Well it seem like Digital Foundry accomplished their mission. Many people on most gaming websites believe the PS4 version is washed up and that the Xbox One looks better. They deserve a bonus for Muddying the waters.

i cant STAND this attitude....did you even read what Digital Foundry wrote?...they said the PS4 is without a doubt the better looking version...hands down...no questions...

Problem is most people don't bother reading the articles. They watch the vids, or even worse, they just look at whatever the OP bolds in their post, or look at the resulting gifs.

I'd bet that a large portion of GAF doesn't go any farther than that to make up their minds on shit like this.

In returns, they lose all credits from now on.

But most of people don't give a shit about the article, they just watch the video. Lots of websites only quote their videos.

A good chunk of them for sure. Even after the mistake on the capture had been discovered there were still new posts cropping up in the thread about how XBO "looked better" as well as posts asking why the XBO version was darker.

People will always look at the pictures first and foremost. Especially now that everyone speeds through everything as quickly as possible.

Wrong. Clearly the shitbox by micro$oft has bribed away the journalists through money hat$, and even EA's in on it.

But most of people don't give a shit about the article, they just watch the video. Lots of websites only quote their videos

That is pretty sad, let the ignorant be ignorant.

I like the way the image has pretty much put a stake in the ground that visual quality should be part of your buying decision, only problem is they made a mistake which one is visually superior. I'm sure the image maker will try to disown the image when all 3rd party titles are higher resolution with better image quality on the PS4.

just because "most people" dont read the article doesnt mean you get to attck DF for being biased....the words of their review CLEARLY favor the PS4...

i understand your point that a lot of people just look at the images...it was crazy last night the number of people coming in and asking the same questions and making the same comments over and over again showing they hadnt read anything...

but that is no proof of any kind of agenda in this comparison...i agree that Leadbetter has def been somewhat of a MS apologist up to this point and has trumpeted some of their nonsense to an extent...but NOTHING about this situation involving BF4 leads me to believe there was any intentional attempt to downplay the PS4 advantages or cast the Xbone in a more favorable light...

They acknowledge tweaking the versions for "fairness", then mention the colors seem to "pop out" over the PS4 version..due to their fair tweaking..turns out the PS4 version can also be tweaked to have popping colors

Nah... to be sincere I dont think you will see such a difference if not playing them side by side. You probably can notice it anyway, but not that much.

But, you will notice the popins and possibly the more unstable framerate. Not in a huge difference but may notice that.

But the main point here is not aboout a huge visual difference at this game only. Is about how much better PS4 is doing, and by gennerally speaking (fps, aa, ao, resolution, motion blur) its a huge difference, that will probably show biggest visual differences in lots of games yet to come.

This. I mean, I can tell that there are some subtle differences, but for the most part, the PS4 and XboxOne versions look incredibly similar to me. I was expecting a huge gap in IQ by how much the internet was ablaze over this.

IGN video go to 2:00 mark. That shit looks like a PS2 game.

Sorry guys I was joking.

It was a joke based around the fact we've had months of people saying "there won't be a visible difference" "MS won't let it happen" "I'll eat my hat if you can tell the difference". Then when the videos come out with technical details that are only used to improve visuals (Higher Res, better AA, AO, Higher frame rates) those people turn to the bullshit response of "not techniques that improve the image quality, things I can see with my eyes" to which there's no response because that person could actually be registered blind so what can you do? he obviously can't "see" the difference?

Is there something wrong with the ps4 upscaler? The image is detailed, but too washed out.

Edit: New page

While DF comparison is pure shit, have you guys compared the shots Arthur Gies took? They seem to be in the correct parameters:

The sharpen filter on the xbox one version was a horrible idea. Whoever came up with that needs to get their eyes checked.

they acknowledge using identical settings to the ones they use for current gen consoles...and it backfired...

Richard even says he things the Xbone looks WORSE in the fucked up captures then it actually does...because he understands that the added contrast actually causes severe black crush....

He says that, sure, but it's disingenuous really to suggest that no one could think it subjectively looks better as shown in this thread. People are fooled by that showroom trick quite easily. He must surely know that.

Huh? Why would colour space have anything to do with the upscaler?

I don't see why people are assuming any difference in upscaler hardware anyway - they're both AMD APUs.

Some horrendous over sharpening on this one. Edge halo'ing all over the place. Makes the image look very artificial and aliasing ridden.

This. Also, I think the PS4 version looks washed out only in comparison. Look at the contrast on the last image. The left portion of window frame is almost completely white on the XBO version. Contrast is far too high. Makes all bright scenes look terrible and darker scenes more "vivid". If that's a direct feed, they are going to look even more screwed up on most displays where the contrast and sharpness are cranked up even further by default.

Didn't catch that. Basically the Xbox One version is like the TV's and mobile phone's that have the Picture Mode set to "Dynamic".

No, the colors are still off.
EDIT: To clarify, xbox one seems to not be able to display in full RGB yet. That's why you get those really bright and really dark spots on the xbox footage.

something i was trying to point out to people last night...and it mostly fell on deaf ears...was when all three versions are shown PC/PS4/Xbone....that ONE of the versions was out of place...

the PS4 and the PC share very similar lighting and contrast...even have the same "softer" (better term is probably smooth, or realistic) image...

The PS4 and PC were the two that looked similar...the Xbone is just...well...off, in every way

That's FUD at it's best for you.
XBO's output clearly has a different contrast and a sharpening effect on it. There is no problem in applying the exact same filter to PS4 output in the shader even if there is no h/w upsaler for some reason. It's a cheap PP pass and PS4 is running better than XBO at higher resolution anyway. Plus they already do some post processing so it'll be more about changing the variables than adding something.
But I actually kinda doubt that there is a h/w upscaler in both new consoles at all. These days and age you'd like to be able to control the upscale process inside your software and maybe apply some post processing _after_ the upscale which will be impossible with a h/w upscaler at the end of the pipeline.

If anyone does prefer the look of the Xbox One's high contrast look, just up the contrast and add some sharpness on your TV set, similar to what the results show here.

Also just noticed that the Xbox One version is missing self shadowing!

Exactly. Now imagine seeing the Xbox one version on a TV already set to "dynamic"! I don't know if this has to do with the RGB range issue in the current build. Whether that carries over to the final build, we will know soon enough.

Agreed. The last image comparison highlights this very well. The lighting issues are far more pronounced than the image quality issues (which is also aggravated by the contrast quite a bit). You don't need to be a pixel counter to see the problem. The qualitative difference is pretty significant. And I'm not even that good at picking this stuff up. The second picture, though technically sound, looks current gen due to the contrast and aliasing issues.

You don't "add contrast" you're supposed to limit the RGB values to 16 and 235.

Like so.

Meh... at the end of the day for the majority of people brighter and sharper means better image quality, that's why all tv's on stores are set like that.

And it's for this reason that a lot of people are gonna prefer the xbone version.no matter how technically inferior it is.

Doubt it. I think the aliasing and general IQ differences will end with even the average joe preferring the look of the PS4 version. It will look more "natural" and "lifelike" next to the Xbox One version imo. If most journo's at the review event preferred the visuals of the PS4's MP to the Xbox One's SP, that really tells you all you need to know about how these versions stack up on screen during actual play.

Not really. Brightness and sharpness issues are not as pronounced in movies. That's why TV stores get away with doing it. It loses a lot of color range, but still looks impressive. This isn't the case for games, where some levels of aliasing is expected and the color range for textures isn't as natural as a real life video. That's why people who play games at conventions keep complaining that many great looking games look like crap there. The aliasing, the over-saturation, bright stuff turning white, dark stuff turning full black will all look too pronounced. You'd never hear such complaints when they see a bluray video at a showroom. So that analogy doesn't really fit.

That's a great point. Most of the complaints about poor looking next gen games at conventions have been because of this exact issue. Games being played on sets that weren't set up properly. Instead with too much contrast and sharpness, just adding to aliasing and blowing out shadow details or highlights.

Yeah I think people shouldn't compare side by side. It'll appear washed out. When I wanted to buy a plasma tv at the store the picture looked so dead and dim next to the LED LCD tv's. But when I brought the tv home it looked just fine.

Looking at videos of other games, like Ryse, I don't know if this is an issue with xbox one's capability or some weird implementation that DICE specifically had to do for unknown reasons. Makes me wonder if it's getting fixed before launch.

Oh well, what can you do?

but I will say to me these two images look like an after(PS4)/before(One) calibration to show how a non-calibrated TV can fuck up the subtle lighting/colour tone in an image.

Totally agree. And if people can't "see" this without analyzing it, then an eye check up is recommended.

That last image his head looks detached from the body. Weird depth thing going on. Face looks to be flat on the screen with body some distance behind.

If you think about Forza and the way the bloom is so blinding in that, it sure makes you wonder wtf is going on. Multiple games where it seems like everything is either pitch black or blazing white a lot of the time...

That's because there's no ambient occlusion in that shot. AO makes a big difference in scenes where lighting is more indirect.

Good point. There hasn't been much variation in ambient lighting in the Forza videos, so I haven't been able to conclude whether the blinding light is intentional or some unavoidable side effect. But BF4 definitely highlights the issue. Watching jack frag's review video now. Seeing the same problem throughout the xbox one portions. The moment the player switches the flashlight on, everything just turns uncomfortably bright and the aliasing goes off the charts!
