Andrew House: PS4 to be “in good supply” through holiday season

Reasoning of Absence of SKUs in US
Sony has wisely moved away from a two-sku launch, which also helps ensure that buyers don’t have a potentially difficult decision to make at the register. While Americans were largely unhappy with multiple launch skus, other parts of the world prefer them.
“Historically, Europeans tend to gravitate more toward a greater variety of value skus,” House says.

Further explanation to reach broader markets.
“You try to strike a balance, particularly for us with such a strong brand in all the European countries and across the Middle East,”

On sufficient supply topic:
“We are ensuring that we have the broadest reach to ensure that people are satisfied, especially when they’ve been loyal to brand for so long. On the other hand, we’re not engendering frustration by having a shortage of supply. I think through the holiday season that we’ll be in good supply. The sales target that I announced for the company is five million units sold by the end of our fiscal year. March 31, 2014”

I'm hoping I can just walk in and buy because I didn't have the mindset to pre-order

Having a single SKU was a good idea.

Hopefully the supply situation improves, I imagine BF will see some insane shortages in the US with the European launch coinciding with it.

I guess the SKU's comment explains why Europe gets stuff like this

And why there's already an inFamous bundle set for Europe.

I imagine this will be a trend going forward across multiple generations. As consoles become less exotic and more like their PC counterpart it becomes easier to mass produce them.

Good news for gamers in general as far as availability though it will enrage the business minded buyers

This is good because I plan on getting one before the end of the year if I can. I hate not being able to find something I want!

Just sent my broken one back to Amazon today so I'm hoping they get some new shipments in soon.

Im just hoping the one I got coming in tomorrow from amazon works ok. If supply is good, then at least if theres a problem with it, I can get a replacement in a reasonable amount of time.

They better hurry up and restock. It sold out everywhere. Even hard to find games or accessories.

Around here games are only sold out at Target.
But yeah, everything else is gone everywhere.

Probably this week, but they've got to have another bigger round ready for next week because of Black Friday.

Yup, they will have a restock on Thursday/Friday to cock-block the Bone, and then a mega restock for BF on Wednesday night next week. After that I expect they will prioritise Europe for a bit then get more stock out for the two weeks leading up to Xmas.

I think Black Friday will have to take second place behind launching in 30 countries on the same day, I wouldn't expect that many PS4's for Black Friday.

Hype will likely drop some after the Xbox One launch unless Microsoft completely fucks it up.

Well they have been doing a great job in fucking up these last 6 or so months. Instead of trying to attack Sony's part of the marketshare they are now desperately defending theirs.

Maybe our dear gamesmedia outlets will find some time amids writing snarky cynical pieces about Sony's successes and instead write something about how Microsoft managed to turn a sure win into the dire situation where it 's now in.

I genuinly think most people in the industry thought that MS would steamroll Sony this generation. But it appears there still will be some steamrolling done, but not in the direction that alot of people and publishers (EA lol) expected.

If I can find a Ps4 Thursday, and Ryse gets bad reveiws, Sony might just snatch that 400 right out of M$ hand.

On the contrary, I expect a -HUGE- shipment for the US on that day, albeit scattered. A small one this week, sure, for the Xbone, but they've gotta be saving the bulk of this for BF and Europe.

Yeah same story in Salt Lake City. I've called every store in the Salt Lake Valley trying to locate another PS4, gotta get one for the GF.

BF + Holiday. hopefully there's some games to fill the holiday stocking as well. indie don't really couch except as a snack in between.

Not to mention that they do not need Black Friday to sell PS4s. However some stores may use them to lure in customers.

Perhaps, but I'm already shocked at 1 million sales, if we say 1 million more in other launch this month then thats 2 million sold in the first month, how many more can they make? I hope I'm wrong though as I know there's plenty of people out there who want a PS4 and can't find one.

No doubt that launching in Europe is more important. But they can't ignore Black Friday. Last year Sony sold 500k+ PS3 on BF alone. They obviously aren't going to be able to have enough supply to meet the demand, but they've still got put a decent amount of units on shelves for that day. They don't want too many customers thinking about other consoles because they can't get their hands on a PS4.

I was surprised at the availability in my area. Most people I knew were able to get PS4s without preorders well after the midnight launch. Even from GameStop where they typically give you the "why didn't you preorder you shmuck?" scenario instead of having enough stock to cover walk-ins.

i will buy a ps4 when infamous comes out.

i was thinkin, should i just buy an ps4 w/ no games right now (i have ps+ though) or just wait and hope there's a bundle in the US and save a little bit of money?

what do you think?

As far as I know at GAME (I work part time) the PS4 is pre-ordered out till Feb nationwide, there are a few hundred PS4's put to the side as for insurance reasons because of the hardware failures in the US.

The Xbox One however is nowhere near pre-ordered as much, you can still get one and there are loads in stock, at work today we had our second shipment of consoles we have about 300 Day one consoles in the stockroom.

Well, if there aren't any BF deals for the PS4, then will they really gain a ton of console sales that day?

Yes. The item is so hot it doesn't need any sales to help it sell. Put up a line and wristband system or something similar for an item like this, and you have 2013's
