It seems interesting, definitely not what I expected.

It could be super-precise from the sounds and looks of it. I eagerly await impressions!

"The Steam Controller is built around a new generation of super-precise haptic feedback, employing dual linear resonant actuators. These small, strong, weighted electro-magnets are attached to each of the dual trackpads. They are capable of delivering a wide range of force and vibration, allowing precise control over frequency, amplitude, and direction of movement.

This haptic capability provides a vital channel of information to the player - delivering in-game information about speed, boundaries, thresholds, textures, action confirmations, or any other events about which game designers want players to be aware. It is a higher-bandwidth haptic information channel than exists in any other consumer product that we know of. As a parlour trick they can even play audio waveforms and function as speakers."

That certainly sounds intriguing. Again, it would definitely take some getting used to, as there has never been anything like this. Who knows, it may prove to be more efficient than the standard we are currently used to? I'm optimistic.

I can't see this controlling well either. The touch buttons on a phone just feel really weird to use, and I'm sure this will be the similar, albeit more precise.

That and, my god, the controller looks absolutely ugly as hell.

I'll just stick with my wired 360 controller for PC, thanks.

Either way, this some how managed to be even more disappointing than I thought. Silly me for thinking Valve would have a game announcement! Was expecting them to officially announce L4D3 or something.

How do you jump then?

Click the left pad I think.

Guess what, it's a PC, you can use any controller you like. This is just another option. A lot of gaffers are stuck in the console locked in mindset.

Can I play DOTA2 with ... that..?

You probably can. Move Map with Left stick, courser with right stick, put the shops on the touch screen, the shoulder buttons will be the 4 main abilities, the back two can "modifier" buttons for items, and auto cast, The clicking of the sticks can be left and right click, X and A can be abilities/item 5 and 6, Y can be push to talk, B for the chat wheel. I think you are a few buttons short, but you could likely play decently with it.

Can i just buy one now?

Console kids why would you want to emulate mouse precision with a stick?

Nope, not yet. I wonder how much it will be. My gut says $100, but Valve is likely willing to sell them for like 10% over cost, which may bring them down to like $50.

Behold......THE OWL!!!

Fuck you it's the boombox. IT BLASTS BEATS WHILE YOU BLAST FOOLS.

Seriously though, not sure how they're gonna deal with the lack of a d-pad. I could understand if those trackpads were essentially alternative sticks, but as it is I'm not really seeing how I could transition to this controller completely given it's lack of a key component of traditional controllers.

I could see myself picking one up if reviews are really good, but I'll definitely want to keep a DS4 or Xbone controller around as well regardless.

Is anyone actually reading the link before posting or just looking at the picture?

Just curious because it doesn't seem so.

Anyway colour me curious. If it is really much closer to K&M precision than sticks I'm in. Looks pretty well thought out to me including the buttons but it seems everyone is trying to compare it to current gamepads without reading the detail to understand what's actually behind the design.

I respect them for trying something different, not sure how it will play out, but I'd like to try it. I wonder if they've tried it on DOTA 2 yet...

Seriously like I am all for trying dual trackpads but the button placement just seems bizarre. Like in the example Portal 2 controls they give, you wouldn't be able to move and push to talk at the same time, which seems pretty vital.

look at the back. they want you to be able to access most things without moving your thumbs off the dealios.

umm... well, all that matters is how well it works, right? I guess we'll see. Good on them for trying something new. I'm curious how much it'll cost though, with a touchscreen and everything.

The first of the three announcements to really excite me so far. SteamOS was predictable, but I wasn't expecting a controller that looks like it's half speaker lol.

This is definitely the most innovative controller of the coming generation.

Awww

People always trying to fix what ain't broke

But we already have new controllers from Sony/MS that will likely work and be supported

I can see why they might try something wildly different

I mean whats the point of just cloning existing controllers anyways?

Given that we can plug PS4/Xbone controllers into a PC for a traditional dualstick feel I'm glad Valve is trying something different. Curious if will allow for a comfortable RTS experience (I like the Civ V screen), but super skeptical that I'd want to play DOTA on one.

So much is about feel and responsiveness so I'm holding back judgement until I play a game with one.

This screams innovation for innovation's sake to me, and not actually solving a problem with the current joystick based controllers we have (or are about to have). I'm willing to give it a try to see how it works in the field, but I am not exactly optimistic.

The fuck were they thinking? People hates touch screen for gaming so they went ahead and make 2 track pads...

Well the problem with touch screens gaming on phones is that the controls obscure the field of view and there is no feedback, both for when your fingers leave the designated control area and for when you press a button. The first problem doesn't apply here and they claim they have a feedback mechanism that will work.

Still, I already can't play 2D games with a control stick, this looks even worse.

Lol at the last part. Just teasing the whole internet again.

Not sure what to think it looks really strange, I'll give it a go but I can't see this being better than the 360 controller.

It just looks like they're trying to be different for the sake of it.

I'm really curious about this haptic feedback.. That seems to be what will make or break this product. I've never played with a haptic surface before. I also wonder how the trackpads will be for games like pacman. This thing looks insane. But I'm most excited to have a deeply integrated controller with steam. Now finally you won't have the steam window active to pop up big picture mode.
