DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
I'm not denying the PS4 technically looks better, but we're at the point that we have to zoom into frames to often illustrate these differences - differences that are in many cases, arguably, more subtle than early PS3/360 comparisons.
Just look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0ycN0re_5A&feature=youtu.be&t=3m34s
Switch to 1080p and go fullscreen. Aliasing in motion looks worse than many last gen games I've played. This, IMO should not be acceptable, and sure as hell doesn't require zooming into anything to see how bad it looks.

ok so

PS4 - 1
XB1 - 0

bring on the COD comparison :D

Is it just me or are these difference about the same as 360-PS3 differences? Not a deal breaker for anybody. I'm impressed how close both versions look to the PC version on ultra...they are missing some particle effects and resolution but almost everything else is intact.

It scares me that based on how people are claiming the crushed blacks are better that they would think the Xbox version looks better than PC.

This is almost EXACTLY how we ended up with most modern audio master recordings sounding like complete ass despite the fact that modern audio recording technology has never been better. (see the "loudness wars")

Stupid consumers who don't know what quality is supposed to look or sound like ruin it for people who do.

We waited eight years for consoles that can't play all games at 1080p?

I'm not really impressed with either console right now.

Concerning the recent reviews of BF4 and Sessler's alleged issue with Sony:

If Sony is holding back hardware, why has every review of BF4 been done with the PC and PS4? Does this mean there was a miscommunication or something? I don't think Sony would be the one holding back considering they may have the definitive version of just about every multiplatform title this generation.

IGN just posted their comparison: http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/10/28/battlefield-4-xbox-oneps4-graphics-comparison

Again, it's not even remotely close to what DF posted. It's far more similar to the JackFrags videos. No crushed blacks or insanely jacked up contrast and sharpness. See for yourselves.

Edit: Also, IGN's video has multiplayer comparison footage. How? I have no idea.
uh wow at the jaggies on the xbox1 version. Running through the trees with those thin branches was a mess.

I'm mostly an X1 guy but I actually prefer the softer, PS4 versions of the static screens in the OP.

I can see why some prefer the sharper xbox versions but it's kind of like comparing an ISF-calibrated plasma to a display/demo unit set on "Dynamic" at Best Buy.

Almost everyone that's watched anything on my TV asks me why it's so "blurry and washed out". They're basically just seeing unadulterated source material for the first time.

To people who know absolutely nothing about image quality, more saturation is always better, unfortunately.

The important thing to note is that what people like about the X1 is mostly subjective.

That sort of stuff really comes down to preference.

But the superior image quality and less aliasing and stronger framerate are all objective and cannot be debated.

Personally, this resolution difference produced greater effects than I thought. A lot of areas where it looks like X1 might be more detailed at first..But then upon looking more it just looks like a low res mess in comparison.

The PS4 version looks a lot closer to the PC version. And the PC version is what the game is intended to look like.

I couldn't tell a difference looking at the video. I was skimming the article and it said that PS4 had a 2-4fps advantage of XBO.... I think I can live with that.

Holy shit, I feel bad for the people who are conflating crushed blacks with better IQ. I seriously don't want to see how their television sets are calibrated.

Not only that, but if they really think the overly saturated/sharpened look of the Xbone version looks better, they can just as easily destroy the detail on the PS4 version as well. Do these same people believe the Xbone version is superior to the PC version because the colors "pop"? It should be quite telling that the PS4 shots are way more in line with the PC shots, and the Xbone footage is the outlier.

This is without mentioning the superior anti-aliasing, higher resolution and more effects on the PS4 version.

Step 1: Set sharpness to 10
Step 2: Purchase XB1
Step 3: Sit 20 feet back
Step 4: XB1 outputs 4K res on a 1080P tv

They are definitely labeled right if PS4 has a higher res. You can tell when looking at edges, especially thin stuff in the distance, PS4 is rendering more pixels. I would chalk up the crispness of XO overall image, textures, etc. to being a different, sharper filtering algorithm. On top of some different color post processing, cranked saturation and contrast on the XO version (if not being applied somewhere else down the line).
To me it looks like it's different textures all together, the rocks aren't at the same places and there are more of them, HD textures kind of. What does the PC version look like in that exact spot? I want that closeup ground texture in my PS4 version, XB1 still has no launch date in my country so PS4 wins by default for me but blurry textures is a bit of a turnoff even if there is a higher res on the whole screen, maybe they can patch it in after launch?

I see the "crushed blacks" that people are talking about.. Seems like Xbox One upscaler does this with games? Also ups the sharpness too? Just weird from perspective because I'm no graphic snob.. Seems like I just want to up my sharpness on my tv..

Haha, image and video manipulation by DF?

Why is the UI scaled up on the Xbox One version?

This is the kind of shit I'm talking about. How you can you say, well, this is just crushed blacks when these two images look like night and day compared to each other? The XO version makes it look he's got proper hair textures and the PS4 version looks like less textures and a cutscene running in compressed to all hell Bink video posted on Youtube.

I mean I'll take better performance over IQ. Hell, the DF analysis makes it sound like it runs better. But it doesn't look better. I mean, I play PC games. I know I can jack up my settings and get to play a really pretty game at 10 FPS, but I just don't see where the PS4 looks better. I just don't.

You can keep on quoting that, but they very clearly presented the Xbox One version in the most favorable light possible. It sets a terrible precedent.

No they didn't. They clearly said the PS4 version outclassed the X1 version. The lack of texture detail is Sony's fault not DF.

Let's stop with the tearing down of DF because we aren't happy with their results. It's one thing to question their methods it's another to question their integrity.

From Polygon non-review from Gaf's favorite editor:

The most discerning graphics pixel counters will find fodder for pointed fingers and debate on next-gen platforms, as neither console is rendering Battlefield 4 at a native 1080p resolution. The Xbox One version of Battlefield 4 is currently rendering at 1280x720, while the PS4 is natively rendering at 1600x900. As a result, the PS4 version is somewhat sharper than the Xbox One release. Other than that, the two games look very similar over the course of Battlefield 4's single-player campaign, with the same lighting and framerate throughout (see gallery below for unmarked screenshots from both systems — see if you can tell which is which).

Unfortunately, at this time, we can't provide final verdicts for either the Xbox One or PS4 versions of the game. Microsoft has specified that review scores must be held until Nov. 12th at 9:00AM PST, and we were not given the opportunity to play the Xbox One version's multiplayer component. Regarding PS4, there were serious stability issues that repeatedly led to crashes after multiplayer matches concluded. As the PS4 is still more than two weeks away from its Nov. 15th launch

PC version lacks proper hair textures as well!!!

This is the BEST comparison video I've seen so far. It even has multiplayer. Thank you!
