DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Were DF video botched to favour Xone version?
Because IGN and jackfrags comparisons looks better anyway at PS4 hardware. But at DF Xone version seems too dark to see the edges...

Not intentionally, but yes.

Most likely not intentionally. The Xbox One version on DF looks off compared to everything else. They admitted to their mistake.

DF claimed that many of the game textures seemed to be randomised, such as some ground textures and even the player's own textures (in terms of camo), so that would explain differing textures in some shots which seem to favour one version or another. But really you'd have to ask yourself whether anything DF claims can be trusted given the glaringly obvious problems with the footage they released: it seems to indicate a level of technical incompetence that is truly concerning for a site which passes themselves off as experts.

Without a doubt this is the case as well. I was just positing that DirectX might make some very small improvements on certain textures given what it's capable of. Nothing worth noting, obviously.

And DF is easily the most reliable out of the bunch. They explained they were clearly rushing in capturing footage and didn't have time to calibrate their custom equipment with what the consoles were putting out.

Xbox One version definitely has better textures. There's missing ground texture detail in the PS4 version. The hell happened there? PS4 has the same amount of RAM and it's faster.

DF capture happened. The settings were not tweaked for each console, and happened to be closer to optimal for the X1.

From the screenshots the Xbox One version does look a little bit better, but then I remember the Vivid mode on my Samsung and Sony HDTVs that would achieve the same thing if I wanted to.

720p to 900p with framerate differences and more effects is "console parity" now?

This thread...

Edit: As I said earlier, I do agree that the average consumer might not care or notice much of that when looking at videos, but from a technical point of view this difference is ridiculously bad for MS.

It's tough being on the other side of DF comparisons. All of a sudden, running at a higher framerate and higher resolution with AO already enabled (which x1 doesn't have as of right now) is somehow "slightly better" when the comparisons between the ps3 and 360 era mostly focused on AA methods and framerate, at the same resolutions, and had everyone going "i only play games where they're technically best, which is on the 360".

Can't tell if sarcasm? Why would I need an upscaler when I can play at native 1080p? And I also use my PC for a lot more than games. And the extra money isn't really a concern. I have money to afford it plus I can get PC games much cheaper. That said, I'm still getting a PS4.

lol, im just joking man. Inside I am crying, due to the ... augh ... can't even explain how bad this all is, on the outside I am laughing hysterically though. Can't wait to see peoples reactions when they get this stuff inside their own house with their own TV.

You had me worried for a minute.

How much of a hit does AO usually give? 2/3 fps?

It depends on the number of active objects on-screen that are being sampled for shadow occlusion, but that's a good estimate. I would imagine it's closer to 5FPS, as irrelevant as that might be to some.

Summary below for people who just joined saw the pics in op and Come to conclusion

PS4 Version =
  • Resolution is 900p
    Higher avg FPS(40-60)
    Have AO
Appear blurry due to Improper Calibration by DF

Xbone=

  • Resolution is 720p
    Lower Avg FPS (30-60)
Appear sharp due to Improper Caliberation by DF
No AO (to be patched day one )

This is the exact build I was going to use as an example, sans the SSD. You'll be able to turn BF4 up to Ultra, with all the bells and whistles, and get a steady 60fps. I'm running a similar rig with an Nvidia card. There is absolutely no comparison between what the PC is capable of and what the console obviously aren't.

What? Spending three times much money gets you better graphics? You don't say.

So, this ground texture will look different each time you reload to play this section? Because it clearly is in Xbox One's favor right there:

As is the rail texture in the foreground here:

The PS4 looks better to me XBO looks like an overexposed mess in those gifs. I have watched the footage and except for DF's botching I could tell that the PS4 was better.

I obviously know the disparity between price is there. I'm just responding to the claims that somehow these consoles version would/could/should look better than their PC counterparts. It's obviously not the case and won't be this generation. I imagine you can still get a budget PC for ~$500 that is nearly as capable as these consoles at this point.

Getting slightly wierd.

Why are people getting upset that the XBox One looks better to some people?

Not everybody will see things the same way surely.

We didn't have situation where one console renders in 50% higer resolution with better framerate, with additional effects

Only additional effect would seem to be ambient occlusion (and I guess better AA), but according to the technical director ambient occlusion will be added to the xbox one version day one, same tech as ps4 and pc.

https://twitter.com/repi/status/395138203075633152

And the ps4 does have better framerate overal' according to df, but somehow I don't know how much of a win that is considering the xbox one version's framerate is a pretty damn stable v-synced 60fps consistently throughout the campaign. I've watched some more SP footage, and it goes without saying that framerate isn't at all a serious issue on the xbox one version.

Don't take my word for it, look at videos such as the below.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0XMG2ml8VE

Look at the crazy weather conditions, trees swaying every which way, amazing atmospherics, rain, visual wind effects. I really didn't want to watch anymore SP, but I couldn't resist since a friend e-mailed this one to me saying I should check it out. And this is with the youtube compression and lack of proper 60fps support. Anyway, that's enough of this for me.

Both versions look fantastic. I said it. I ain't taking it back. :)

This is misleading.
PS4 version appears blurry/ Xbone version appears sharp outside of DF.
For example, here;
From Video Gamer:

So don't try and imply this disparity is wholly because of DF capture.

And DF is easily the most reliable out of the bunch. They explained they were clearly rushing in capturing footage and didn't have time to calibrate their custom equipment with what the consoles were putting out.
They explained that in a neogaf post well and truly after the footage had been released... footage they'd been sitting on for some time due to the embargo. Did they look at the footage and not see the obvious differences from what they saw in person when they captured all of this stuff at the DICE event? Did they not immediately notice the crushed blacks?

How can you build a reputation on comparing the minutiae of video game graphics, and then miss something that was immediately obvious to everyone else the moment they looked at the footage?

I have DF at 0 from 1 in next gen comparisons, so I'd say they're easily the least reliable out of the bunch so far :)

So why the fuck release any footage or comparison shots then. They are just ruining their credibility with each new article.

The issue was saturation (black levels), but couldn't the "blurryness" simply be AA? PS4 possibly using some FXAA.

Exactly 'this thread', people are so seething that both versions look pretty much the same that they are clinging on to any little thing they can to show the PS4 version is better.

I can't really take much more of this place.

The Xbox One version still looks better even with corrected colours. Sharper, better image quality. Some people are saying it's bad AA on the PS4 version, or very poor scaling.

I do hope it's the AA and it gets patched.

Feel free to leave then, but that wont change that the PS4 version is technically MUCH superior and everyone who actually saw it agrees that it also looks way better, which doesnt point at any form of "console parity".

Au Revoir!
