DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

It's mind-boggling just how worthless most of the footage released so far is. I have to turn the brightness to 65 from 55 to get a good look at the game because otherwise I can't see shit.

They apperently comfirm that the PS4 picture is so brighten because of the recording devices.

True they said that is no difference in brightness between the Ps4 version and the PC version(1:22 min mark) . Both versions look very similar and they made the comment that they played the PC version with an expensive Graphics card.

Seriously, that altered gif needs labelling or this thread's fucked.

I get the attempt to counterbalance the improper DF capture, but it's not helping as people are just seeing it and assuming that's what the games look like as standard.

Everyone's seeing different images and arguing because of that fact now.

Agreed. PS4 version only looks "washed out" because the Xbone is reproducing gamma incorrectly. Note how there is less detail in the darker parts of images but you can see that detail in the PS4 version.

Crushed blacks are bad, period.

Did you look at the OP? The crushed blacks don't seem nearly as bad in Jackfrag's videos http://i.imgur.com/MS3GDy6.jpg which were ones Dice gave him, whereas DF's are their own capture. Don't think it's an XB1 problem, DF just fucked up.

Why are people accusing DF of altering the Xbone version when there are other comparisons that also show the contrast/sharpness VS blurriness differences? Such as this one;

From Video Gamer:

Here the PS4 version is still blurrier, and it's not from DF, right?
So surely this difference is how the game is, not from capture? At least certainly not bad intent from DF.

I'm impressed how well the PS4 version held up to the final PC build. Not bad at all.

Seems the PS4 is running Ultra setting variance with less AA then possible on PC @ 900p? That is pretty close to the top end. I am dissapointed in the AA issues, but well .. chalk it up to a third party game releasing on what ... 6 different platforms? I'll let DICE off the hook this once, but the next Battlefield better have a better AA solution.

In the end, we know Call of Duty is going to look well ... not even as good as Battlefield 4, so Killzone really wins the day here. Killzone looks so far above everything else FPS wise its not even funny.

64 player online is what BF4 is all about, not the SP mode though. Can't wait to see the X1 version running 64 player multiplayer with AO. Will they allow sub 30fps?

I think I need to post this again. This is what the "Sharpen" effect does to an image:

You forgot to do the second step.

Z2L4pTF.jpg

I can't stand oversharpened and contrasted images. A little contrast can be nice, but too much just hurts the image by hiding detail (this is sometimes why it's used). Sharpening should be used even more sparingly because it doesn't take much at all for it to start making the image look fake. Some people think it makes it look more detailed, but really it's adding more detail than is even there. And that's a bad type of detail.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
You can't make it sharp if the post processing aa is set to high

That logic doesnt work. The pic used from PS4 was using the "high AA" as its from the console, and was post processed the same way your TV will be handling it, still resulting in a way better image than the X1 one.

That's an enthusiast PC gaming site. Translation for non-German Gaf:

They're saying that it's almost impossible to see a difference between PS4 and PC version. They compared it to BF4 running on a high-end PC with a "pretty expensive Radeon card". They're also expecting that if you're an owner of a PC that costs less than 1000€ then it will look worse than on PS4 if you want to target 60fps. 60fps is almost perfectly available in PS4 version. Given the low price of the PS4, they say that this definitely speaks for the console and against the PC version. In this video the PS4 version looks brighter due to the recording that they're using. There are some effects like water drops on the windscreen that are missing in the PC version even though they are available for PS4. Shadows, level of detail, etc are indistinguishable. Game runs smoothly even in "bombastic scenes"

The conclusion: They're recommending the PS4 version because of the 400€ price point for the hardware.

Thanks for the traduction. It will be interesting to know what kind of config you need to match PS4 performances. It could be a surprise for many.

For that we have only their word. Until they redo the test after release day and reconfigure everything I'm tending towards clickbait and trying to even out any gaps. Leadbetter has shown form in the past as has DF.

.

DF certainly haven't earned any trust or benefit of the doubt with their articles over the last year.

Isn't that the point? The same as DF's capture kit or whatever has done to the XB1 version? I think.

But the PS4 image was hand altered. It's not fair to compare a hand altered image to one that is the default output. If you're gong to alter one to be the best it can be you should alter both.

Lol. This is pretty damning for the Xbone version.

I thought the PS4 version was supposed to be so much better than the X1 version? You Sony backers are having to post a lot of explanations and unrelated pictures to try to explain to us how the PS4 version is amazing, I thought it was going to be obvious?

This is wrong, as pointed out in the thread the PS4 textures are ever so slightly better.
Interesting!
I've only seen the blurry textures on PS4 so far and people said that you could just alter the sharpness on the TV to get the same result, which was wrong since the textures were clearly completely different, then there was talk about random textures on the ground and clothes instead which could be the reason XO looked crisper, the comparison shots just happened to have randomised textures in the favor of XO. But now the PS4 textures looks better? I need see this. This is roller coaster lol

Very rough translation:

The differences in brightness between both videos are due to the used video capture method.
They are very unspecific while describing their hardware. It's an "expensive ATI GPU" and a fast PC. Hence, they argue that the PC version could not as good as the PS4 version on slower systems. Overall they see no huge differences between PC and PS4 - "the effects are beautiful and very well done". They observed 60 FPS on PS4 and possible 900p.

Nice video comparison, not very useful commentary.

That s a bit delusional... Playing at 1080p+ with AA and/or supersampling at 120fps and full AF isnt minor differences.

Well maybe the guy was comparing it to an average gaming PC system. What card would one need to run BF4 at 1080p+, 120fps and AA/16X AF? Most PC gamers are not supporting that kind of gear imho.

Although i found the article interesting none the less..just to make myself clear i was not agreeing with it but i found it to be a bold statement and quite interesting.

We always knew it was going to be subtle. Hell to casuals many people won't care between current gen and next gen graphics. Games like Last of Us, GTAV Beyond look awesome.

The salt in this thread is fucking incredible. Holy shit, it's fantastic.

The Xbox One version is more pleasing to my eyes, and to a lot of other people's eyes. Feel free to cry about how wrong we are. Delicious tears.

Well then, I will cry. Because by the sounds of it, you turn up the sharpness setting on your TV along with all its post-processing effects. People still do this in 2013.

And that makes me sad.

We thought its going to be subtle, but it really isnt. Its a landslide difference regarding the graphical power, especially once you take the resolution difference into account.

The scary thing about this thread is that it suggests that many people are probably very fond of using 'game' mode on their TV, where the brightness/contrast are already turned up considerably high. If you use that mode and add in Xbone's already high contrast/saturated output, you'd get one hell of overly saturated, very crushed black scenes.
I used game mode, but I also calibrate the settings different to the defaults.

But apparently DF's image is not the 'default output', as evidenced by Jackfrag's officially-captured videos looking different. In both cases the image has been changed after the fact, not by the system. The point of the gif is not 'which looks the best', it is simply to demonstrate that the sharpening effect can be applied to both versions to achieve the look of the DF XB1 footage.

I don't know about you guys but seeing uncut MP footage makes me very happy

Why?.... because this game has colour in it! Colours that for some reason DICE didn't show in their MP trailers

T-T Colours for Everyone!

Edit: No more MODS for colours dammit.... so Happy

XB1 upscaling is pretty damn good and I think it proves Penello's point - some stuff can be accomplished through an intelligent mix of hardware and software to bridge the gap.

No doubt about it - the PS4 on just about every comparison video looks blurry. Bad upscaling. Look to Crytek's Ryse to see how it should be done.
