the kind of value and variety that only Nintendo can offer."

The full Wii Fit U software will be downloadable from the Nintendo eShop between Nov. 1, 2013, and Jan. 31, 2014, and will work for a month from the day it is first played. During the trial period, users can stay active with 77 different activities, including 19 new training activities, many of which take advantage of the Wii U GamePad controller. Users who want to continue using Wii Fit U beyond the trial period can purchase a Fit Meter accessory and sync it to their Wii Fit U software at any time. This will allow them to continue playing Wii Fit U forever. The Fit Meter will be available Nov. 1 in black/silver at a suggested retail price of $19.99.

The Fit Meter accessory is much more than a pedometer – it's an activity meter that tracks a wide range of everyday activity. It records not only the number of steps a user has taken, but it also takes into account the intensity of those steps – for example, was the user running or walking? The Fit Meter also measures altitude, so wearers get credit for climbing stairs or walking uphill. All of these data points combined provide users with an accurate overview of their day's activity, including a detailed calculation of the number of calories they burned. This data can then be transferred wirelessly to Wii Fit U via the Wii U GamePad with just a touch of a button. The Fit Meter transforms users' everyday lives into workouts, encouraging them to get active and stay active.

Wii Fit U features all of the strength training, yoga and fun fitness games that have made the Wii Fit series so popular. Plus, there are new games that combine the Wii Balance Board and Wii U GamePad, including new dance routines such as hip-hop and salsa that work out various parts of the body through simple dance moves. The game also gives players more ways to create their own custom workout routines. Users can also create or join a Miiverse Gym Community to share tips and support with other Wii Fit U users who have similar goals. Or people can create closed communities made up exclusively of their friends. The communities will help people stay motivated by giving them a venue to discuss their fitness progress with others.

For those who choose not to participate in this special offer, Wii Fit U launches both as a packaged game on Dec. 13, 2013, and as a full game download in the Nintendo eShop on Feb. 1, 2014.

UPDATE

Fit Meter now available to pre-order at various retailers, including Amazon.ca, EBgames.ca, GameStop.com, NewEgg.com, Amazon.com

This is awesome - I was expecting to pay $60 for the software/hardware combo. I started using the original Wii Fit a few weeks ago and am already seeing results - can't wait to upgrade to the Wii U version.

The tracker seems even more capable than the FitBit Zip which is $50 - I think if this is marketed correctly this could be huge

If I'll be able to get a proper external HDD...:

I'll downlaod it for sure, exploiting the free trial (I alraedy have the balance board)
I'll take a look at the minigames (if entertaining as the Plus ones, I'll bite)
I'll probably end up purchasing the Fit meter

i already own a balance board.

So $20 gets me the game. My Wife and I will use this i'm sure. Maybe we can compete against each other to lose 10-20 pounds~

A big question that I have is what will the download version cost on February 1st, 2014?

$20 is a steal - will it be $20 plus $30 after the intro period is done?

Smart moves by Nintendo. I was just talking to two of my friends about how they would sell Wii Fit U to those who already have it for the Wii + Balance Board.

Probably $40 - $60 like all other Nintendo published Wii U Software with a retail counterpart.

yeah, with this promo the digital version of this game is basically $20 if you already have the balance board.

Since I still have the balance board I'll buy this game for $20, even if I'm not expecting to use it very much.

I don't own the original WiiFit but I managed to get a friend selling me the balance board :) (I wanted to play the Shaun White Snowboard game with that haha)

so I guess for 20 bucks I'll get it for my wife since she's obsessed with this fitness stuff

I like that Nintendo seems to be trying a lot of different things in terms of bringing games to market, pricing and bundling.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
After watching the Direct, it seems the Fit meter will be available in 3 colours. Black, White and red, White and green.

This is a great way to get teens and young adults into it. We like fitness too, just intimidated by the initial $60 and $100 price tags. Those prices are for entire families. For just me and my girlfriend using this casually, $20 is a steal especially with a one month demo to make sure we are going to use it and a new gadget to play with. Most people drop out by that period, too, and Nintendo isn't making those people pay. It's very generous. No doubt that I'm getting this.

It's a smart move to offer the game for free. Price to entry for adult Wii owners with a Balance Board is now as low as the console + a game for the kid.

Nintendo needs to go full guns with both Mario World and WiiFit U this fall. Spend as much in marketing a MS and Sony will, but on soccer moms and kids audiences.

$20 for the game with the meter is GENIUS.

I wonder how much the game would be? This seems like a title that should be digital only...ironically, as you'd burn a quarter calorie changing it. But having it available all the time makes me feel like you may use it more.

This is fucking AWESOME! I was wondering if I'd have to shell out another 60 bucks but this is too great :)

Very excited.

The ability for the Fit Meter to measure altitude may encourage me to take the stairs instead of the elevator at work :p

This is a pretty slick move by nintendo. I think it's definitely the right way for them to go about this inevitable sequel to wii fit. Looking forward to see the sales results when it all settles.

That's a great deal. Not for me, since I don't have a balance board, but it's very smart. Now market, market, market, Nintendo. Advertise this stuff, and you WILL get sales.

Just grabbed this image from the European Direct.

Damn, not quite as Poke ball as I was hoping for :(

Probably will either get red and white or green and white... leaning towards red though.

Is this up for pre-order anywhere yet?

Yeah, that's the important thing. While it won't be the big boom that the original Wii Fit was, as a person who had no interest in the original Wii Fit, the Wii Fit meter actually interests me (and also it helps that I now want to do a bit to try and get a bit more fit, lol).

A bit confused.

I suppose the free version is the same as the final game?

19,99 for the fit meter and you get to keep the free trial forever is pretty great. I just don´t know if it is the same as the final version.

If it is the same I am all in as I have Wii Fit + Balance Board. The Fit Meter adds another dimension to keeping track of fitness activities in a single place. That by itself is themajor selling point IMO. Might need to get 2 Fit Meters one for me and another for the wife.

I am starting to exercise, so this will help me even more, hyped!!

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
This seems a pretty and dynamic move from Nintendo.
This + Wii Sports Club seem to be good attempts by them in exploring several pricing / distribution possibilities.
...Still, I believe 9.99 for each Sport is too much, it should have been 4.99 :D

In Japan, package version (software + fit meter) is 5985 yen and download version is 3500 yen

They did a promotion with Panorama View: buy 3, get the 4th for free. They may do the same here.

I'm guessing that there's no knowledge of the download size yet? This seems like something I'd be interested in keeping on my Wii U without having to change discs, but if it's as large as was made out to be in the Direct, I'll probably lean more towards physical.

Yeah, I just started running, so I think I'll pick up the Fit meter and the free download and work with that for a while. If I want to do more I can always find a balance board online somewhere I'm sure.
