Xbox One Hardware/UI Review Thread

Watched the polygon review and the best thing they could muster about the system is that saying "xbox watch tv" really works

Zzzz

That UI looks cluttered and awful.

I've got a PS4, and coming from Xbox360, I've got to say that MS's UI is still better than digging around in half a dozen poorly named sub-menus just to get to where I want.

Dead

well not really...yet
lol wow, that no surround option on HDMI in cable is amazing. Fucking thing mangles your source. Insane that they would allow this at launch considering how theyve been hyping up their "all in one, input one"

So snap is cool (and it works), Kinect voice commands need more work, the controller is fine, and buy it for the exclusives if they're compelling to you. Got it.

Kotaku's entire review system is a logical mess.

Don't buy a system, that is objectively better than the one you already own (that applies from Wii to WiiU, Xbox360 to Xbone, and PS3 to PS4) because they will get better in the future. That is what they've said all 3 times. Well no shit Kotaku.

Even with some features missing, these systems are still WAY more stacked with features and power than their last gen counterparts. It isn't even close.

They are basically telling you to wait because it will get better and I'm guessing they want to prevent our "suffering" through a few little launch bumps because it would be too much for our fragile psyches.

With Forza 5 and Ryse installed to the hard drive, in addition to a number of other review titles, our concern now is all about storage management. Here's where things get a little strange. As far as we can tell, there is no storage overview to tell you how much hard drive space remains or allow you to delete items in one centralised location.

8 is what everyone should have expected from Polygon.

Should be an interesting thread - curious to see how long GAF stays up.

Here's the deal. The PS4 has objectively better hardware. It's more powerful and in a smaller enclosure.

The controller is a wash.

The Xbox One is less powerful, but has Kinect and more media features in a $100 more expensive package.

In my opinion, the only way the Xbox One should be getting a higher score is if the Kinect is really amazing, or the media features are just absolutely jaw-droppingly amazing. Because, let's be honest, most of us have something that can play Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Pandora, etc. Shit, I have multiple consoles, multiple computers, two tablets and a phone that does.

I'll reserve judgement; but I can't see how the Kinect could possibly be that amazing, considering there are no worthwhile launch games that use it. And because of THAT, I'm hesitant to believe better scores. But we shall see...

Dude, they're fucking opinions.

Pretty much, for gaming...buy the console whose exclusives you like.

And voice commands will never be perfect. I still have issues with both iOS and Android voice commands.

should be an interesting time for people who get it day one - all those things will probably be fixed down the road so waiting later is probably a good idea but not for me im all in day one muwhahah lol

Snap is a major addition with the Xbox One's Dashboard. Try as we might, we can't figure out why. Snap might be an impressive-looking feature -- the ability to "snap" a variety of apps to a right-aligned rail, from live TV to streaming music to SkyDrive to Internet Explorer -- but almost no situations exist where the aforementioned makes any sense. Worse, the snapped application often runs poorly as a result of its shrunken form; Internet Explorer serves as a perfect example of crippled usability while snapped.

On the Xbox 360, music could be streamed from the HDD directly into games, replacing in-game music. So why does the Xbox One require both that we use Xbox Music to listen to that music and that we have it "snapped" to a portion of the screen? Being able to snap music while doing other things on the console is nice, but we'd prefer if the music traveled into games without a massive graphic overlay. This is audio we're talking about, after all.
Oh Snap!

This is the part where your credibility goes down the toilet.

I wish Sony made a bigger PS4, to be honest. I'm expecting the Xbox One to be pretty damned silent in comparison to the PS4. The PS4 isn't terribly loud, but it's by no means quiet.

And I suspect that's one people were going to be snapping a lot

they probably gonna have a patch out quick as blazes

This is the UI that people claim is objectively superior to the PS4 UI?

It's full of squares and transition animations.

Nah, it's this UI. Homescreen is cluttered, yes, but the real magic comes when you start popping in and out between apps. But, what do I know, I haven't actually read any of the reviews yet. :lol

XB1 runs hotter than the PS4! Damn. (not by much)

I would have guessed the other way around due to the difference in hardware and design. It does run quieter, which was expected.

What did you expect? They upclocked everything to narrow the gap. It was only going to generate more heat.

Sounds like Snap is pointless and Kinect is clunky. Boy, I am sure those people spending the extra 100 are gonna be glad.

Considering the $100 extra for Kinect, it's pretty damning that it comes with so many negatives. Those last two points are pretty big ones. MS needs to get them cleaned up and fast.

I agree, I want a level where I can say, Xbox, start up Netflix and play Archer. If that was the case I would be all over the xbox one. Hopefully it gets there soon.

This is such a mess man. No rhyme nor reason for this layout. It looks ok though.

If you’re a Redbox Instant subscriber, get used to calling it "Redbox Instant by Verizon," because the Kinect won’t accept anything less. There are dozens more examples like these.

Funny stuff.

Never believed for a second that the voice commands would work perfectly, if Apple, Google and the rest havent been able to do them 100% properly, neither will MS, so i am not disappointed. Just funny that people believed this would have been the case.

And dont even expect Kinect to work 100% of the time either, no matter how much they have improved it.

The most important is that the basic shit works, and it seems like it does for the Xbone, and that is all you could ever hope and expect at launch.

That is crazy. It is almost 2014 and you can only output in stereo if you hook your cable or satellite up to the Xbox One? Is that really true?

From Kotaku

" The units we've been testing mess with the audio that comes from the cable box, and are currently only able to output surround sound if you dig into the menus and tick off a "Surround Sound (BETA)" option. Otherwise, it downmixes your cable's 5.1 surround to stereo. My boss Stephen Totilo likes to watch pro wrestling, and when he does, he likes to watch it in surround sound. (The better to hear the taunts and the body-slams, I guess.) But if he runs his cable box through his Xbox One, the audio comes through in mere stereo. Microsoft assures us that a non-beta option for surround audio throughput is coming, but it won't be there at launch."

I'll take the one with the better specs and lower pricepoint, please.

EDIT: and get the other one later on, most likely.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
How about if the games are better?

They might end up being so. But right now, it's really subjective. PS4 is getting the 1080p versions. Outside of Ghosts, the PS4 is getting better or comparable framerates. They both have a couple decent exclusives early on; though I would argue Titanfall is the biggest exclusive coming up, admittedly.

BUT, this is a hardware review. Should be a score based on hardware, guts, heat, noise, UI, integration, power consumption, services, price, etc. And if we DO include games, I don't think anyone can say either has an objectively better launch lineup.

I hated... HATED... the Dualshock 3. Can't stand it. The Xbox 360 controller is my favorite controller ever. But suprisingly, I didn't really like the looser feeling sticks, new shoulder buttons, or new back of the new One controller that I used at the MS Store. And what's crazier, is I'm really loving the DS4 - some amazing sticks, fits great in the hand, the touchpad is great, the share button brilliant, and way better triggers - oh, and a very good D-Pad. That said, it's not like the One's is *bad.* Thus, subjectivity and all... .... it's a wash.

I think both systems would have been better served launching next year, but the issues will surely be cleaned up as we go along. Whatever. It is what it is and I want them both. Xbox One first, though.

Add that to the pile!

These reviews are pretty illuminating, if you collect enough of the disparate data. I wonder if these review units will function the same as the units on launch day, with the updated patch

It looks bad and I can see where's it's going as far as ads go. The PS4 UI is no gamechanger but it's spartan and functional. The Xbone UI already looks cluttered and spammy.
