CBOAT: ESRAM handicap for now, but will get better

See, CBOAT isn't all doom & gloom.

And 720-900p will be the norm for launch, right? Not the for the life of the XBO?

The reason the resolution is lower is that frame buffers just straight up more space at higher resolution, and when you only have 32 MB, you have to make sacrifices if you want to load more stuff into the eSRAM.

I hope at least 900p is the norm. Hopefully there won't be too much lost in upscaling to 1080p.

It probably will be. I'm guessing he mentioned 720p since not all games will be 1080p on PS4 either. I could see 1080/900 and 900/720 becoming common.

So the Xbox One still has a chance?

Wealthy had a meltdown xD

That's good to hear, hopefully Microsoft will invest more money in first-party development to bring about it's potential.

Sucks that MS thought giving less power to developers and making it harder to take advantage off, was a good idea.

MS thought reasonable power relative to their nearest competitor plus a cheap BOM and guaranteed 8 GB RAM was profitable with a high value prop. They just got outsmarted by Sony who took a risk with the 8 GB GDDR5 RAM, simpler more developer friendly system architecture, and better GPU.

He said this in the NBA thread? "games will be normally 720-900p" in a thread where 1080p has been "confirmed" for the One.

If sports games can't hit 1080p on a next-gen console, it may as well kill itself.

It is one of the few genres where no one is concerned about graphical compromise.

I wonder how GAF is going to react when we see the first 900p game in the PS4's lifetime? Yes, it's a machine primed for 1080p, but don't game resolutions tend to drop over a console's lifetime as devs try to push visuals to their peak?

Just wanna throw that out there so people are prepared for the inevitable day. 1080 will always be the norm, tho.

We might see that with BF4.

I'm ok with that tradeoff in the future when the consoles are being pushed to their limits, but right now I wouldn't be content with 900p

what was Quantic Dream's tech demo resolution?

Because if they can pull that much off in real time at 1080p....I can only imagine how ridiculous there games would look at 900p in terms of detail, sure it wouldn't be as clear native wise but damn there would be so much to take in.

Fast forward to 2016

X-Box One Point Five - Now with all those things you were expecting
-No Disc Drive
-One Thousand and Eighty Pees
-That clock that you were asking for because the front of the black box was wasted space
-Limited X-Box One backwards compatibility, because you only play those games that come out once a year anyway

I mean it doesn't really contradict what he said. If i remember correctly some of the only 1080p games last gen were basketball games. They're fairly small scale compared to most games.

This is so true. LOL N4g is better this gen then last because I feel like it's a meta game in its self to watch GAF make headlines left and right.

So 90% of PS4 games will run at 1080p native whereas 90% of Xbox One games will be at 720/900p native the whole gen? Including third party games?

That's huge... I never thought it would be possible, there will be huge differences between the same game running at 1080p on one hand, and at 720p on the other and.

No one

will care. It is the fact that several multiplats on the Xbone are rumored to be struggling to hit 1080p - not that one (1) game couldn't hit it. Like you said, people want 1080p to be the norm, not the exception.

Sub 1080p will certainly happen on PS4. You can take that to the bank.

Personally I find it hard to believe those percentages will be right. More like 70/20 would be my guess out of my ass.

Battlefield will probably be that at launch.

I really don't think everybody is expecting everything to be 1080p. If they are, they're going to be disappointed. There'll be 900p games. There'll be 720p games on the PS4 too, depending on what other priorities the developer may have. But I'm personally expecting 900-1080p to be the norm on the PS4.

Given the exact same game, with the same visual fidelity, people should always prefer the higher resolution though.
And the PS4 having more hardware grunt will hopefully mean developers can realise their vision without having to sacrifice resolution and framerate as often or as much.

And something like COD Ghosts ending up being 720p, if that is the case, is somewhat shocking though considering how poor it looks next to other next gen games.

3rd console curse, dude
They can't help it.

And that got me thinking yesterday about Sony's kerfuffle circa 2006. If Sony can recover from "$599" and "Giant Enemy Crabs" and get to where they are now, then I'd imagine MS could do something similar. I'm not saying that's what's going to happen but, you know, anything's possible. Naïve hope and what not.

Maybe now whiny fanboys will shut up about cboat only saying negative things about the xbone.

See, CBOAT isn't all doom & gloom.

And 720-900p will be the norm for launch, right? Not the for the life of the XBO?

Well I don't see why it would improve as games get more visually complex. PS4 games will probably drop below 1080p down the line as well.

It was a pain seeing the PS3 struggles early in its lifetime. I suspect X1 will be the same way.

Except PS3's hardware advantages (dat Cell power) were eventually exploited to its advantage and to compensate for its weaknesses (the non-unified memory pools and the seeker GPU.)

Conversely, CBOAT is saying the XBone's gimped hardware will ALWAYS be behind the PS4.

So yeah, development will get better/easier on XBone, but it will never make up for the obvious deficit in raw power.

For life.

It seems that he means that you can't change hardware, and it will be 720-900 the whole gen.

Life.

With 32MB of ESRAM, DDR3, 16ROPS and 1.18TFLOPS....

Fffffffuuuuuuuuuuu. That is insane! You'd think that by the time second and third gen games arrive, devs will have figured out how to work at least 1080p 30fps on every XBO game.
