Dual Shock 4 lightbar can't be turned off

Just wait for 4.1 which will I'm sure be manufactured right after launch.

Otherwise I'll just be staring at the ceiling from that ultra bright tiny light that seems to light up my entire bedroom all night long, losing sleep and starting to see shit.

A retarded design decision, hopefully the 800% more sensitive japanese will have an issue with that and it'll be altered for japan launch.
Else I'll open and mod the controller myself, a small resistor and 15 minutes should do.

I also would like the option to turn it off. Is that being debated? Are there people who don't even want the option available?

Has anyone started any kind of social media mass-message campaign to let Sony know how we feel? I think this would be an easy one for them to do to appease fans. Not like we're asking for a lot here.

I mean... It's so easy I almost don't believe it's not already an option. (Or won't be an option come launch)

Who do we tweet? What's the tag? =)

And another 5 are people like you who are complaining about people complaining about people complaining.

...wait, did I add too many? :p

Ive contributed a lot to this threads discussion, unlike some of these other posters who just come in and complain about the thread :p

Well this is potential for a third party to make an accessory that covers the light bar

With all the indie games on PS4, I hope someone makes Battling Seizure Robots where the gamepad joins your TV in assaulting your senses. Turn it off? Why would you want to!

I think Sony just really, REALLY, wants to push that camera. They can start by cutting the price a little more. Make it half off when you buy any Sony First Party game. Something.

If only there were a sort of online discussion in which dissatisfaction with this decision could be voiced and perhaps even acknowledged by those behind the product. If only such a place existed.

Or you know Sony could give us the option of turning it off? Putting tape on pricey electronics is extremely ghetto.

It is so crazy that people defend this. It is not something that needs defending! It's not like its Xbox fans coming in here and complaining and bad mouthing the system, the people that want this option are going to BUY a PS4 and want to enjoy their system without a glaring colored light on the screen.

Look at the new Killzone TGS thread and you can see a great picture with a nice green reflection in it. That is going to be so nice to have on the screen all the time.

The solution would be to cover the light bar as it's become pretty obvious it's a core design feature of the DS4 and was intended to be used alongside the EYE, which Sony decided to make optional at possibly the last minute?

Whatever the reason, there's a cheap and easy way to cover the lightbar, so I really don't understand the issue. Covering it with electrical tape won't compromise or damage the controller in anyway, so I really don't understand why some people are being so stubborn about having to do it.

Hey Sony you want to know how to design a controller? Take a look at the PS1 and PS2 dual shocks.

No dumb trigger buttons, no gimmicks like bright lightbar and share buttons, just simple and clean the way it was meant to be.

If it does not affect the battery much and I can change the color to whatever I want the default to be, I won't have too much a problem with it, but they should really try to add option to turn it off with an update at some point.

Don't listen to this lunatic Sony, the DS4 seems to be an improvement in every way over your previous terrible controllers. Just let me turn off the light and we're all good.

You really don't understand why someone wouldn't want to put duct tape on their nice new electronics for something that could easily have a non/off switch on the software side?

You really don't get that? Yes that solves the problem, and I will be doing it, but no one wants to put duct tape all over their new electronics, come on man.

My 24" hp monitor has a glossy screen. Do I buy a .50 roll of electrician tape or a $450 Asus 27" 3d monitor in matte?

Decisions, decisions.

I have this little frosted glass lamp on, at the very least, when using my television or computer. Watching a bright screen in the darkness, that isn't in a movie theatre, gives me headaches.

Anyway, I'd imagine this would largely be a non-issue for people who sit far away from their screens and don't hold the DS4 up.

I honestly do not. It doesn't compromise the controller in any way and it can be easily removed if/when Sony decide to allow the light to be disabled. And let's not exaggerate, it's not all over their new electronics, it's a small strip across the top of a controller.

It's a non factor, it's not like you're having to wrap the entire thing in gaudy looking tape...It's one small strip of black tape across the top of the controller that nicely matches the colour of the controller and you'll never see or feel during use.

That's because Resogun is a relatively bright game with busy visuals (particle effects up the wazoo).

It's going to be very noticeable on some games and less on others.

Yup. In really bright scenes the dual shock 4's light is not going to be a problem. Unfortunately many games have darker scenes as well, and that is when it's gonna be a big problem. Then you have entire games that are mostly darker in nature, such as The Last of Us.

What an epic fail. Who designs a controller to glow on your screen? This is terrible. It is going to annoy the hell out of me.

Did you really dig this up to say that? You could have at least posted the new article from SuperGiant Games where they talk about how they use the Lightbar.

Let me tell you about one unexpected example from recent months, involving a little trick we decided to try on a whim with the DualShock 4, when we first got our hands on it.
So we started trying different things. We iterated on the introductory moments a bunch of times, until we felt like we had a scene that set up the relationship between these characters as clearly and succinctly as possible. We also developed a cool bit of tech that makes the Transistor flash in sync with the voiceover coming from it.
This flashing effect not only helps our main character stand out amid the colorful futuristic scenery, but because of it you instantly infer that the voice you’re hearing must be coming from that weird computer sword Red’s carrying around. We finally felt like we’d solved the who’s-talking problem. Then we started playing with the PS4 controller, and we had another idea.
See, among its many features, the DualShock 4 has this light bar on it, which can be programmed to display just about any color. When Sony revealed the controller, they suggested this light bar could have a variety of uses, such as visually distinguishing between four players in a cooperative game and stuff like that. Sony didn’t suggest it could be used to indicate when an extraordinary weapon of unknown origin was speaking to you. We soon found, however, that the light bar works really well for that. We got it to match the exact turquoise hue of the in-game weapon, and the flashing effect was in perfect sync. When I played with this for the first time, it felt a little more like the Transistor was right there in my own hands.
Nevertheless, it’s a subtle enough feature so we didn’t really play it up. We don’t like talking about our games in terms of specific features anyway, plus we wanted to see if anyone would even notice. And sure enough, when we showed Transistor at PAX Prime recently, dozens of people who played it mentioned to us that they caught that little detail, and how cool they thought it was.
Our use of the light bar took nothing more than a quick conversation and maybe a couple of hours of engineering time. But to me it’s a microcosm of our development process. If we can pull together little touches like this spontaneously and often, then Transistor will be filled with them. And I feel strongly that the small stuff in games — those fun and interesting little details you notice in your favorites — are just as important as the big stuff. It’s what gives the best games their distinctive character and personality, and it’s the stuff you end up remembering long after you’ve finished playing.

This may have been answered already, but can any (tech) gafers say if adding an off option is something that can be patched via a download/update?

If so, I can definitely see Sony doing this at some point when/if they receive enough (negative) feedback about it.

Don't think it takes a techie to know if you can send an off signal to a controller lightbar... But, I know those questions, just covering all the bases you are.

In what way is 11 days "necro"?
