DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

Like, seriously. I've read the first few pages of this thread and yes, I understand sharpening, contrast, flat black levels, etc. Has it been answered why the PS4 version textures look flat-out blurry in some parts? I mean, crushed blacks can't explain why I can see this dudes hair pattern clearly in this .gif but the PS4 version that detail is blurred. Does it have something to do with AA? A filter? The scaler in the PS4? My PS4 BF4 launch bundle is still a go, I'm just curious.

Comparison with PS4 image levels crushed and "sharpen more" filter and levels adjusted like this.

You can replicate this exactly in photoshop.

These are the source images I used, I only changed the PS4 "levels" (shown above) and "sharpen more" filter on photoshop.

I wonder why the PS4 version looks clamped? Or doesn't have the super whites like on the XO version. It's most apparent in this pic, when looking at the sun. As if the sun is dimmed, and not pure white, like in the XO clip. That is the most notiecable difference to me. Or perhaps it is from the XO version just having cranked contrast. But I would hope both versions have the same white point. regardless.

sorry if this has already been discussed.

Otherwise, yeah XO looks more crisp, except PS4 looks much sharper or better when looking at thin lines, like electrical lines or steal beams in the distance. Obviously an advantage of the resolution bump.

The close ground textures looks great in the Xbo version. Further away textures look better on ps4..

Not a biggie. Next gen is looking good.

Sad that people are being fooled by black levels, the PS4 version is a significant improvement and is pushing over 40% more pixels and at a higher average frame rate. That is huge. Both are inferior to the PC version obviously.

Is 900p and blurry textures next gen?

Really? Blurry textures?

They look exactly the same, but the XB1 DF footage has some kind of sharpening filter.

I mean, just look at how horrid the aliasing is on the One. 720p aliasing is bad, but the sharpening filter just makes it look abhorrent.

This is kinda what I was expecting, but it still feels weird. X1 and ps4 versions look fine, both have small things I prefer, it feels like a last gen multiconsole game where you pick and choose little things you like. Like last gen, if you're smart with your money, buy a console for the exclusives game(s), not the best multiconsole version because it isn't worth it.

Alright, I just "corrected" the levels of the PS4 side to match the X1 side closer. All I did was crush the black and white levels. I did *not* touch the colors at all. Notice the SSAO on the PS4 version around the hand.

It's unfortunate that the captures are so different, making comparisons difficult.
Should do this to other pictures as well.

Man, the pc version looks sooo much better.

Someone suggested they may be using FXAA, which when I use FXAA on my gaming rig, it does give a bit of blurriness. It does clean the jaggies, but it does it by adding a little bit of blur.

I'm happy that they've apparently used at least some of PS4's extra fillrate (which is double that of XBone per GPU clock cycle because PS4 GPU has 32 ROPs compared to XBone's 16) to give the PS4 version almost 50% higher native resolution and also a better overall framerate.

Most of the other differences are almost meaningless.

DF should have calibrated the rgb to match colors as closely as possible in game. Throws the whole comparison off. Dunno what they were thinking.

In the videos it seems like there's a bit more motion blur on PS4. I think that could be part of it.

to summarize for xb1 version, just keep on staring at your character's arms and guns. Fuck the objects in the distance

Its simple, to compensate for the lower resolution of the Xbox One, the colors are oversatured. The PS4 in comparison looks washed out, although that is how its supposed to look. The textures aren't better on Xbox One, DF said it themselves that they are equal.

I guess I could buy that, but why, even in the fountain part of the video, are we not seeing the sign show up in the building? Like, watching the video, it looked clear as day in XBO version, but it didn't even show up until later in the PS4 version? I mean obviously, I value performance and FPS over color settings, but, really, the IQ looks better on the XO version. Eh, it's late. I'm not a tech-say person like you guys I guess.

I spend a lot of time and effort properly calibrating my displays and use madvr for watching my films etc. So I can spot artificial sharpening and edge enhancement a mile off. The X1 version...does not look pretty in that respect. It'll only look even worse in motion due to increased shimmering too. You simply can't create details and information/pixels thar aren't really there through post sharpening. And looks like either Dice have tried to do that or the X1 scaler does it by default. The gamma is crushed on the X1 version as well.

PS4 version is clearly superior to the trained eye. With that said, I'm disappointed with the FXAA solution even though it was expected. I'd rather have no AA than their method of FXAA. And the 900p of course. Appears they've plumped for the equivalent of PC Ultra settings (minus MSAA) at the expense of resolution. Personally I'd have preferred a few compromises in effects and native 1080p but oh well.

Give me PS4's resolution with the XBOX's sharpness & pop. Please & thank you.

Can't we just merge the two consoles? Take the best from each?
You are in luck. Hit that settings button on your remote. You can crank the sharpness even further.

Better video than the DF video:

http://www.videogamer.com/features/article/battlefield_4_which_is_better_xbox_one_or_ps4.html

No crushed blacks or artificial sharpening. Also no terrible YT compression.

Wow. It is crazy how much different this looks from the DF comparison. Not to mention they talk about exactly the issues that make the DF comparison so bad. I didn't even notice the blown-out lighting differences either.

Well done Videogamer. I previously only listened to your podcast, but it looks like you've got actual reporting chops too.

So my query now is: Does the XB1 output at these super-high contrast/sharpness levels or is there post-capture processing being done that's resulting in these crushed black images.

Because if the latter.... :s

So....
Xbox One version looks better?

Apparently my eyes aren't strong enough to see the difference.

If your going by the poorly calibrated DF video that questions their credibility... I don't blame you. If your going by anything else the PS4 version is superior, but the PC version is the real winner.

People honestly think the XO version looks better? Seriously get your fucking eyes checked. Aliasing out the ass, crushed blacks, over-sharpening everywhere, horrible lighting (look at the sleeve), no AO, etc.

If people really like the way this shit looks they can achieve the same results with their contrast and sharpening settings on their tv's. Of course it shouldn't surprise me how many people like this over-saturated garbage considering the PC gaming world is filled with people who do this exact thing with SweetFX only to absolutely destroy how their games look.
