Oh my god, guys. I love 8.1,
And I HATED 8. I immediately went back to 7.
Not only does 8.1 preform better than 8, but I love for the fact you can now disable the charms bar, boot to desktop, universally search, and instead of going to metro when I click on the windows key, it just loads all of my programs and search. I am in love with 8.1. It's so much better than 8.

Now all I need is an official start menu back and I will be golden.
Oh and I did disable the annoying lock screen, so when I log off my account, I am back at the user page instead of the lock screen AND the user page.
Plus, automatic syncing with skydrive is awesome!
8.1 is sooooo gooood.
edit: Also I am buying a Surface Pro 2 around Christmas, or sooner. I am excited!

I have put up a link a few posts up to disable the log in screen also get Classic Shell then your good to go.

So upgrading went perfect.. however now the 'this pc' window shows libraries.. ugh.

And apparently my dvd drive is listed together with my harddrives.. owkay..

Anyone know how to make it look like it used to in 8?

I mean come on, that's annoying me a lot >.<

oh wow, setting your metro screen and your desktop wallpaper to exact same makes the transition when you click start waaaay less jarring.

You are a God. Functions so much better.

Also, I did lose Avast as well like an earlier poster. I could install the one for 8.1 but I think I'll just try and roll with 8.1 Defender for a while and try my luck. Anyone else notice an increase in free space after this update? And that was before deleting the previous windows.old through disk cleanup. That's mighty impressive and helpful to us SSD users..

Yup, gained about 16GB.

Is there a way for me to disable the lock screen but still need a password to log in so that I can skip the useless "swipe up" screen and go straight to entering my password?

Yeah same desktop and Start Screen background should be the default. It's so much better if you're using apps in the desktop a lot.

never left the stone age
More people having this error 0xC1900101 - 0x20017 ? I can't install it, every singletime. It baffles me that this isn't through windows update goddamn microsoft.

We all know why it's on the store. They're priming us to pay for the next big update.

I say this as someone who loves the shit out of Windows 8 btw.

It's makes the start screen feel much less oppressive. I picked the last background option for the start screen and now both transition through the same standard backgrounds (all of them).

Guarantee I'm going to screw up this post? Yeah.
weird, I upgraded to 8.1 and my free space on my small ass ssd went from 10gb to 47gb.

wonder if some old temp stuff got cleaned out.

I gained at most 3 GB going from 8 to 8.1, how the hell are people gaining so much space? Is it just temp files that were never deleted or something?

Does windows store still save any apps downloaded in a list with no way to get rid of them?

You can see all apps, apps installed and apps not installed. Under "Your Apps" in the store, if that's what you meant.

There's an option to clear.

Ugh, can't upgrade because my users folder is on my E: drive. Can't be arsed going through it all just for this upgrade.

So juba a windows 8.2 DVD lbs hawks I staple foo on my iMac. Can I use the DVD on my sony vaio laptop that is currently running windows 8? Will my product key work? The laptop came with windows 7, and I upgraded to windows 8 pro with media centre during that 15 dollars to update windows promo last year..

Edit: wow autoxorrext completely failed me there. *so I have a windows 8.1 DVD that I used to install on my iMac

Does anyone know? Not at home

I've been stuck on the phone with someone from MS support for almost an hour now. My Windows got deactivated during the 8.1 upgrade somehow and it's saying my key is blocked. Its a legit key I have an email receipt from MS for. They remoted in and screwed around with Windows update for an hour instead of, you know, unblocking my key. They fixed nothing and I'm still without an active install of Windows. They can't call me back until Tuesday.

What a shitshow.

I certaintly have learnt my lesson when it comes to installing preview versions of Windows OSes. Just upgraded to Windows 8.1 RTM/Final on the 17th, and now all of my programs, most drivers, and activations, as well as program data, are gone. I knew it would delete all programs, but MS could've left a list, like when you do a refresh.
Should've used CCleaner to make a program list... Well, you live and learn. I learnt my lesson this time.
8.1 RTM is just as amazing as the preview, despite this.

Since updating, I'm having this odd issue when I duplicate my displays, both are listed as 1080, yet within a window (such as Chrome or in the explorer) the resolution is blatantly lower. The desktop seems to be normal res however.

Any ideas?

Well, for what it's worth, everything has gone pretty smoothly for me. Even on my Mac where the Win 8 installation is entirely on an external SSD (no HD boot sector), which I was slightly worried would fall over. Work Surface went fine too.

I went from about 13.5GB free to 19.9GB free after deleting Windows.old. That's a pretty substantial improvement for my small SSD...

My internet connection seems to cut out for a second now sporadically, you also see the yellow warning sign on the internet icon in the taskbar. Also tried updating to no avail ... Annoying =/

Upgrade went fine.

But now one of my monitors has no driver and is in huge 640 x 480 mode and I can't fix it.

Why would my second monitor work fine but my primary not?

Any help would be great.

Its an Acer G235H

It's not a driver issue, I had the same. It just messes up the desktop size option.

Right click on desktop -> Make text and other items larger or smaller -> Tick "Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays" and set it to Smaller ( or whatever you prefer ). Worked for me however I had to do it 2-3 times after some restarts, some weird bug.

Didn't work.

Its listed as "Generic Non-PnP Monitor" under Displays.

Where as my other monitor that's working fine is identified as "Acer G235H"

Upgrade went fine but now I can't connect to a shared computer.

I have a Mac Mini running SMB sharing, and in windows 8 I could access it by typing \\MacMini into my explorer.. now it gives errors saying it can't find it and can't connect.

Anyone have any knowledge into a quick fix?

finally installed that goddamn steelseries. Also updated Classic Shell because well microsoft still doesn't listen to it's consumers what a start menu is like.
no company should ever listen to consumers in that way. people are idiots. My company once 'listened to users' when rolling out some internal software. It was a 7 year mistake and we still can't get rid of or update that shit.

the start button now, with synced wallpapers as default is what they should have done from the get go. it's pretty good now.

I still need my task bar to show open metro apps as well though.

is network/file sharing turned on? when you click on 'network' in windows explorer do you get a warning or prompt at the top of the window?

Hey everyone, Mac user here but my father uses a Windows 8 laptop, and now with 8.1 updated this morning. He is having some problems getting internet access without first opening up Word. Otherwise, he gets the error that Chrome or IE can't access the internet. Wtf?

He told me that he has forever been having to first open Word before he can gain network access to the Internet. He's been using IE but I installed Chrome on his browser this morning. Still, if he turns on his computer from shut-down and tries to log into Chrome, it tells him that the computer isn't giving Chrome internet access.

I tried going to his firewall settings and allowing Chrome, but still no luck. I'm sure this is a really old issue with Windows 8 and now 8.1 specific, but if anyone can help will bypassing opening up Word (however that works), so that Chrome instantly fires up -- that would be MUCH appreciated!

Thank you!

I had a similar problem after messing around with my wifi card way too much (creating virtual access points on a shitty D-Link wifi card). My wireless wouldn't reconnect on it's own after boot/resume.

I managed to fix it by going into the Device Manager, removing the wireless adapter and then doing the "scan for hardware changes" thing, so it re-detected it and re-installed it anew. Apparently it fixed whatever settings I managed to bork.

After installing 8.1 I noticed that new apps don't automatically appear on the start menu, I have to go to all programs and add them. Is this a setting I can change? I like them to appear there.

Meh, Windows 8.1 wasn't running games using the Source engine very well on my computer and my computer was always disconnecting from the Internet.

I'm back on 8.0 and I miss the start button, the app view screen that hides Metro, universal search and boot to desktop. Is there any way I can simulate the 8.1 experience on 8.0?

So I got my update to work, I clicked download on the store, and the circles kept going round and round, I continued to do my stuff in desktop mode. Randomly I got a prompt that my computer will restart multiple times during the installation of windows 8.1 and tah-dah it worked!
