Square Enix's new plan: Eidos focus = online games; Japan accelerating work on phones

Yeah, abandon Square Enix when they just fixed what many deemed unfixable with FFXIV:ARR, are developing what will probably be their most ambitious FF ever with Final Fantasy XV, are finally bringing another big franchise back to consoles with Kingdom Hearts III, are putting out great remasters with KH1.5 HD, FFX | X-2 HD, KH2.5HD and probably more in the future (FFXII HD), have returned to some more traditional non-realistic fantasy RPGs with Bravely Default and have some interesting smaller upcoming games like Murdered: Soul Suspect & Drakengard III.

Yeah, they are beyond hope. Get a grip, people. Stop with the silly knee-jerk reactions to non-news.

Dude, I don't care for FFXIV. I know it's a good game, but I'm just not a MMO guy.
And I am very excited (lol) for FFXV, but I got the feeling that it just might be the last console FF.

All I'm saying is, it's about time we stop expecting major stuff from SE. That way we don't get dissappointed and might just end up beeing surprised.

Been playing deus ex dc wiiu version and would love a deus ex remake of the original....

I will probably have a heart attack if they try to modernize Deus Ex 1.

That game is still playable and still better than every game that came after it. All you have to do is put up with bad graphics, that's it.

No no no no NO! Let fucking Eidos make all the Deus Ex games they want. Don't make them do the online-only nonsense. SE, please stop being stupid...

Where do they say they are going 99% mobile or not doing anything else but F2P games? Focusing more on online != F2P games only. It could mean that they want to do what Ubisoft is doing with Watch Dogs and R* did with GTAV/GTA Online.

And their mobile focus seems to be mostly about porting a lot of games to mobile platforms and having a few original projects under way. That's hardly "99% mobile."

I was being hyperbolic to make a point.

I'm worried about them not seeming to know what to focus on anymore. While I think the "FUCK YOU SE, YOU'RE DEAD TO ME" replies are dumb too (and you see them on every SE/FF related thread, regardless of what it says) it really is worrying to see them stumble like that.

You know you can be fan of someone work and still be critical? You don't need to defend every single move of Square?

I am not defending them, why would I? I will be critical whenever they start making bad decisions (as I did in the past).

no they didnt

So Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Lightning Returns, Final Fantasy XIV, Dragon Quest X didn't exist? (not even mentioning the portable games like Dissidia, Bravely Default, etc...)

I am so expecting a snarky response in the lines of "I thought we were talking about good games though".

Huh. So it ends, not with a bang, but a whimper? Interesting.

Thanks for all the good times in my youth, Square, Enix, Eidos. Was fun. Hope y'all find success.

If you want to release mobile games, then price your games accordingly, Square Enix.

FF I and FF II should be $2.99 instead of $7.00 on play store and $8.99 on itunes
FFIII, IV, and V are $15.99 on play store and $15.99, $7.99, $15.99 on iOS. They should all be cheaper, maybe IV is a fair price on iOS, but not on android.
Chrono Trigger, Chaos Rings, etc all need to have their prices adjusted as well IMHO.

Bunch of overreacting dramaqueens in this thread.

It's a presentation to outline to investors how they will make money. There is no place nuance in this. They need to put clear and concise concepts in the heads of their shareholders to keep them satisfied. While in reality there may be quite a few diversions to these guidelines.

What's sad is that even on the F2P front, Square enix isn't pushing out anything good.

All the bravest is a "swipe to win" garbage that can be played by a 2 year old.

And while Million Arthur's design is nice - it is still just a "click to win" game with card collecting elements. There is no depth or balance to the game since SE just constantly pump out new cards to entice IAP. The only reason why I'm still playing it is for the fact that IAP is relatively unneeded + nice break from PAD.

That and I'm trying to avoid getting into Kantei Collection...

I don't mind digital or online games, just not only that. I hate that this seems to be their current future and investment instead of creating traditional games for the core.

This just makes me sad.

FFXV hasn't been handled in the best possible way, I agree, but it was always going to be this massively ambitious game and I'm certainly not unhappy about the move to next-gen when that allows them to achieve their vision more closely than staying on PS3 would have.

FF XV handling is at Duke Nukem Forever levels, the difference is that the company making did not went under. The game went through multiple engines changes:
-Crystal Tools
-modfied Crystal Tools engine
-modfied Crystal Tools engine with Luminus engine lightning
-Luminus engine, which is not even finished..

Announced far to early, was draining resources from the company over the years. Like or not but some people were working on it the whole time, hence that prototype PS3 gameplay, CG trailers. What a smart developer does when faced with not realising their vision is they cut corners, think of creative ways to make it happen, or puts emphasis on different things (story, characters, aesthetics) to make the whole product more compelling. What they did is just saying fuck it we're make the assets anew for new plaforms and start development again.

The game should have been released years ago it would have made a lot of money for them and now they would be able to do what they couldn't do with Versus for the next FF game. The stream of revenue would be much healthier and company would have better reputation. But there lack of vision led to making sequels a'la Assassin's Creed resulting in weakening the FF brand especially in the mainstream media and market (lack of coverage for XIII-2 and LR, lower sales all around).

At least that's how I feel about SE and Versus to XV development. Hope the game turns out okay in the end.

I couldn't help but notice no mention of single player RPGs or single player anything.

Whatever. Fuck em. I just realized that I haven't bought an actual SE made game since FFXIII (not counting DQ DS remakes).

We still have the golden era titles from the good old days and I guess those looking forward to FFXV and it's many sequels.

At least we now have closure.

I put a lot of blame on the PlayStation 3. If that system wasn't an absolute train wreck in terms of sales, development, and costs right out of the gate, many JP companies wouldn't have gotten off to such a rocky start. Both Microsoft and Nintendo hit the ground running and companies were in disarray. Add in the success of DS and PSP and two markets shifted wildly. JP companies went with mobile and here we are.

PlayStation 3's fault. =)

(half kidding but I think there is some truth to this somewhere)

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Management has been downright horrible since the merger and continues to act carelessly.

Purchasing Taito Corporation for a valued 410 US million was a horrible investment.
SE has a vast portfolio of popular franchises; yet does nothing with them.
SE seeks the successes of Western publisher titles instead of being a profitable company.
Mismanagement of the Final Fantasy brand has severely impacted its return on investments.

In 10 years time, I would not be surprised if Square Enix merges with Capcom.

I feel like this incredibly important part of the 90's is just fading away into utter shit. = ( What in the world happened? Are there people that want them just making (mostly) telephone games instead of games for ya know, videogame systems? So sad.

I'd put it more on HD development in general than PS3.

You also don't see the words ONLY when talking about their domestic and western studios. You're free to not care about SE and yell fuck em every chance you get in an SE thread, but do not misrepresent what is clearly posted in the OT. At no point is it ever stated they are no longer focusing on single player or console games.

I wonder if going multiplatform hurt the game's development in anyway.

A kit if good franchises were killed during this generation and it changed a lot of good, once great companies into a shell of what they once were. I wouldn't blame PS3 alone. I think it was a little of all three consoles, and a lot of dumbass moves by the game companies themselves that resulted in this. It was like a lot of people were struck with "Dumbfuckitis".

What if FFXV or KHIII is a huge success (i mean like HUGE) are they going to keep making "AAA" titles in that fashion then?
I mean why even bother with those titles if they were going to concentrate on completely different stuff?

Well it will presumably have at least some kind of notable online component.

Whether that's discrete multiplayer a la Tomb Raider or otherwise I'm unsure.

In regard to their project flare and partnership with Ubisoft, I really don't like the notion of some undisclosed "notable online component" included under the hood of the product. SE's prior DRM attempts were terribad.

More Hitman? More Tomb Raider? More Deus Ex? High-quality reliable franchises that we can release every two years like clockwork, and sell DLC against till the cows come home?

No thanks, we'll launch a F2P online FPS that will be dead in six months.

*huge investor applause*

Thanks, you've been a great audience. See you next quarter!
