PS4 HDD speed test thread (HDD/SSHD/SSD/STD)

I see now. I was measuring from ON > selecting standby > standby (orange) > ON. While, 3.5S is from standby (orange) > ON.

That seems like an odd way to think of the question lol.

Can you confirm your speed is also about 3-4 seconds from standby to menu?

Very interesting! No wonder people were reporting similar times for cold boots and standby. This should definitely go in the OP for people to test for themselves. 3.5 seconds is fantastic!

Already done :)

God DAMN that's fast. Bookmarked that drive on Amazon, although gonna wait a while as I can see myself needing it atm.

You don't need a fast hard drive for this, standby keeps everything in RAM, that's why it's so fast regardless of HDD.

Got a 1TB Samsung 840 Evo ready to go, but my PS4 sat in a Canada Post depot all day. Will have to wait until Monday for any tests.

Okay maybe this is what's going on - Link to PS support site for standby

If you have no options checked for standby features, it will just shutoff, even if you select to go to standby.

My system is definitely going to Standby because it's always been going to orange. I did just try shutting off Auto updates and got the same results.

Your video is crazy though. It even skips the PS logo. Mind sharing any settings you might have changed?

This. Also, Rizzilio, any chance that you could test power consumption with your standby? I wonder if it's the reported 10 watts or not.

You should only see the PS logo if you are booting form cold. Going from Standby on his PS4 and the Vita just takes you right back to the OS.

Here is a video of standby to start boot time with the HGST Travelstar 7K1000 1TB 7200 RPM hdd.

Working on game start videos but youtube is a strange and scary place and I have pizza so it's taking a while.

Thanks for that David. Your YouTube image looks like you are one of the actor folk they always use in PR photos lol

SSHD is the way to go. Has anyone tried putting a 15mm hdd in their ps4?

It will not fit. The bay is at most 12.5mm tall, but 9.5 is the size Sony say you need.

I'm very confused then. I hold the PS and specifically press standby. Takes close to 20 secs for the light to hit orange. I press the PS button, screen stays black for about 11 secs and PS logo for about 8 and 1-2 secs for the main menu to boot.

Damn, big differences. Will definitely be upgrading my drive.

Cold boot time on the Seagate 1TB SSD Hybrid - 21.5 seconds

Stand by Was 22.

Need to conduct more test in the future but I'm just chiming in.

Killzone boot up 9 seconds.

You may need to check and make sure your Standby mode is actually functioning correctly. There's a new piece in the OP that may help.

Thanks for testing it out for us!

Stand by is yielding about the same results. I have all 3 check marked. Seems a cold boot is faster than stand by on my SSD hybrid.

Looked at the gif,as far as I can see yes I tested the same way they did

ps4_ssd_load_times_by_alo81-d6u4bke.gif

All I could think is how slow it was for an SSD :p

Don't have a HDD to compare to, but when my system boots in 10 seconds it is annoying how most games take more time loading despite having an SSD.

Samsung 840 EVO SSD current price list:

1 TB = 494,90 €
750 GB = 404,89 €
500 GB = 289,90 €
250 GB = 150,89 €

And all this can make think is how cheap SSDs have gotten. Seriously, it's super fast and never slows down due to defragmentation (or anything really), barely uses any power, makes no noise, can survive big falls while in use and is overall super reliable. This is something we could only dream about a couple of years ago.

Really? This is very interesting. I wonder what's going on to make the 7200rpm drive boot so much more quickly. There's got to be something setting-wise that changes things...

That resogun boot time for ssd is very close to the video I posted showing the boot time with 7200 rpm drive.

Can you guys try disabling the auto update features to see if you end up with times equivalent to cold boot? Just need to confirm if those are the settings that are giving the boost.

IGN's test results. Odd how the Hybrid drive fell behind the stock one when loading into BF4. Then again, the way BF4 works, the hybrid drive doesn't really get used to its advantage. Long play times in between each map load, and almost never the same map 2 times in a row, unless the server is like that.
I wish they would have tried out a 7200rpm drive as well. It seems like it could be the best kind to use (Aside from possibly the SSD, which is much more expensive per GB).

What's up with those AC4 boot times. 10 seconds on the stock HD and 57 on a SSD? How does that work?

welp, if we go by Strata8's thread then I should expect to see 10 watts w/no download, and between 70-80 w/download. i'm getting around that w/download, but i'm getting a contsant 22 watts w/ no download. first pic is with no downloads going on (meaning I turned off the setting to connect to the internet for the PS4), second pic is with downloads (contrast was dling while it was on standby.)

*Edit*

I'd also like to point out that when I came back from standby without the internet option checked it took much much longer to get into the ui (closer to the times other people were getting) including having to go through the ps logo and the safety screen.

I think there were a few mistakes made when conducting these tests.

I swapped in my 840 pro right off the bat so I'm not sure how it compares to stock..
I'll try and do some timings for this thread over the weekend but its pretty damn fast

Cool. Thanks a lot, Rizzilio. This settles it. It seems like the type of standby that others are experiencing has to do with auto update options and not some pixie dust sprinkled over your 7200 drive. This is fantastic news. If we can get more people like Morty to corroborate this, then a lot of websites need to update their timings so that the good news would spread faster.

What's baffling is that people like LiquidMetal14 seem to have all options turned on and yet don't get the numbers that you get. Is it possible to share snapshots of all your settings screens? I know you would much rather be enjoying your PS4, but you seem to be on to something that a lot of people are failing to achieve! :)

Yeah this standby stuff is confusing. I've tried a million settings and not getting the 3 second boot. Not sure if it's the HDD or what. I'm satisfied either way but that 3 sec standby is nuts. lol

This is the beauty of being able to change out your HDD's.

During this gen, maybe in 2 years, SSD's should get pretty big and should go down atleast double in price.

SSD is in. I wouldn't experience it any other way. It is way, way faster than the HDD. It makes everything seamless.

If you don't put at least a 256GB SSD in your PS4, you are missing out. Pony up the $150 for one and enjoy.
