DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

I don't know if its the scaling or their capture gear, but the X1 version looks better to me. I'm guessing the ps4 version will look sharper on an actual tv?
Either way it seems the ps4 version has the more stable frame-rate, but they both are pretty close.

Either:

- Motion Blur
- Crappy texture

here is different shot and there is no blurr:

ib0gOrDzD8ScKG.gif

Look at the texture on the left side of the collapsible rifle stock. The PS4 version looks a little more blurred, a bit more soft a bit more out of focus. It's still there and it's probably due to FXAA.

Crushed blacks, sharpen filter can't explain this mess:

Why the hell did DICE put a vaseline filter on the PS4 version and destroy texture detail?
Ruh roh...

So the XB1 is the best version, even over PC?? How is this possible and why are the differences this big?

Rethinking pre-order...

I think the best way to compare is to compare each version to the PC. PC is the baseline

Edit: If you compare to the overkill sharpness of the XB1 of course the PS4 will look blurrier than it is. Not saying it's not blurry but not as much as it looks side by side with the XB1

Is it possible the PS4 does not upscale games to 1080p, just like the PS3?
720p games on the PS3 are not scaled & look like shit. Your TV has to have a incredibly good upscaler to counter that & every TV being made now has bottom dollar scalers in them.
Comparatively, the scaler in the Xbox 360 is incredibly good & compares with stand alone scalers that costs $500-1000.

Next gen is following current gen. PS4 wilh no or shit scaling capabilities & the Xbone with incorrect gamma settings to make things look darker/higher contrast.
Only flip side is the Sony console is now the one with the small tiny advantage in 3rd party games looking better.

:(

I think the intention might have been that all PS4 games be in 1080p native. Not sure how that's going to work out in the long run, but at least for launch for the majority of games that's not going to be an issue.

It's not really saying that.

The XB1 seems to have better detail in most of those screenshots.

Why is that? Is it the hardware scaler? I'm very surprised at all this. I wonder what Microsoft is doing to get that kind of graphical detail at 720p.

Look at other parts of picture. Blurr is only on his head where his jacket is the same on every shot with same amount of detail. If it would be FXAA problem all things would be blurred and yet his head is only blurred.

This points on motion blurr.

Insane For Sony
Wow, that looks downright awful.
Yeah, dat scaler man, lol... The sad thing is that's clearly supposed to be the visual show-off scene, a fixed view shooting gallery moment.
Every time there's some kind of slightly more intricate geometric detail presented, the image goes to shimmering depths of hell.

Another painful example: http://youtu.be/g0ycN0re_5A?t=15m43s (again, reminder for anyone opening this link - chose 1440p option, and fullscreen

DICE, please give XB1 version of the game option to disable this sharpening, and don't forget to include FXAA toggle to PS4 version, just like you had in BF3/PS3. Everyone will be happier.

Going back to this comparison a second, you can actually see the massively aggressive over-sharpening applied to the Xbox One version.

Even on the face, the tip of the nose, around the nasal holes, the eyes etc. Lots of edge halo'ing and what almost looks like aliasing as a result of it.

720p + over-sharpening = this.

Give Xbox One owners the option to turn the artificial edge-sharpness off.

why is his clothes different?

This was brought up a few pages ago and I believe it was mentioned that there are 'random textures':
can anyone explain me what the benefit of "random textures" is? i dont get it

The discussion is somewhere around that post, apologies for not being able to specify which one. Supposedly it is random as to what design appears and I believe somebody else mentioned that the layout of the ground in this image is similar.

Is it possible the PS4 does not upscale games to 1080p, just like the PS3?

After the scaling mess last launch, when people with 1080i-only sets (common at the time, I had a Sony RPTV that was 1080i-only for HD) had to play most games in 480p, I'd sure like to think they had learned a lesson.

I think the intention might have been that all PS4 games be in 1080p native.

They couldn't be that stupid. Any rational person who understands this business knows that there will be sub-1080p games this gen.

FXAA and upscaling is going to cause some blur. People shouldn't kid themselves about the PS4 version either. I'd take it over no AA though.
People seem to be enjoying the jaggies more it seems.

Yum, deliciously jaggy?

Arg. Feels like my eyes are being cut with a thousand razor blades.

Here's a capture of the same head in a different part of the scene from DF's video, with contrast changes and a sharpen filter applied in GIMP to the PS4 side. Obviously I'm just eyeballing here on my monitor, and I cannot match whatever sharpen settings are being applied in the sharpen filter on XB1 exactly, but I think it demonstrates that the 'head texture' difference isn't necessarily about base asset quality but could indeed be down to the RGB range issue + sharpen filtering.

With contrast changes + sharpen:

If you like the sharpening you could apply if your TV has those filters, but it's kind of double edged sword in terms of other artifacts.

Looking at this from a dedicated console's gamers point of view, the real comparison that we really should care about is how much of a leap in performance and visual quality are the PS4 and Xbox One versions over PS3 and Xbox 360. The honest comparison should be PS4 vs PS3 and Xbox One vs Xbox360. This is what I am really looking forward to!

Uhh. I'll probably turn AA on then.

Thanks for answering my question everybody.

Dont wory. We are talking about 180 vertical lines of resolution and 30% less pixels. In no way could a missing scaler produce a blur like this with such a small step to 1080p. I'm pretty sure its up to those two things: FXAA blurr or DF capturing device.

Too late, this crap has gone viral and DF did their job well.

To be fair it is not fault of DF.

Just stupid people making out of Motion Blur on this black dude head Blurr filter.

In every other shoot from same DF article both version have same quality textures without any blurr.

can we get captures of the 360 or PS3 version that match some of these next gen versions? PS4 version seems to be sitting comfortably between xbone and PC, as expected...but i'm curious to see how different the current gen version looks next to the xbone?

PS4 having a major resolution advantage and runs at the same (even better at times) framerate as the 720p XBO version.
And this is only the first multiplayer game comparison. That is truly remarkable.

PS4 at 399 has a much better value than the XBO, no doubt about that. I'm looking forward to the upcoming Face-Offs.
Only thing we need now is some quality Gamersyde videos of the PS4 and XBO versions.

YouTube's compression is awful and it STILL can't do 60fps. What a shame.

He clearly said that it's from PS3. But there is no reason why they would remove it from the PS4 version, so not sure what your point is.

It was implied that it there is an option in the recently released BF4 on PS3. The issue is that they may have removed it coming from BF3(PS3)-> BF4(PS3 & PS4). Can anyone with BF4 on the PS3 confirm the option to turn off anti aliasing.

Thanks for answering my question everybody.

You mean, leave AA on (PS4, on by default). I don't think the Xbox One version has the same option. That video footage shows the best AA you're going to on the Xbox One version.

Yeap. FXAA (AA) option is in the menu.

I hope you are right. If true the ps4 version got back to be interesting again for me

I have seriously no idea why devs generally implement those awful FXAA post process aa solutions into their games. Every games with FXAA looks worse and destroys the artwork and damages the shaders. It even effects the colours and contrast a little bit if analysing meticulously.

The softness FXAA is bringing is just awful and is the reason why FXAA is so cheap on the hardware, because its just a very bad solution for fighting aliasing.

Stop fucking watching DF video. Go watch Jackfrags on youtube. There's no comparison, Ps4 mp looks better than X1 sp. But it's too late now DF did their job.
