DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

So is the capture the reason the PS4 version looks a mess in certain places compared to the Xbone shots? Some of those textures, man...

Guys at videogamer allude to exactly that

Footage was captured at a controlled preview event

They ended up tweaking the contrast on the PS4 because of it

Honestly, the fact that we need a close-up comparison of a very specific area on the screen switching back and forth shows how similar the platforms are.

I think the close up comparison is for the gif's color spectrum limitations. You lose too much detail putting the whole image into gif format.

Why you think it questions theyre credibility? Did you read the article? They say the xbox is doing some contrast and gamma tweaking and for comparisons sake decided to run both at 30% setting instead of tweaking it.

Because they didn't calibrate the game. They knew the comparison wasn't fair and went through with it.

It's defeats the purpose of the video.

I'm noticing the guy playing is more accurate in the Xbox One videos, but he seems to struggle a tad more with aiming in the PS4 videos.

I'm wondering if that's because the Xbox One controller analog sticks are just more precise when it comes to shooters.

To me the Xbox One version looks better, but the internet is telling me I'm wrong..

Maybe you should actually watch a video instead of just looking at a static picture? Unless you really enjoy crushed blacks and over sharpening in those images.

If you want a baseline for how the game should look in its ideal state, look at a vid running the pc code.

You will immediately notice that the ps4 looks very close, while x1 does not.

I'm not denying the PS4 technically looks better, but we're at the point that we have to zoom into frames to often illustrate these differences - differences that are in many cases, arguably, more subtle than early PS3/360 comparisons.

I can understand why hardcore gamers may find these comparisons hugely significant, and even worrisome, but to the millions of BF gamers on both platforms, surely they'll be happy with their versions? I don't see anything here to be "worried" about. Yes, we know the XO is underpowered - we expected differences. But we've lately come to expect dramatic differences.

I don't see dramatic differences.

Tellingly enough, when people watched the video first-go, there was a split in terms of which version looked better. That was the first impression and I think that is ultimately more important than frame by frame comparisons

This is the most interesting and probably the most detailed shot I've seen so far.

At closer range, the objects, ground textures, rocks etc seem much more detailed on the XO, but the distant objects are very visibly jaggier and the PS4 version is smoother for distant objects.
This one too. It's fine on the pc version..Strange

Its simple, to compensate for the lower resolution of the Xbox One, the colors are oversatured. The PS4 in comparison looks washed out, although that is how its supposed to look. The textures aren't better on Xbox One, DF said it themselves that they are equal.

That's not true. They basically said Sony dropped the ball and that by every metric they should have the better looking game but when scaling to 1080P from 900P Sony's solution downgrades the textures giving X1 the advantage.

After watching a bunch of videos of the PS4 version...it looks pretty respectable. It doesn't have the 1:1 sharpness of full 1080p, but there's no noticeable edge aliasing. The only real aliasing is on sub-pixel/thin geometry like telephone wires or the bars on a prison cell. OTOH, the XB1 version still has lots of jaggies along edges and just looks very grainy overall.

Digital Foundry is up there with Polygon as sites that have functioned like mouthpieces more than actually doing their job. Digital Foundry has gone out of its way to borderline promote the Xbox One over the past several months.

yup they are promoting the Xbone

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that, in this near-finalised state, the PS4 offers a superior experience on several fronts. The resolution is higher at 1600x900, as compared to the tried and tested 1280x720 on Xbox One, suffering as it does for more visible aliasing artefacts. Visually, the PS4 has a marked advantage with ambient occlusion effects too, which simply isn't matched on Microsoft's platform with the build we played.

So, in all fairness.. and trying to be as objective as possible...

Do you guys think that the average family or average gamer would notice the difference between these two?

Here at GAF, we have master pixel-peepers with falcon eyes, so obviously people see the difference... right? :D

But also.. people see what they are told they are seeing, like the whole RYSE debacle.. (people thought first it was 1080p and everyone believed it but when it turned out it was 900p, then suddenly everyone "saw" it .....)

The MUCH MUCH bigger difference that EVERYONE will notice is the 100 dollar extra price tag and up till this point, MS has not done a good job convincing people about Kinect2, even though it is a far more advanced tech in it.

Basically, if MS would put them selves at 299 and call it a day, these gfx difference will not matter at all, everyone would say stuff like "yeah but at least it is cheaper".

That is what bothers people at NeoGaf the most, why someone has to pay more for less gfx fidelity. If Xbox One would be lower priced than PS4, everyone would swallow the difference like a bukkake show or something similar and then we could go on arguing about games games games.. :D
I doubt the average family or gamer will see the difference between Xbone or 360 versions either. That has always been the case. This isnt a thread for that though (impact of IQ on casual audience and how it will effect sales).

They both look terrible, the PS4 just less terrible. Then again, blame YouTube's shitty encoding and 30 fps limit. I want real, raw, direct feed footage, not this blurry ass mess

The PS4 version trounces the XB1 version, but still, the differences aren't as big as I thought. Game's looking quite good.

Except it's not necessary. Just some people are adamant.

The amount of aliasing and shimmering in the XB1 version is immediately noticeable when watching any of the videos posted in this thread.

Comparisons aside, I think the game looks very impressive on next gen considering it's 60fps. It may not be 1080p but I think it's a nice start for a launch game and bodes well for future FB3 titles.

Like, seriously. I've read the first few pages of this thread and yes, I understand sharpening, contrast, flat black levels, etc. Has it been answered why the PS4 version textures look flat-out blurry in some parts? I mean, crushed blacks can't explain why I can see this dudes hair pattern clearly in this .gif but the PS4 version that detail is blurred. Does it have something to do with AA? A filter? The scaler in the PS4? My PS4 BF4 launch bundle is still a go, I'm just curious.

I can almost guarantee that they're using FXAA on the PS4 version, which is part of the reason you see less aliasing compared to the XB1 version. FXAA may be an effective and cheap form of AA, but it destroys IQ by introducing what is commonly referred to as the 'vaseline filter'. God I hate FXAA, very few games can get away with it.

I see what you did there.

X1 looks great to me too. They both do. My worries are gone now from all the "games will look way different at launch" talk. Give it a couple years, then maybe. But right now, we're in for some great gaming on both consoles at launch.

What is more amazing is that you can get the better performing console for 100 dollars less. Thanks Obama.

yet when you read the articles...written by the guys that played the game live...they ALL come to the same conclusion...one is significantly better than the other....

Good thing most games will be 1080p then!

I dont know what you guys are screaming about but the ground textures in both games are a almost clear step up from Pikmin 3 groundtextures.

So DF rigged the election, but neither candidate is strong enough to get out the vote.

Sounds like a new console launch alright.

Look at the ground textures. Are we 100% sure these aren't mislabeled by DF? The so called "XO" shot looks like it has much better texture detail.

They are definitely labeled right if PS4 has a higher res. You can tell when looking at edges, especially thin stuff in the distance, PS4 is rendering more pixels. I would chalk up the crispness of XO overall image, textures, etc. to being a different, sharper filtering algorithm. On top of some different color post processing, cranked saturation and contrast on the XO version (if not being applied somewhere else down the line).

I understand what you're saying but this isnt about the average family. This is about hardcore gamers who sign up for forums to post about their favorite videogames.

I can't tell who's serious around here anymore. PS4 version is higher resolution and runs at a steadier framerate with MUCH less aliasing yet some prefer the XB1 image? I don't even...

I don't think anybody should worry if nothing here stands out to them, but for my eyes the difference in aliasing is dramatic.
The videogamer vid put it into better perspective for me, one section they are looking down at a truck. XBOX version certainly suffered. I think the game looks great either way coming from a background of never having a good pc for gaming.
