Killer Instinct | Review Thread

That is very worrisome if you cannot look up a person's connection quality to you before they join. There's no real reason to hide such information.

It's weird, I said KI is my most anticiped game for the line up, and now I'm watching an old ER episode and guess what:

Coincidence? I don't think so! :D

ER loved Killer Instinct. In fact, there is one episode where one of the doctor dudes goes to the arcade to take out some frustration and plays with Riptor. Any show that features Killer Instinct has a small place in my heart.

Oh man, this game looks better every time I see it! Really want to play it. Love the combo shadow effect thing. Looks so good!

Ha ha, oh wow.

I guess I should have expected the reviews after Skullgirls, but still, it's hilarious how mainstream critics usually assess fighting games.

wow only 6 characters and no arcade or story mode.... and it still gets 8's? ugh... sorry but this is not a complete game and should not be scored

The one character thing is stupid. I understand the F2P model is pretty attractive to the fighting genre, but I think others are doing it better (mainly Namco).
When I get my xbone I'll buy all characters right away, but I'm not looking forward to seeing the same one characters over and over again as an opponent online...

...it'll remind me too much of Vanilla SF4's launch and everyone choosing Ken :p

It's funny but I want an xbox one for this game... Forget titanfall, halo 5, forza 5, I want an xbox one for KI... Never thought I'd say this :p

"60 dollars is too expensive. I'll wait until the price comes down on sale. Why can't games release for less?"

"20 dollars doesn't give me enough content. How can I play without an in-game move list? I don't care that I can just print one out online, this is the worst game ever."

8 characters (9 if you get the special one) and that mode will come later. It's still the same game.

Surprised at some of the scores. It's a game with 6 characters and no character endings, it's obviously not finished but it gets some 8's... Interesting.

I'm afraid of confirmation bias among Microsoft-leaning gaming media (following the last generation of Xbox 360 dominance) having an adverse effect on review scores.

OMG. No way. The F2P crap in Revolution is awful. Fighters don't need some baked-in economy system. The KI model is darn near perfect. Let us buy the characters we want and it feels like an actual purchased game without all the transaction nonsense to nag at us constantly. That's the worst.

There are only six characters anyway, so variety is going to be an issue with this game for some time. That's my only beef, but it's the best tradeoff. I'll take that any day over the Tekken Revolution stuff. I hate that kind of having to earn stuff to play. Let me buy what I want and leave me alone to use it.

Then LocoCycle and Crimson Dragon would have done much better.

Tekken Revolution is damned fun to play, DOA5 U:CF is good too but I think Namco's model is better. Lost Swords focus on single player will ruffle feathers though.

For as long as you are allowed to play it before you run out of energy/stamina/tickets and have to pay or wait.

Let me download the game for free, try the characters via a free rotation, decide who I want, IDEALLY play the game with the free rotation characters and earn in game points/coins/etc, buy the character I want, buy the costume I want for the character I want, save $50 or more by not having to buy the rest of the characters who I don't want to use, and play the game with my purchased main whenever and for how long I want to.

How is it possible LoL has been around and gotten so popular, but no fighting dev will look at its perfect F2P model?

This is taking inspiration from LoL and will rotate the character. They haven't said on what the time limit is yet, though.

The thing to keep in mind is KI will be a platform to build on. So let's say they make a season 2 and 3, someone who jumps on the Xbox One later will still have a free download with all modes and a rotating character from a roster around 24 and possibly building still. They'll have more freedom to work around as the game gets bigger.

Yeah, I knew. This game runs into the issue of too long a wait for the rotation and only one free character, which is due to the low character count.

Maybe if there's a season 3 and the game has 25+ characters like other fighting games launch with, they can rotate more frequently with more characters free and achieve the best F2P model in fighting games to date.

Decent reviews, but seems a little barebones, even for a digital-only title. I guess it's going to be one of those DLC-heavy titles?

Yep. Thankfully, the DLC is actual DLC and not cut game content masquerading as DLC, but I still wish they had more time to develop.

Is it sad that this (KI 1) and Zoo Tycoon are the two things almost convincing me to keep my Day One edition preorder?

Not at all. In fact KI is one of the best reasons (to me at least) to buy this system. The other would be Dead Rising 3.

Personally, I hope fighting game devs use the DoTA model and not LoL. I would want everybody there, and you are buying costumes and stuff like that, instead of the rotating characters and buying them. Just my opinion on it.

Though I could devil's advocate myself, and see how if they rotated free characters, maybe people would learn more different characters besides the staples because only so many are free at a time. So maybe like Hakan was the rotated character in for 2 weeks, so more people would use him.

On a side note, I hate how Tekken Revolution is set up.

I think a review in progress is the only fair review. This game is not complete and there is absolutely no point in reviewing it. I mean I guess you can say that it will never be complete because they will keep adding characters but at least wait till they release all of saeason one. I rather them give it a buy than give it a score.

But it's a fighting game.

You have a main.

I want Bison and his costumes, but not T.Hawk, Ken, Rufus, etc.

In LoL you can get costumes for free because you get in game money, in Valve games (talking from experience with TF2, maybe DotA2 is different) the limited drops and random factor (and goddamned motherfucking crates) makes it unfeasible to get what you want without shelling out.

You guys serious about only having your "Main's" available? I want every character whether I use them or not.

But I use more than 1 character besides my main, and you would still have to learn the match ups and how your character's hitboxes interact with everybody else's hitboxes in training mode. How would new people even learn who to main? We have been playing for years, so we have set preferences.

If like SF5 used a LoL model, how would you practice against everybody's moves and match situations? I undestadnd you don't want to buy the costumes for people you don't like.

I can see you point of view on it, but I think the DoTA way would be better. Who knows if if they don't try though. I just hope they don't follow Tekken Revolution's model.

You have to pay for Skins/costumes in lol. They are not acquired with in game currency.

Oh damn, shows how much I know/care about that genre.

Actual matches, like in arcades before training mode was a thing

To be fair, DOTA's model is really only sustainable by companies like Valve. They have enough other income sources and a large enough built in audience that it works for them. Blizzard is probably the only other company that could do that.

Exactly, but I quoted someone being fine with only the characters they want instead of all, they support the business model, read the quote, then my response.

I'm fine with the model--it's just not for us. I'm sure there are people out there that will just play with the rotating character until they shut down XBL.
