Xbox One Hardware/UI Review Thread

Only read the Verge and Polygon reviews so far.

First off, neither of them talk about the specs AT ALL. How sad is that? And another great laugh is how polygon give X1 bonus points for potential but shits on PS4 for not having a great launch lineup. lol

Sounds like it isn't a complete disaster, but will suffer from growing pains. Not quite an ass storm.

I'd say from everything I'm reading it's at least a semi-disaster. Kinect doesn't work nearly as well as it has to, the TV stuff doesn't work great and is non existent in most parts of the world, snap (the big feature) doesn't work without serious lag. Everything MS tried to sell people since May doesn't work nearly as well as it has to on day 1 and yet they want you to pay $100 more for it (not to mention for worse hardware).

So saved data can be erased? Voice isn't working well.. Extreme lag with hdmi in.. Stereo sound with hdmi in.. Snap issues.. Runs hotter..

And some places are rating it higher then PS4.

Lawl

Fucking scores is beyond dumb anyways both boxes will be totally different in 12 months.

Next gen...

A year from now, the system will undoubtedly be much more polished. But the rumors of the rough/rushed OS and features seem to be playing out at launch.

Well, Eurogamer says everything works, despite some limited functionality and even voice is at about 90%. Not a deal breaker at all knowing that it will only mature.

I really like the NFL fantasy app idea. Too bad it isn't there at launch. I'll bet every console will have that next fall.

People who take fantasy football serious don't use NFL.com, as the customization options are extremely limiting. It's entry level shit really....which I'm sure is fine for a lot of people, but it's kind designed for joke leagues.

XB1 runs hotter than the PS4! Damn. (not by much)

I would have guessed the other way around due to the difference in hardware and design. It does run quieter, which was expected.
That's surprising. Maybe fans are kept at a low speed?

Snap might be an impressive-looking feature -- the ability to "snap" a variety of apps to a right-aligned rail, from live TV to streaming music to SkyDrive to Internet Explorer -- but almost no situations exist where the aforementioned makes any sense. Worse, the snapped application often runs poorly as a result of its shrunken form; Internet Explorer serves as a perfect example of crippled usability while snapped.

On the Xbox 360, music could be streamed from the HDD directly into games, replacing in-game music. So why does the Xbox One require both that we use Xbox Music to listen to that music and that we have it "snapped" to a portion of the screen? Being able to snap music while doing other things on the console is nice, but we'd prefer if the music traveled into games without a massive graphic overlay. This is audio we're talking about, after all.
Again, this is something I've noticed myself. I can't for the life of me see how the snap feature is useful in any way. Watch TV while playing a game? That's impossible and even if you could pay attention to both at once, why would you? It's distracting.

Wow no wonder they locked down those xbox one that got out early.

The big problem is MS was just trying to do too much and a lot of stuff got over looked.

This is still a system launch and people need to remember most of this issues will be clear up on both platforms. Really just buy the system that has the games you like to play or better buy both!

What the fuck has everyone been doing for 8 years? :(

Sony has been rebuilding after the early PS3 dog days. Nintendo made genius market decisions, and then made pretty bold predictions that didn't pan out, Microsoft gained marketshare at a incredible rate, and then decisions were made that made goodwill disappear.

y'all should be ashamed
If you'd like to record a clip of your gameplay with Kinect, you can say, "Xbox, record that" to start the recorder. To do the same thing with the controller, you have to pause the game with the the home button, snap the Game DVR app to the side of the screen and start recording, then go back later and edit your clip to take out the part where you paused the game.

Man, this makes me appreciate the Share button a whole lot more.

So it looks like neither console is worth buying at launch.

Oh well, I could only choose one, so I went with the PS4. Was thinking about cancelling my pre-order, but decided against it at the last minute.

Because of their mobile part of the site, I have a hard time trusting any reviews from there. Nothing to do with XB1 vs PS4 but I don't trust them.

Yeah, while their reviews are good and in-depth, their scale is so inconsistent. I think they rated the Windows ecosystem lower than the iOS ecosystem. The fucking Windows ecosystem.

I hope Microsoft and Sony have more people than ever working on patches year round. These UI's are half baked.

These can't be the multimedia boxes that you build your entertainment center around. They aren't ready for it. There are so many holes here to explore. Price together all the little negatives from each article and you begin to see how pathetic their sales pitches see when it comes to multimedia.

And here's Engadget: http://www.engadget.com/2013/11/20/microsoft-xbox-one-review/

The Xbox One may not be exactly what Microsoft thinks it is, but it's still a strong start for a powerful game console. Its sheer speed, versatility, horsepower and its ability to turn on and off with words make it a relatively seamless entry into our already crowded media center. What determines whether it stays there is the next 12 months: Exclusives like Titanfall and Quantum Break will help, as will gaining feature parity with the competition (we're looking at you, game broadcasting!). For broader success beyond just the early adopter's living room, the NFL crowd must buy in to Microsoft's $500 box. But will they? That remains to be seen. What's there so far is a very competent game box with an expensive camera and only a few exclusive games differentiating it from the competition.

Don't click on the What's new section, never see any ads? Is that really so hard?

Oh that's great. Not use the consoles features, what a breakthrough. Hold on, I'm a step ahead of you, let's turn the whole thing off. No ads, and it's pretty easy too.

Man, you missed the priceless opportunity to let the internet know that you cancelled your pre-order!

I was thinking Skype chat while playing a game? Music snap while doing something else?

It's a useful feature, I don't think it's a killer feature. I mean it's same as W8 snap.

It's something that can grow in usefulness as more apps are released, etc.

It is really understated but the share button is actually really smart. I use it regularly and take screenshots. Really easy and intuitive, the way to do it on Xbox sounds the complete opposite.

sounds like the system has some cool ideas and capabilities but is going through more than a few growing pains. that sounds entirely reasonable. both the ps3 and 360 are vastly different machines from when they first launched, so i dont doubt updates for the xbox one (and ps4) will iron out the rough bits.

super excited for this friday!

So MS is following the same history of, "Wait till the first SP."

All of the console companies do it. If you buy a console at launch, you are an early adopter. Have to live with it. Just look back at the launch capabilities of the PS3 and 360, both were very limited or delayed in non-gaming functionality.

Another XboxOne head-scratcher. Offers beefy 500GB hard drive...doesn't let you see how much of the drive you've used

Most of this stuff sounds like a work in progress (welcome to a hardware launch folks) but this one is baffling.

Yeah, I'm not digging that UI at all... my eyes don't know where to look. It's like EVERYTHING AT ONCE.

Pins on the left, main stuff in the middle and some media type stuff to the right.

You're meant to bypass that all with voice anyway - when it works and if you choose to use it of course.

yeah pretty sure they'll refine the shit out of stuff that is pork up, I remember the original xbox UI blades shit is bound to change a few times in the years coming it's just if you want to jump into jungle of things most likely not working and missing features that are oddly not there yet.

Considering the $100 extra for Kinect, it's pretty damning that it comes with so many negatives. Those last two points are pretty big ones. MS needs to get them cleaned up and fast.

Jesus, at least copy and paste the whole thing.

The good
•System is nearly silent when running.
•Relatively energy efficient.
•Great looking lighting effects and detailed characters.
•Redesigned analog sticks, shoulder buttons, and d-pad are incredibly comfortable.
•Improved rumble motor and new rumbling triggers.
•Instant-on mode goes from power button to loaded game incredibly quickly.
•Clean, sparse menu helps you find what you need efficiently.
•Voice can be extremely efficient for launching games and apps and searching.
•Snapping video is the new picture-in-picture.
•Switching between apps is fast and snappy.
•Upload studio is a great little clip editor.
•TV pass-through is lag-free and easy to use.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

It is hardly a main feature. More like a disorganized wall of activity. It isn't the end all be all of the system.

Your hyperbole is amazing though.

Jesus, at least copy and paste the whole thing.

Deleting unsaved data is a huge deal, though. It far outweighs the good. Have to see how widespread it is at launch.

The Verge said:
But while the ideas are great, the execution just isn’t there. For starters, passing my TiVo through the Xbox One darkened the picture and stripped the signal of its Dolby Digital audio encoding, taking away surround sound. There’s a beta option to transcode Dolby into DTS or PCM audio, but it didn’t seem to work for me, and Microsoft says it might cause additional video distortion with some cable boxes until it’s out of beta. If you have a home theater system, this is an immediate dealbreaker; I wouldn’t let the Xbox One near your cable box until it can pass the signal unmolested.

That is a massive blow for TV pass through. I think most people will go without distorted TV than let the Xbox molest their picture.

The contrasting XB1/PS4 interfaces remind me of Android/iOS. Android's a bit cluttered and more difficult to just get to what you want, but it also gives you way more choice in how you want to get things done. iOS lets you get things done with little fuss, but it doesn't have many options for the "power users" and you're led along by their design choices.

I prefer iOS/PS4, but I don't begrudge those who prefer Android/XB1.

That was the one big head scratcher for me in the Polygon review. They dock the PS4 because of the launch lineup. It is a HARDWARE REVIEW. They get to review the games, and they already gave the PS4 launch games what they feel they deserve. Then, they bring them up again in the Hardware Review, and dock their score for it.

I assume they will review the Xbox One Exclusives pretty well, considering they do not seem to have any effect on the Xbox One HARDWARE REVIEW.
