DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

xxracerxx

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Anything new since yesterday? The thread is way too big and i cant go to each page.

Hahaha, I love that you ask this question then immediately make a thread on the scaler being the secret sauce. Bravo!

But pertaining to your original question, I think you can get the jist just reading 10 random pages as it has all been covered over and over.

Not only framerate but also Image quality. Without proper big file video we literally can't see details what bigger resolution brings. This is why people don't see difference.

Add good IQ to lack of crawling jaggies all over the screen and there will be clean winner.

I agree. When you take youtube compression, possible capture issues, youtube compression, color space quirks, lower frame rate, and wait for it... youtube compression I don't see how these videos really show what the actual experience will be like. The only solid thing I have to go on from these videos is the aliasing which already looks really bad on XB1 I can only imagine how much worse it would look on my 60 inch tv.

This looks like shit.

Shit.

The jaggies are so bad I feel like my eyes are being torn apart. Fuck this footage. Fuck this shit right here.

You have to be a fucking idiot to prefer this to the circulating PS4 gifs.

Put the vid on. Saw insane colour bleeding on the steering wheel and then heard the reviewer talk about the capture cards giving washed out colours and blacks. Completely pointless video for determining proper quality, although the transcript of the rest of it is interesting.

Question: How often is the PS4 framerate outperforming the XboxOne?

Came across this image, can't watch the video at the moment.

Yeah even if you take awesome BlimBlim 1080p 1GB videos from Gamersyde there is still noticeable compression artifacts.
Youtube 1080p is actually worse than native 720p...

Native 1080p should take 2-3GB for few seconds :D

Could somebody come with a quick summary?

Would you like a summary of the thread, the article's conclusions, the pictures, or something else? I ask because the discussions that have been occuring thus far in the thread are quite broad.

Regarding the conclusion in Digital Foundry:
The Playstation 4 version is running at 900p while the Xbox One version is 720p. The Xbox One version analysed was lacking Ambient Occlusion which we have learnt will be added (but this may have a hit on the Xbox One version's performance). The framerate of the Playstation 4 version, despite running at a higher resolution and having Ambient Occlusion, is more stable overall; this has led to discussions in the thread as to how large the gap is in performance between the two.

Now, at this point you may be wondering "how has the thread reached 50 pages (or 120)" and it is because of a very peculiar issue. Digital Foundry's images contain crushed blacks (to some users this appears to be 'better' and has resulted in a large amount of discussion about why this isn't really the case/that this can be replicated by adjusting TV settings and does not factor in). On top of this, we had an initial claim that Digital Foundry botched their comparison, a later claim (by them) that they did not botch it, but it was an issue with the Xbox One itself (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-battlefield-4-face-off-qa#comments),

The primary discussion within the thread has revolved around the Xbox One's images appearing 'sharper', and the blacks being crushed, the Playstation 4 version appearing blurred to some users, and why exactly this is happening (that is, the source of the difference).

EDIT: I hope this is a decent summary, I've been trying to keep it as brief as possible but the reality is that there have been so many different topics relating to thsi footage that it's hard to keep it both very succinct and very comprehensive.

Literally in like 2 places. But we don't know cause of this. Could be that effects on PS4 that are not in Xbone version can pile up in some situations and give worse framerate.

AO is yet to be implemented in Xbone version and if DICE didn't improve performance should eat a lot frametime meaning even worse framerate.

Thanks to God the differences between 900p & 720p should be barely notable... it reminds me to BLOPS2 ps3 compared to 360 version...

If you watch actual MP gameplay on ign of the xb1. The entire map is just full of jaggies everywhere.

Yeah - in context neither of them can do straight lines.

yes but PS4 version doesn't look THAT bad. Xbone version due to low res is blurry AND has terrible aliasing. And because of how FXAA works and how it is dependant on resolution its AA is even worse in xbone version not working at all on distant detail where in PS4 version you can tell how it switches on/off

can we stop with the same shitty powerlines gif and post awesome ones instead? my eyes seriously can't take anymore of that xo aliasing crap....

I can tell which is what version pretty quickly tbh. Day and Night for me but ya know if it doesn't bother you much then that's cool.

lmfao. Even some"game journalists" are completely blind.
This website in particular has an anti-PS4 agenda though so its not surprising.

There seems to be some debate about the obvious difference in quality between the PS4 and Xbox One versions. Some people are claiming the Xbox One footage looks “artificially sharpened.” The crisp look of the Xbox One version is close to the PC so is that also sharpened? As someone who has worked professionally in video production for 20+ years it is clear to me that the PS4 version has been upscaled. This is why the game looks so much smoother and with less color saturation on the PS4. The benefit to this is that it also helps smooth out some of the aliasing found on the Xbox One. The downside, which is obvious, is that everything looks blurrier. Some people may actually prefer this look as it could be considered more “cinematic.” To each his own.

LMFAO this guy is more full of shit than a septic tank vacuum truck.

Just fishing for hits / pandering to his audience. No one with 20 years of video editing experience could seriously believe in the BS spouted there.

Am I the only one that finds the chromatic aberration popping up randomly very distracting? Granted, I've never really played BF, so maybe this effect (or something similar) was used in older games, it just looks really annoying to me.

yeah i have been wondering about that, perhaps it is a new effect for cover fire or whatever it is called.

Why didn't used SMAA or TXAA on ps4? I don't think is that expensive considering the ram...
Not ported yet to PS4 by Dice with low enough performance penalty probably. I do think Sony's studios have a working version of their own SMAA called TMAA, and I think that's what KZ:SF is using on the latest released screens, as well as probably The Order 1886 latest screens and Resogun (I know Housemarque devs have said they use their own custom post-proc AA, and it does look far better than FXAA). My guess is it was just not made quickly enough to be shared with 3rd parties in a timely manner for launch games.

Seeing people's responses here makes me afraid that future games that can't cut it graphically will simply oversharpen, oversaturate, blacken everything because people think it somehow it looks good.

Gross.
