DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

Not a great deal between them, especially for the general gaming market.

The difference certainly isn't as big as most GAFers probably hoped :p

Certainly isn't anything close to GTA4 on 360 vs PS3.

XBOX ONE IS USING LIMITED RGB

Crushing the levels to Limited RGB and "Sharpen More" (one time) for the PS4 picture replicates the XO results!

I hope this makes sense for you guys.

This is the kind of shit I'm talking about. How you can you say, well, this is just crushed blacks when these two images look like night and day compared to each other? The XO version makes it look he's got proper hair textures and the PS4 version looks like less textures and a cutscene running in compressed to all hell Bink video posted on Youtube.

I mean I'll take better performance over IQ. Hell, the DF analysis makes it sound like it runs better. But it doesn't look better. I mean, I play PC games. I know I can jack up my settings and get to play a really pretty game at 10 FPS, but I just don't see where the PS4 looks better. I just don't.
PC version has the same texture as ps4.

At first glance the XB1 colors are appealing, then as you look at more comparisons, you see what's terribly wrong with it.

But the differences we saw don't just stop at resolution. Both versions are treated to post-processing anti-aliasing too, seemingly equivalent to the refined, high setting on PC. However, this doesn't tell the whole story. As you may notice in our screengrabs, the actual results on PS4 lack the corresponding level of crystal clarity we'd expect of such a significant resolution boost. This should surely be a home run for Sony's console, but what is likely to be a software-based upscale to 1080p delivers less-than-stellar returns, and for better or worse leaves the Xbox One with an often crisper looking, albeit much more aliased image.

What is curious is the level of "pop" given to the Xbox One's textures, where - bizarrely - artwork often seems to be more detailed than on PlayStation 4. In high contrast scenes, we sometimes see a kind of halo effect around some detail, which may suggest some kind of artificial detail-boosting post-process. Whether this is part of Microsoft's new upscaling tech remains to be seen, but we were reminded of the Medal of Honor effect seen in the Darbee Darblet review. However, what is added to texture detail also seems to be applied to XO's most ugly element - its highly noticeable sub-pixel break-up.

As I see it the aliasing is the biggest difference between X1 and PS4, PS4 definitely has the advantage. But other than that they both are comparable to each other. Not the big difference that I was expecting.

IGN just posted their comparison: http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/10/28/battlefield-4-xbox-oneps4-graphics-comparison

Again, it's not even remotely close to what DF posted. It's far more similar to the JackFrags videos. No crushed blacks or insanely jacked up contrast and sharpness. See for yourselves.

Edit: Also, IGN's video has multiplayer comparison footage. How? I have no idea.

Wow, that Digital Foundry comparison is really bad compared to this.

The Xbox One version for DF seemed like the contrast was cranked or something.

IGN's comparison seems a lot more representative of how the actual games will look.

To me it looks like it's different textures all together, the rocks aren't at the same places and there are more of them, HD textures kind of. What does the PC version look like in that exact spot? I want that closeup ground texture in my PS4 version, XB1 still has no launch date in my country so PS4 wins by default for me but blurry textures is a bit of a turnoff even if there is a higher res on the whole screen, maybe they can patch it in after launch?
They mention that some of the textures are randomized, like the camo sleeve. Not sure if that's in play.
Cloud missing on Xbone version lol
It was expended to power the game.

I watched a bit more. The PS4 version does look better so that's the version I'll be picking up.

However, I still don't see this large gap. The Xbone holds up pretty well IMO.

Was expecting the higher res for the PS4 version but what the hell at those gifs, the Xbone looks a whole world better in all of them.

I smell something fishy.

This is the BEST comparison video I've seen so far. It even has multiplayer. Thank you!

Except for the fact that the IGN video player has even more compression than youtube, making the comparison largely ineffectual except to show that something is amiss with DF's insanely contrasted and sharpened Xbox One footage.

Going strictly by the videos posted, the PS4 version looks better but IMO the difference is a lot smaller than people here make it out to be. I would love to see uncompressed direct feed videos of both versions since the Youtube compression is pretty awful. It could be that when seeing both in person on a 1080p TV the differences are more pronounced, but from the footage released tonight I'm not seeing anything that spells disaster for MS.

Ultimately for me, the price difference between the two consoles is what makes the graphical gap a bit hard to swallow. If the two consoles were the same price, I would dismiss the outrage as people being overly dramatic. However when you factor in the extra $100...I have trouble justifying an XB purchase, because I couldn't care less about Kinect, and am only mildly intrigued with the TV/multimedia features.

Overall though I think the next-gen console port of this game looks fantastic. For someone like me who loves battlefield but doesn't want to invest in a gaming rig to run the thing at ultra details, a $400 PS4 which gets me graphical performance that's fairly close to PC is a fantastic deal.

Can't wait for Nov 15th! A lot of my old BF3 friends are likely going Xbone so I may need some new GAF pals to play with on PS4 :)

Dudes you can just adjust the contrast level on your very own TVs.

But you can't reverse the XB1 image that way to get rid of sharpening artefacts ("if" that is really what is going on with the XB1 version of the game!)

No they didn't. They clearly said the PS4 version outclassed the X1 version. The lack of texture detail is Sony's fault not DF.

Let's stop with the tearing down of DF because we aren't happy with their results. It's one thing to question their methods it's another to question their integrity.

Don't you mean Dice's fault unless there is a hardware reason for it on the Sony side?

So the XB1 version looks better than the Maxed out PC version? Because that darkened hair texture is not present in the PC version either.

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
Soooo...difference was largely exaggerated ?

Sure seems like it, holy shit. Not incredibly impressed with either version, but I'd rather wait until I see them both in person before I really make that judgement. (Talking screenshot quality ONLY. Haven't read the article about frame rate or any of that stuff yet)

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
Looks very current gen-ish on my 24" Dell Ultrasharp at 1080p. You can instantly tell its 720p and then the aliasing gets pretty nasty.
Well, it's not just 720p aliasing, it's *sharpened* 720p aliasing. It's like someone decided that "screw it, this doesn't look bad enough, let's go all the way!"
