Ubisoft won't support Wii U version of AC: Black Flag with DLC

I don't buy DLC for these kinds of games, so with lower price point (when it bombed and get discounted) this is actually the definitive version for me.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg. If Ubisoft is disappointed in Wii U game sales, then poor support might be a part of the blame.

they've published or are publishing at least 15 retail Wii U games including exclusive Zombi U.

Nintendo have published or are publishing somewhere between 20-25 retail games.

Ubisoft have done a lot for Wii U.

Maybe, we will have to wait and see if this version comes with technical issues due to a lazy port.

It's a shame. If I recall correctly, Assassins' Creed 3 was one of the few multiplatform Wii U games to get DLC parity with the other consoles. I wonder how well that did...

About that. For weeks it was not known if AC3 on the Wii U would get DLC. Ubisoft would never give an answer in either direction I believe. Then it suddenly appeared without any notice weeks after it first appeared on the other systems. There was no season pass so in order to get the King Washington DLC you had to spend full price. $30 to get it. That's the cost of the season pass for all of the dlc (single player and mutliplayer) on the other platforms. Almost the cost of a brand new game. The multiplayer DLC was a waste as well because the match making really didn't work. It would work sometimes and not at others. Lobbies would not be filled. According to reports it's only been working well in the last few weeks for some reason. The DLC also has never been discounted. So it's a combination of people not knowing it existed and those that did likely not biting due to the price compared to other versions.

So if this is based on AC3 DLC not selling that's on Ubisoft in how they handled it.

Personally I had to make a choice at that point and I choose to spend the money on another game instead due to the shortness of the dlc.

I think it's stupid but I also think it's stupid Ubisoft already has their DLC plans laid out well before the game is out. I wouldn't buy it in any case.

Yaaaaaay. So glad the few third-party games we get on the Wii U get shafted like this. I assume Ubi just doesn't want the game to sell at all?

Well the game will sell just fine, though Wii U sales were never going to be the majority. Not even close.

Would the Wii U sales of the game even warrant the time and effort to put the DLC on the system? Maybe that's what they are waiting to see. If it doesn't sell well on Wii U due to the low Wii U console sales maybe it isn't worth it.

They're releasing a bunch of triple-A games on Wii U. That's more support than anyone else gives, really.

But for how much longer will they be supporting it with these sorts of games. Stuff like The Division and The crew aren't announced for Wii U. I expect they'll put games that are in line with the audience Nintendo is cultivating on the system like Rayman and Rabbids.

Even Valiant Hearts which seems like it would be a good fit for the Wii U going by artstyle and the engine it's running on doesn't have a Wii U version announced.

Who cares? Who buys multi-plats on a Nintendo console? A Nintendo console is like a second console that you get to play Nintendo shit. The whole discussion on multi-plat devs not supporting Wii U is much ado about nothing imo.

This is kind of how I feel.

Who has time for UbiSoft games this fall when they usually are unpolished messes at launch, need multiple patches, and pricedrop two weeks later. I'd be pretty surprised if anyone here is actively planning to buy AC4 or Watch Dogs on Day 1 after we've seen what has happened with UbiSoft launches the last two years.

Rayman Legends is fuckin' great though.

That sucks but let's be rational here people can you blame them? They've been the best supporter of the Wii U, delay of Rayman notwithstanding and they haven't really seen any return from it. It totally makes sense for them to do this.

I don't think you realize how much it would cost Ubisoft to optimize games like The Division and The Crew for Wii U. It's simply not worth the money. And for that record, I'm not even sure if the Wii U has the internet infrastructure necessary for such online-intergrated games.

Nintendo needs third party licensing fees. It's a total fallacy that they can truck right along with zero support.

You clearly haven't seen the sales of the AC series. It will sell a ton in it's first month NPD, most of those will be at full price.

If they released them I would buy them. But since they only get a small fraction and Nintendo games are just a small percentage of the games aviable. I'm not paying 300€ to get the 8% of the games out there. I rather buy any other home system that is not Ouya and have acess to the 87%. I really don't like having to spend money in multiple systems because Nintendo can get their third party shit together, so I rather get my Nintendo fix on 3DS and play on any other system for my big screen experience.

Percentages are obviously made up, but I hope you get the idea.

What's with all the chicken dance from Ubisoft regarding the Wii U? They are undeniably the best third party supporter of the platform since the beginning but it doesn't seem like they are sure about what they are doing.

First they have an interesting exclusive launch game, then go multiplatform on the next exclusive and delay it, then keep announcing multiplatform ports, then release these titles with missing content, then tell everyone their next multiplatform game will look better on Wii U than on the HD twins and now again announce missing content for a multiplatform release.

Isn't one of their games (Watch_Dogs I thought) supposed to be better graphically than ps360 on Wii U? Hope that game doesn't meet the same fate.

OK so is it this:
The cost of porting the DLC (minus money made on DLC) is more than the lost sales of it when everyone realises it isnt a parity release? Also the loss of faith in ubisoft wiiu products going on (as few, but watchdogs etc, as there are going to be)

I only have space for one console, if it was a choice between only Nintendo games or only third party games then i'd be more than satisfied with only Nintendo games, if any third parties bother to release good multiplat games on my Nintendo system then I will happily buy some of them

Let's face it, even if it did get every single multiplatform game and all the DLC, it would still not sell. Xbox 360 and PS3 already have established hardware numbers and people are just going to get those versions. What's the sense in someone dropping an extra $360 for a Wii U console and version when there's not a substantial difference between the two in the eyes of consumers? You can't expect to win 1st place at a car show when you drive in after everyone's already put in their votes.

This. Both of those games are going to require a number of patches. There is no way they can't and don't see how anyone could possibly think that won't be the case after AC3. Waiting is usually best, especially since it looked like that patch wouldn't even come to the Wii U version for a while since there was no communication regarding it. Like the DLC the patches AC3 got on the Wii U just appeared. I don't think they even responded to questions. The most we got out of Ubisoft was in ZombiU when developers left messages but even then people had to almost if not beg for a patch to fix a game ending bug.

Everything's not positive when it comes to Ubisoft as some might think. I can understand them taking a wait and see approach and maybe holding off on DLC or not doing it if they don't think there will be a ROI. However they aren't doing their best to make sure their games sell. That Splinter Cell TV commercial that only showed the Xbox 360 at the end for example doesn't help things. Leaving the Wii U out of actual trailers and off the official website (which they did for AC3 leading up to it's launch) doesn't help things. Delaying a game in the middle of a drought until the Fall season when everyone will have plenty to pick from doesn't help things.

Well time to cancel that pre-order and wait for the price to drop like a rock by January. I really hope the same doesn't happen to Watch Dogs.

Isn't waiting for a price drop the best course of action for any game nowadays -- especially for something as homogenized as Assassin's Creed? I can't see any appeal to buying this game on the spot whether or not the Wii U version has DLC.

Silly Wii U owners, why don't you buy third party games? Why not buy these gimped/late/incomplete versions of multiplat games for a higher price (many Wii U ports are 10$/€ more expensive than the PS360 versions, God knows why)?

Not all consumers are stupid, treat like I am and you won't get my money. I admit that I wasn't planning on buying this game anyway but now I don't feel so bad about only getting Rayman when it hits the garbage bin (or used).

This sets a terrible precedent. It's basically how you guarantee future failure. If you teach an audience that you can't be trusted to support your games, or even release them in a timely fashion on a platform, then that audience will not buy your games on that platform. This is how you set in motion your inability to succeed on a platform and everybody does it on Nintendo's home consoles. It's like they don't want to succeed on Nintendo consoles so they set themselves up to fail.

DLC is not difficult to implement in a title. If you have it running on one console, and the engine already on another, it's not a monumental task for the rest.

Skipping it like this is not a good sign for Nintendo.

It's always so strange to me when people fret over not getting DLC.

Well sometimes the DLC is cool. I mean, mostly it's nothing to bother with, but things like Borderlands/2 DLC were solid add-ons. Plus it's a thing if one console doesn't get DLC while the rest do, even if the DLC sucked it'd still be a painful sting.

Bad news for potential sales I guess.

95% of the time I don´t give a shit about DLC or a Season Pass.

So I still think of buying it, but I will see how the version performs and looks.

My next gaming machine is on the horizon, but probably until 2014, so maybe I will get it for Wii U.

It's out of principle. If one system gets it, all should or it's not fair...or something like that.

I'm with you, most DLC stinks. The exceptions for me personally were Rock Band songs and New Super Luigi U.

I did buy the last 3 DLC for AC3 on Wii U to be honest it was a waste of my money

But but right now I feel supporting this company is a waste of my money you can join EA in my FU bag Ubisoft

What makes you think failure isn't already guaranteed? Ubisoft has access to preorder numbers and internal estimates. They aren't flying blind.

Guys it doesn't make sense for them from a financial standpoint and it's that simple.
They can't just create the DLC content and port it to the WiiU.
They need to pay developers, testers, project managers, etc. to do a port. And if they don't pay them enough then the DLC has all kinds of issues and then they end up having to burn money to do a patch because their fans are crying up a storm.
Like this they spare themselves the hassle, the financial risk, and what are the consequences? The 3 people that own that WiiU and were planning on getting this game now won't be able to buy this DLC.
