DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

Except it's not necessary. Just some people are adamant.

The amount of aliasing and shimmering in the XB1 version is immediately noticeable when watching any of the videos posted in this thread.

The differences aren't jumping out at me and a lot of other posters. I know that hard for other posters to except, but it's true. I suspect if it were a big deal to me I'd buy a PC instead.

I bet the discrepancy of color will be drastically different once the final versions are out in the wild....

There's already no consistency between each person's capture.

yet when you read the articles...written by the guys that played the game live...they ALL come to the same conclusion...one is significantly better than the other....

But Meus watched the youtube video and couldn't really see shit in that, so boom, then all the screenshots don't matter.... and all the huge anti aliasing differences it just shit you only notice when zooming in.

Hahaha

Look at all that sharpness and pop on the XB1 version!

Guys at videogamer allude to exactly that

Footage was captured at a controlled preview event

They ended up tweaking the contrast on the PS4 because of it
Not trying to reignite another shitstorm but the could being forced to use drones EA's capture gear and not being allowed to do his own tweaking be what caused that Sessler meltdown..............

So, I guess this means that Xbone's blacks are getting crushed *at the source*, ie. that's detail we're never getting back again.
Interesting move to sway the uninformed consumers, and judging by this thread it seems to be working.

Ultimately, I think TVSportsCalladuty XB fan will be satisfied with this, so kudos to DICE post processing guys for making things competitive despite the lower res and other technical deficits...

So basically:

- PS4 is 900p while X1 is 720p
- PS4 has better framerate
- PS4 has better AO
- PS4 has better particle effects

But PS4 lacks secret sauce sharpening effect so X1 wins.

It's over sharpening. It has nothing to do with textures.

It's like watching a DVD, increasing your sharpness to 100 on your TV, and thinking you're getting a Blu-Ray quality picture.

Hahaha, i feel your pain. Lot of people thinking oversaturated colors = better textures and better lighting.

Like, seriously. I've read the first few pages of this thread and yes, I understand sharpening, contrast, flat black levels, etc. Has it been answered why the PS4 version textures look flat-out blurry in some parts? I mean, crushed blacks can't explain why I can see this dudes hair pattern clearly in this .gif but the PS4 version that detail is blurred. Does it have something to do with AA? A filter? The scaler in the PS4? My PS4 BF4 launch bundle is still a go, I'm just curious.

It's the FXAA. Has the same result on the PC version. Hopefully Dice provide the option to disable AA down the line like with the PS3 version. Then again, the reason they patched that option in was due to input lag so they'll probably not bother unless there's a similar issue found with the PS4 version.

It's running at a lower resolution, so the UI elements still fill out the same number of pixels on each console, but because there are less pixels in the Xbox One image it appears larger.

Strange, I thought the UI would be rendered separately on the XB1?

Why, because they added a sharpening filter and insane contrast? Are you ignoring the almost complete lack of AO and the atrocious image quality?
Now the Xbox One has atrocious image quality? Wow, so much insane hyperbole thrown against the Xbox here lately. The PS4 looks better but not by much IMO.

I'm not denying the PS4 technically looks better, but we're at the point that we have to zoom into frames to often illustrate these differences - differences that are in many cases, arguably, more subtle than early PS3/360 comparisons.

I can understand why hardcore gamers may find these comparisons hugely significant, and even worrisome, but to the millions of BF gamers on both platforms, surely they'll be happy with their versions? I don't see anything here to be "worried" about. Yes, we know the XO is underpowered - we expected differences. But we've lately come to expect dramatic differences.

I don't see dramatic differences.

Tellingly enough, when people watched the video first-go, there was a split in terms of which version looked better. That was the first impression and I think that is ultimately more important than frame by frame comparisons
When you play the games at home, you'll notice the higher resolution and AA in the PS4 version.

Why do both versions look like they're being displayed on mis-calibrated TVs?

XBO looks sharper but it looks largely aritificial because it's just a contrast shift, and the blacks are ridiculous. PS4's mid tones are dominating for some reason and can't get balanced contrast either.

This is really bizarre.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that, in this near-finalised state, the PS4 offers a superior experience on several fronts. The resolution is higher at 1600x900, as compared to the tried and tested 1280x720 on Xbox One, suffering as it does for more visible aliasing artefacts. Visually, the PS4 has a marked advantage with ambient occlusion effects too, which simply isn't matched on Microsoft's platform with the build we played.
From videogamer.com:
And with the console war heating up as we edge closer to the next-gen launch, DICE’s shooter may end up being a key factor in the war between Microsoft and Sony, with the PlayStation 4 version displaying a clear advantage over the Xbox One.
The differences between the two versions will come as great concern to Microsoft. Just as it appears to be regaining traction from its fumbling Xbox One campaign, the revelation that at least one of next-gen’s major launch titles is noticeably weaker on its console will be enough to threaten to send the platform holder back to square one. It’s difficult to tell how big a problem it may end up being until we’ve compared the complete multiplatform launch line-up it, but if the trend continues with further releases (as last week’s Call of Duty: Ghosts rumour suggests it may well do) even players heavily invested in the Xbox platform could be prompted to starting look elsewhere.
It may just be teething problems, of course, and as developers grow accustomed to working with Xbox One, issues related to native resolution may soon become a thing of the past. But that goes both ways. With the PS4 off to a stronger start, the divide between the two consoles may remain a constant as developers look to push that GDDR5 RAM and impressive GPU in ways they simply can’t on Microsoft’s console.

Yeah, I don't think anything more really needs to be said. There's a subjective point of view, and then there's technical/objective view. To me the PS4 version looks better, and that just so happens to be backed up on the technical side by....everyone. The people who played this themselves already are also saying the PS4 looks and performs better.

what more do you need? If you think X1 version looks good enough for you, that's okay.

Holy shit, I feel bad for the people who are conflating crushed blacks with better IQ. I seriously don't want to see how their television sets are calibrated.

Not only that, but if they really think the overly saturated/sharpened look of the Xbone version looks better, they can just as easily destroy the detail on the PS4 version as well. Do these same people believe the Xbone version is superior to the PC version because the colors "pop"? It should be quite telling that the PS4 shots are way more in line with the PC shots, and the Xbone footage is the outlier.

This is without mentioning the superior anti-aliasing, higher resolution and more effects on the PS4 version.
