DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

This need to be added to the OP. seriously and in top of that higher FPS on PS4!!

WTF is wrong with DF captures on PS3 and now PS4. Their videos are way different from what I would see the game running on my TV and PS3. Also how come XB1 > PC ... that is lol. Must be something wrong with the capture.

I hope they would have made PS4 1080p. Oh well it still looks good.

Despite the crushing blacks and higher contrast, Xbox One manages to somehow lose the shadows....

jft6VxomFMo6L.png

While those are technically shadows, that's ambient occlusion that's missing from the XO version. The DF article covers this omission.

Nice catch. Also even the guys uniform lacks the level of detail on the XO.

They utilize some randomness to the camo patterns seen in game to add variety to characters. It's not that the XO version lacks detail, it's that the player is wearing a different type of camo in each playthrough. Again, the DF article covers this.

Why do all of the XO screenshots look like a post-processed digital camera image after noise reduction or something. It legitimately looks better sometimes but in most cases it just looks like a fake sharp jaggy mess.

After several pages of comparison it's obvious that the PS4 version is technically better. It's able to push a lot more by sheer power alone.

HOWEVER

The Xbox One has a lot of tricks up its sleeve to make the image look a lot better than it is. I have a feeling this is going to keep both systems looking a lot closer in the graphics department to the average gamer who doesn't crop images and analyze sharpening tools.

Honestly, the comparison so far makes me feel a little more at ease that we will have two competitive systems on the market. This is good news for gamers.

Alright here we go.

Here is the Jack upload vs. the DF upload screens

Top is the DF video, you can see the crushed blacks

Bottom is the Jack upload, same scene you can see the difference in the wheel black

DF did it on purpose from what I see

Wait, I don't get it, DF did this to make the Xbox One version looks better or worse?

DigitalFoundry got some splaining to do.

I think it's clear they crushed the blacks by having their Xbone on Expanded (might've looked good on whatever shit LCD they may have been playing on, but not on capture equipment), and Jacks probably didn't have that and also may have edited his footage, as a lot of youtubers do, like increasing the saturation and brightness. I could be wrong, someone ask Jack about that, but I know a lot of youtubers try to better the quality of their videos by color adjustment and such.

What I learned in this thread:

Crushed blacks apparently look good
Jaggies are terrible on Xbox One and tolerable on PS4
Framerate is noticeably better on PS4
Xbox One version looks like I turned the sharpness setting all the way up on my TV

Watched the first video. Other than resolution, the game looked nearly identical for the most part. But the XB1 was a jagged mess during the driving sections.

This video was pretty stupid without showing framerates though. They apparently didn't calibrate the colors for PS4 either.

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
X1. Most people have their sharpness turned up and the colors on there tv jacked too. Honestly.
Can you imagine what this is going to look like at TVs where sharpness is turned up?

I mean, the aliasing looks comically bad here as is due to sharpening, worse than most last gen games I've played lately: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0ycN0re_5A

Now imagine TV sharpening on TOP of that. Dice, whoever decided this was a good idea, just stahp.

Am I really reading that DF made the X1 version look better than it really does.

I'm done ....lol

After all of the stuff people have been spewing about the resolution difference making the PS4 WAY better we get this, and most people seem to be saying the X1 version looks better, or AT least on par with the PS4 version.

I'm at a loss for words...
I can see why some people prefer the XB1 version.
The contrast looks ugly IMO though. Gives it a toy-ish look and highlights the jaggies.

<looks at everything in the thread so far>

Yeah, casual buyers won't give a shit.

Pretty much. You could make an argument launch adopters aren't casual, but generally speaking all versions look so much better than current gen (have you even seen Battlefield 3 on 360? Holy fucking shit.) that they'll be happy, and should be.

Early launch game comparisons like this I think are only going to be valid because it's going to be more indicative of what things will be like 2-3 years from now. Any platform differences will (in theory) only get more pronounced as time goes on, and I think that momentum is what matters long term. Short term all the consoles both manufacturers can throw on shelves will sell out along with the games, so the specifics here are a moot point in that regard.

What is up with the contrast on the XBone version?

Beyond that, this just tells me that multiplatform launch titles will probably look pretty similar to each other which isn't really a surprise.

Rough generation ahead if they are single console owners and are buying mutiplats. Resolution, missing lighting, jaggies from Hades, crushed blacks (unless DF is actually fucking up and trying to hide xbox flaws in the darkness).

I imagine we shall be hearing the Nintendo Credo about how graphics don't matter more and more here.

The guff from Albert Penello and the Xbox Architects was that reducing resolution would allow for high quality pixels. e.g. running at 720p or 900p instead of 1080p would allow for much better AA, lighting and effects. But that isn't the case here at all. You have 720p, but then missing effects, variable frame rate and no AA. It's all compromise.

RoboPlato

I'd be in the dick
Looking at the framerate comparison video seems to show a few more differences not noted in the article. PS4 seems to have more motion blur and since it's post process AA, the coverage is better due to the higher resolution. The framerate disparity is also much larger than I expected. HBAO makes a big difference as well.

adamsapple

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

This is the most interesting and probably the most detailed shot I've seen so far.

At closer range, the objects, ground textures, rocks etc seem much more detailed on the XO, but the distant objects are very visibly jaggier and the PS4 version is smoother for distant objects.

Seems we cannot compare the next-gen console versions fairly with what we have just seen tonight. Some really weird and odd stuff going on. I'm not saying it is some sort of conspiracy in favor of either console. It's just weird. I guess we'll see how things turn out in the coming weeks as the real and final hardware/software get released.

I have full confidence the interwebs will get to the bottom of this.

Xbox Damage Control Team:
"We know how much influence you guys at DF have on the gaming community and we'd like to try and prevent a total failure of sales on the Xbox side.. how much money and what can be done to make it so our version doesn't look terrible?"

DF:
"Well we can darken the image and up the sharpness which will help mask a lot of the shortcomings however its going to risk us losing all credibility in the future...so It's going to cost you a lot"

XDCT:
"Do it, here's $xxx,xxx

Don't ban me please.

Complete and total bow to Thuway. I had heard 1080p and said as much... and I was wrong. He said 900p and was right. /bow

And holy shit at some of those gifs. I mean... if you buy either system as you play you'll be happy. But that flip back and forth... is almost generational. Madness.

Surface of Me

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
Its definitely good enough on both consoles. No worries there and no reason for anybody to fret over their choice. But for those who do want fewer jaggies and a better framerate we know which one to pick up.

Incredibly stupid some GAFers seem to think the X1 version is unplayable. You only read through this thread you might get the idea it looks like the 360 version. What's even more stupid is that the same people continue to passive aggressively insult X1 buyers by saying "lol have fun with your $500 720p machine", as if to imply a pixel difference in multiplatfrom games nullifies the exclusive games it has that might interest people. It's in every thread and I'm fucking tired of it.

well this isnt any different from those old 360/ps3 comparison videos where things would look different because of gamma and other video settings people didnt bother to tweak. expect better from DF though (yes even despite leadbetter)

I seriously want to know what's going on with this

But honestly why is the camouflage different between versions?

It seriously can't save that much processing power right?

It's frustrating that MS and/or Dice's trick to hide the massive flaws of the XB1 version is working on a lot of people here. It's pretty disingenuous of them to even try this stunt like no one would notice.

Frankly I'm disgusted at how many on here have been fooled by it already. Look at some of those pics, you can't even see the damn gun in the XB1 version.

This look like something DF did because Jackfrags footage does not look like anything like that .

no idea what to think here.... digital foundry video, looked better on xbone in my eyes.... animated gifs look better on the ps4 side. I've got my ps3/4 preorder, but wondering why all the fuss here period.... both next gen look good.

This is ridiculous.

My ass it is. Let's toss out the saturation issue as it still isn't clear whether that's DF's fuckery or the console's. They're pushing 40% less pixels per frame, dropping elements like ambient occlusion entirely, yet still getting mauled in framerate stability. This is hardware they are selling at a 25% higher price point and this is a launch title. It's a fucking problem.

DF pulling some bullshit here.

How do you know?

DF said they didn't touch the settings. Can you confirm the youtube videos also left them alone? Wouldn't it make sense if you were releasing videos to best calibrate the gamma?

I think DF=uncalibrated, youtube=calibrated. Simple as that.
