Gotta say, while the games might be a little thin, Sony absolutely nailed launching a new console.

From the early reveal, to telling everyone exactly what they wanted to hear / stealing the show at E3, to the new game annoucements at Gamescom, to the clever ads and slow burn excitement of the last couple months, they didn't really miss a beat.

Driveclub delay was really the only hurdle they missed. Otherwise, a killer year for the brand. Onwards and upwards.

Microsoft's RRoD fiasco says otherwise. But we shall see. They need to get an idea of how widespread the issues are first. But hopefully they aren't huge in number and the issues can be rectified quickly.

The RROD became an issue after MS had gained a significant marketshare. People ran out to buy replacement consoles without even calling MS for repairs because they felt that they were missing out playing with their friends. Because of the nature of the RROD that level of brand loyalty is a freak circumstance and probably will never happen again.

That said im still of the view these problems are not dude to any design flaw and is simply down to bad batches from assembly plants that cut corners. Long as sony is pretty proactive, isnt afraid to compensate people affected and recall a bad batch from a retailer or two, they should be fine.

What they categorically cannot do is bury their head in the sand the way Microsoft did in the first few years of the 360s life cycle. There is an issue. Deal with it. Now.

Wow, that is absolutely a shitload of consoles. Impressive start. I am really curious as to what the European numbers will be. And what they would have been if the console had been available anywhere.

Damn. That's getting it done, Sony...

Wish I could have contributed but I'm on a budget until Feb. Infamous and less faulty consoles should be around then so it's all good.

So thats like what, a quarter of the wii u lifetime sales already? lol.
bu bu but the crazies on GAF told me the WiiU's failure was a sign of things to come...

Hmm, not sure if Yoshida has mispoken, as I don't see the PS4 having sold through 1M units at launch. That would be astounding.

Well on it's way to meeting that fiscal year target though.

If the dont decisively deal with broken consoles issue fast, their momentum can be slowed massively. The PS4 is riding a wave of good press, good marketing and a good price. But a vocal word of mouth can throw all that away.

Agreed. These shipments should find homes due to launch excitement, but there are several obvious problems with the console, the OS and the controller, and I think the lack of any BC whatsoever particularly is going to come as a nasty surprise for many.

Assuming that all those PS4 have been switched on, it's 0.5% failure rate . I have a hard time believing there are so few defective units.

But if confirmed, it's a great success

0.5% would be an exceptionally low failure rate. The failure rate by malfunction in laptops is a little north of 6% (although that usually takes into account a couple of years).

I'm going with yes and yes in answer to your questions.

No way MS don't hit 1 million day 1 world wide. The question is how many they have in the US.

For PS4 in Europe I'm going to guess at around 250k just for the UK (PS3 did 160k) and about 100-150k for Germany, France, Italy, maybe 70-100k for Spain. All numbers from my ass but taking into account the PS3 numbers.

If MS don't have more than Sony in the US, they'll just focus on the global figure. So we'll know if they sell more than 1m because they'll shout it from the rooftops, we'll know if they sell less than 1m because they won't shout about it, but we won't easily know the actual figure if <1m

It seems to be selling out almost everywhere, don't all signs point to them selling through their initial shipment?

So by the end of the year, it will beat Wii U's LTD?

I believe Sony has forecasted they will sell (i.e. be able to manufacture, since none will remain unsold) 3 million PS4 by March 2014 or something like that. That's still not Wii U's LTD but if they can keep manufacturing the things at the rate they have been at so far, they should certainly surpass Wii U's LTD by mid-2014.

Where don't you see it?
Sorry, poor sentence structure.

What I meant was that I don't think the PS4 would have sold through 1M units in 24 hours. I can quite easily see there being enough demand for them to ship that many units to the US though at launch.

If Yoshida hasn't misspoken then colour me very impressed. (Although a 1M launch shipment would also be very good)

That's extremely impressive. I was expecting something like 600k shipped, maybe 500k sold.

Biggest launch ever?

The thumbsticks are still up for debate (though they are turning out to be a problem), but the OS is completely fine and the BC issue has been taken care of through word of mouth and a year of press coverage. It'll come as a shock to some, but not many. Where are you getting this OS issue thing from?
