Popped it into the 360 to make sure it worked well enough, messed around in the garage area a little.

I'll probably livestream a blind playthrough over the weekend.

Nice. I hear the 360 isn't the best way to play it, but acceptable. I still have an oXbox, and that game is one very big reason why. (It's also why I eventually bought one.)

I have the two pack version, but hey.

Link me to your YouTube channel, and give it a fair detailed review like you did with the first game.

Do a trick video too! Please

This is one great game. No lies about that. And the sountrack is just BRILLIANTLY amazing. Definitely recommend this game to anyone who's interested in this style of game. One of a kind!

Long live Sega and the Dreamcast!

I seriously need to stop putting off acquiring the recent re-release of this game already. That gif of the Jam chase is too fucking good.

Nice write up, loved reading about someone experiencing a favorite game for the first time. It's sure brought back good memories.

Can't wait to hear your thoughts on JSRF. I'd totally watch a livestream of you playing through it for the first time.

The JSRF bullet-time feature that's only available while playing the disc on 360 is pretty sweet. Make good use of it!
Practically made that rollercoaster area a cakewalk!

I'm not sure what to blame all of these glitches on, but some of them are pretty funny.

That happens on the OG Xbox as well so I think it was on purpose. I don't get it either.

The level design is really spectacular. As you mentioned, there's actually a lot of care placed into the layouts of the levels and it's something that gets "missed" by a lot of people who criticize the game. Clever level design, in general, seems to be something that's under-appreciated, often ignored in favor of super scripted set piece bullshit.

You may not be moist but I am.

Totally agree

My favorite activity on GAF is waiting for Teknopathetic to come talk about JSRF in detail in any thread that involves it.

Oh awesome, I loved watching the first part. Are you planing on doing a write up after you've finished the game? I'm really interested in how you think both games compare to one another.

If JSRF HD ever comes out, we can finally settle that it is the superior game and that it has, in fact, aged very well.

JSRF is complete shit at giving the player feedback for some crucial things, has sloppier level design and has a bogus, tedious last third. Its probably the best 3D Sonic game sega has ever put out (and i say that as a good thing) but it in no way tops the original which i feel is elegant design all the way through.

Yeah, I like Future. But better than the original? Nah. I do like it a lot though. I used to hate it because it wasn't like the first one, but I've grown to appreciate it for what it is rather than hate it for what it's not.

I have to agree with this. I've played JSRF so much that I know it like the back of my hand, but when I watch people play it for the first time like Sixfortyfive I can see that there are parts of the game where it doesn't really give you any indication of what you're supposed to do or how you're supposed to do things.

I dunno. I kind of felt that the first half was the most tedious part. You could probably cut it from the game entirely and little of value would be lost... I came really close to throwing in the towel right before the 5 hour mark, which fortunately coincided exactly with the skyscraper area and thus the first time the game actually started demanding competency at the platforming/exploration it purportedly focuses on. Started to feel like an actual game at that point.

I'm actually knocking out some post-game stuff as I type this. The street challenges are actually moderately interesting enough to keep me going for now; it's just further confusing me as to why they couldn't incorporate some of these skill-based tasks into requirements for the main game. The earlier levels in the game wouldn't have felt so empty and padded if they were more than just hunting down and checking off graffiti points over and over again.

I am duty-bound to educate the masses on just how trash JSRF is. I watched Sixfortyfive stream and I was getting upset just watching him deal with the shittiness of the game. I was having flashbacks to playing this garbage shortly after I picked up my Xbox (as it was the sole reason, at that time, that I got one) and reliving the palpable buyer's remorse I had during my entire playthrough. Sixfortyfive paid a fraction of what I did for JSRF and I felt buyer's remorse *for him*.

If I had bought a whole console for this and gone in with absolutely no expectations (or, rather, the expectations of a JSR2), I'd have probably just written the whole thing off as watered-down slop for tasteless simpletons and just stormed out of this thread already.

I think the game does have its merits (more on that to come), but it's inconsistent and being the designated follow-up to JSR really does it no favors.

It was unfortunate, but at least we got another Naganuma soundtrack out of the thing so it wasn't a total bust.

Maaaan

I don't agree with any of the 'JSRF is bad' comments. Yeah it had a few weird ass glitches, but I'd easily consider it the superior JSR title over the original. Granted, they're both completely different games with different ways to play. Future's more design oriented to go from point A to B in regards to the graffiti markers (they literally go into a line that really involves one or two laps around the map) compared to JSR.

What did you think of the soundtrack of JSRF at the time you played it?

"What did you think of the soundtrack of JSRF at the time you played it?"

Mildly disappointed, the Naganuma stuff is good, some of the licensed songs are okay. Birthday Cake is AWESOME. Aisle 10 is fingernails on chalkboard awful. If JSRF wasn't already awful, if JSRF was a solid game by itself, Aisle 10 alone would've ruined it.

I don't hate the JSRF Soundtrack, I hate Aisle 10. I forgot to mention the Guitar Vader songs in JSRF were good as well.

But fuck Aisle 10.

And SFxT is the best Capcom fighting game of the generation.

Hello Allison~
I wanna hold your hand~
I haven't been the same man since I saw you coming in~

First played JSRF on my friend's Xbox years ago, and I absolutely adored it. Finally got to play JSR HD last fall, and realised I'd been missing out on the true genius of the series. Prefer JSR to Future now, but I still want an HD port of Future. Soundtrack for both have been on my listening rotation for years as well.

That song is amazing. You have mostly good taste, but I disagree on this entirely.

It gives me all kinds of feels ;)

is it really sad that I have that twitchy "Give me the controller feeling" watching you play Shibuya?

As much as I love me some JSR, I still have no idea why the tutorial is so much harder than 80% of the rest of the game. You already got a weird off-beat game with unique mechanics to try and appeal to people, then you throw that at them.

Great points, great OP. Absolutely love this game for all the reasons that are usually pointed out.

It may have "aged poorly" but that's only because too much is overly simplified these days.
