PS4 Brazil Importation costs revealed. Taxes say Olá!! ($1161.53 USD in taxes!)

You're linking me to a blog post that on turn is referencing facebook comments and an article where they claim their unnammed source "confirms" that the x1 is imported. (I'm Portuguese)

Sorry, I don't buy it. This is in NO WAY beneficial for Sony for them to be doing it on their own.
Everybody knows here that Xbox One is imported too... you can believe or not... it is official... I just don't like some guys here trying to say it is manufactured because it is not.

I feel bad for Brazilian brothers :(

but at least prices reflect VALUE and POWER correctly there !

X1 @2200 = PS4 @ 4000

More news on the subject. It's what I was teasing everyone about in the last thread.

Discussion on this subject without the information that will be revealed on that day is practically moot, to be honest.
I hope that this news actually helps with the struggle against abusive taxes.

While I share the sentiment, I really don't blame anyone who just watches from the sides, it's just a videogame console, a luxury good, and I'm sure there are far bigger pressing issues for the majority of brazilians.

Do you have an extra ticket for Friday?
I hated BGS so much last year that I didn't really noticed that I'm on vacation on Friday this time =/

You'd actually need press credentials to get in there during the first day, haha. :(

I will never ever complain about taxes. Poor brazilians.
What about digital goods? Do they get taxed too?

It's kind of a mess. Steam prices are usually cheaper here in Brazil than in the US, but then again PC games usually are because they're labeled as "software" instead of as "gambling related stuff" like console games. Don't ask me why, but it's the reason why we get cases like FIFA 14, which costs R$ 69 on PC and R$ 199 on PS3/X360.

Meanwhile, games on the Brazilian PSN or eShop vary in price. Some companies like to match the retail prices we get here, while others simply convert the prices directly from dollar to real.

What time will be the Sony conference? Are there some streaming or liveblog?

I don't have the schedule on me right now, but if I'm not mistaken it'll be around noon. I don't think Sony will be streaming anything, and UOL Jogos won't be live-blogging it because, to be honest, we didn't feel the need to. We'll be there, though.

The main attraction should be the Brazilian PS Plus pricing announcement.

I'm not blaming anyone, mantidor. As a matter of fact, I am one of those people that "just watches from the sides" (regarding the tax problem).

And don't take this the wrong way, but the "there are worse things to worry about" is a terrible argument, in any rational discussion. It's obvious that there are bigger pressing issues, and I have experienced some of them first hand. But this should not stop us from trying to resolve other issues, right? Otherwise, we would never solve any issue, at all.

I'm pretty sure you'll get what you want.

Haha, thanks! This gives me hope.

we're checking the tax info released by Sony, and the calculations don't match.

They are charging for the final American console retail price, even if it's made in China and it's being shipped directly to us in Brazil. There's another tax in 'double' there, the profit retail margin is huge as well.

They have released the psvita here as well, and these calculations for the ps4 doesn't match if applied to the final retail price of psvita.

Long story short, Microsoft is 100USD more expensive and it's almost half of the price of PS4 here in Brazil. So there are no excuses.

But but I was told in the 1st thread that it wasn't the governments fault!

Anyone that lives or lived in Brazil with half a wit knows it is NOT ONLY the governments fault.

There are loads of posts in this thread that shows how Sony is being dodgy with the numbers they show.

And NO OTHER IMPORTED GOOD in Brazil, including other gaming consoles, has ever seen a price increase this big because of taxes ALONE.

This thread has too many people that have never been to or read anything about Brazil before giving their opinion after only reading the title.

Did you not read the thread? Taxes are huge, but Microsoft pulled it off probably because it isn't bringing the Xbone at US retail price leaving the profit only to MS BR. Sony is importing using the US retail price which means Sony EUA AND Sony Brazil are making profit over the PS4. And that makes the taxes be more than what they should be.

Ohhhh good to hear... I was expecting that because PS4 can't be played without Plus... the only issue for me is that I have all my gaming data on US account because when I created my account the BR Store didn't exist and now there is no Plus.

If there are any way to change the region of my PSN account I will love it now that the BR Store and Plus exists.

Slightly off topic but it was the first thing that came to mind, not trying to be nitpicky but given the situation there (i heard in the news a 5 year old was shot in the head while his parents were being mugged, just because he was crying) it boggles my mind about how narrow minded can people get.

One should think people would be rioting on the streets or asking their representatives to address all those issues, not just the ps4 price point.

I'm not trying to derail the point, the price of the console (justified or not) is absolutely excessive and says a lot about the country policies regarding poverty, i mean, i wouldn't even want to know what is like to be poor in Brazil, also the extreme violence... and at the end of the day seems like World Cups and Olympics are the main issues.

I participated more in the first topic regarding the price (Posted by Brazil i think), and saw a lot of brazilians blaming Sony about the price, at the end, Sony being the culprit or not, you guys should have a government who shields you from all kinds of abuses (local and foreign), not just the console based ones.

Brazil, just to guarantee I won't miss it, are you going to share the "good news" here on Gaf?

Off topic: We are rioting, and, supposedly, it will get even more intense during the World Cup, when all of the midia will be focusing on the country.

It's probably because volumes are so restricted atm.

On other products Sony probably have the internal price set lower and then make it up with distributor margin then pay a higher level of local corporate tax by booking the profits locally. Or they manufacture stuff locally, I know they make Vaio laptops and Xperia phones in the country. The Xperia ZQ, for example, was a specially locally manufactured SKU of the ZL.

Sony won't sell at a loss though, basically with the PS4 it looks like Sony want the income/revenue to be booked in Japan rather than in Brazil, my guess is that they need to show a decent level of profitability to ensure there are no more tax asset writedowns on Japanese DTAs.

Exactly, people here are behaving like the folks on Facebook, making no sense at all. There´s nothing wrong with Sony charts, they wouldn´t be crazy to release a document with mistakes to later on be corrected by the IRS or tax experts. Of course they put the max on everything, but it´s OK.

The only real variable here is the price they are initially declaring. Of course they don´t use MSRP for Vita and PS3, but they chose to do this for PS4 for logical reasons.

Everyone knows they are supply constrained. They know their die hard Brazilian fans like myself will get the PS4 some other way, so they will have like 5-10k units to sell it here.

If it´s guaranteed to sell out at 4.000, why make such a hassle to sell it for less? If they needed a compatitive price there´s no way in hell they would start at USD 390.

It´s the oldest trick in the book here, people are crazy to think that the local IRS has this crazy system to detect every little detail. Microsoft has probably declared the Xbone at USD 199 and this makes the whole thing more plausible. It´s not like the local IRS can audit them and prove that they can´t get the Xbone at 199 so they are lying.

People are flipping out over something that it´s not new. Hopefully this spotlight is a way to force the congress to pass the law that changes the way videogames are taxed, from gambling to computer software. (it´s stuck in the house since 2007).

You're being completely unrealistic. Videogames are a niche market, even on Brazil. You will never get nerds to gather on the streets and protest against the taxes. It needs to be a generalized campaign... that involves every other type of abuse that's common around here... like Car prices, TV prices, etc.

Them, maybe, you can get an angry mob on the streets.

Well said. Much better than complaining about our country's problems is doing something about it. The underdog complex some brazilians have is pathetic. It's getting to a point where the rest of the world sees more worth in Brazil than its own people.

But clearly not in Brazil, the US retail price includes the costs of distribution and retail in the US. On top of that Sony Brazil is adding Brazilian distribution and retail costs. These two together compound for more taxes and so on....

And also want to know how is the pricing of the WiiU if is officially launched there, here in Mexico pricing is weird too, but MS and Sony both get more descent pricing that Nintendo but not as high as Sony is getting the PS4 there that's almost 3 times the price of US launch there.

Retail margins for consoles in the US are essentially zero.

I can't trust this math. Just compare the MSRP of officially available consoles in Brazil.

I checked the US prices at Amazon/GameStop and Brazil at Saraiva/Submarino

Edit: And now it is confirmed that Xbox One is indeed manufactured in Brazil, that makes the price more believable, but stills a hell of expensive..

You should add that when the PS3 wasn't manufactured in Brazil it was imported by Sony and had a retail price R$ 1400, as soon as it began local manufacturing Sony decreased to R$ 1100

WiiU isn't officially released in Brazil yet. You can get the basic model in gray market for around 400USD

You guys are missing zmgwtfbbq´s posts by your own choice. He knows stuff. It´s all about how much they say the console costs initially. That´s why the prices fluctuate so much.

It´s not rocket science.

The Brazilian retail price is 490... they have a distributor profit... that they take off at the end as a "discount", the retail mark up is literally over 200 USD. That money doesn't go to Sony.

That's great, if there's no "catch" on that deal, haha! Also, people who have an US account, do they need to create another one on brazilian PSN? Or Sony will allow some kind of account "migration"?

Unlikely, the "catch" is that you probably already had a US PSN and you wont be able to transfers games or trophies that you bought/earned.

That's not a huge difference, I will most likely keep my US account regardless of the price of the PS Plus here. Anything else we should be expecting for Thursday? that was kinda disappointing.
