Ubisoft: "On PC, you don't usually care about performance"; just buy a bigger GPU

I don't know about the rest of my PC bros, but who gives a shit about these AAA devs.

When you have all these great indie titles, Kickstarter pushing out things like Star Citizen, Wasteland 2, Project Eternity from known developers. etc. I don't really care if Ubisoft wants to release their half ass ports on PC and then cry when no one buys their game.

While it is saddening to see this sort of thing, you are right. I hope PC players simply become disenfranchised by such AAA devs if this is their stance and poor porting. I find it almost amusing that my most anticipated game is actually the walking dead season 2 along with primarily pc based titles such as star citizen.

I certainly hope that Valve's push for openness and more lounge oriented machines, increases the numbers of pc gamers and quality of new, innovative and creative games as opposed to the yearly release of cluster fuck titles

You know every publisher has their problems occasionally with one game or another. But Ubisoft is the Dollar Store of publishers. Their games are of poor quality and lack almost any originality or art that sets them apart as original or superior.

That's really how they view the PC market and why they refuse to optimize for it. "Oh, those rich PC gamers will have a new video card in a few weeks anyways!"

Ugh. I try to get at least 2 years between video cards. And shit like this is why I'm basically giving up on PC gaming soon. Once my hardware is obsolete I'm just not going to upgrade. Why bother. Not worth the cost when devs don't even optimize.

Stop looking to AAA games for enjoyment. Check out Wasteland 2, Project Eternity, Age of Decadence, etc. These games are built for PC and they offer a complex and rewarding gameplay experience that AAA console titles just can't match.

I don't think it exist a gpu who can handle ubi game without dips. NVIDIA need to do something, it's just unacceptable.

Some of us like these AAA games, though. I really want AC4. It looks like a blast. And I will still probably buy it sometime soon.

But this sucks. Its lazy and it sucks.

They are probably doing somthing like this

If(GPU older than 1 day)
{stutter();
fpsdrops(randomnumber 10-20);
Justrunlikeshit();}
else{}

Its not incompetence. Its a feature.

Sales of Ubisoft, EA, etc. games on PC platforms don't warrant anything other than the bare minimum PC port, deal with it guys, that's not gonna change.
I wish they just abandoned PC like Rockstar.

Huh? Current snapshot from bf4stats.com:
u5oL8iJ.png

I've seen it peak at 110k on other days as well. While the others seem to peak at around 80k/80k/25k. It seems like a platform that merits support. Surprised they even reach those numbers with Origin.

Rockstar reported about 4 million sales on GTA IV PC as well. Why ignore that money?

The thing is ubisoft, the game looks like an up port from 8 year old consoles (and is exactly that)

Something like crysis back in 2007, that had an excuse to need a supercomputer

not this

Ubisoft and EA are trying really hard for that console only gaming future, huh?

"Just buy a bigger GPU."

the funny thing is that no matter how bad a ubisoft pc port is, it still runs drastically better than the console ones.

Ubisoft hasn't given a fuck about optimizing their console versions of open world games for YEARS.

Does it kinda run at ~25fps? Good enough!

See all your shit during a Steam sale, Ubisoft. I'll be damned if I pay full price for games where you don't even make the friggin effort to not require a PC with SLI Titans to not run like shit. I have a GTX 680 and if I can't get good performance for at least the next two years with only turning down a few high cost effects like HBAO and the like then you can bet you will never see $60 from me. Get used to those $12 transfers to your bank account from Steam if you even get that from me.

As much as I dislike the quality of their PC ports, the games themselves are usually quite good.

AC:R and ACIII felt a bit long in the tooth, but generally their games are good.

Oh well, it was about time some of the triple-A publishers admitted it so openly.
Been like that since, errrm, forever?

I guess I'm lucky I don't like most of their games these days anyway.

The only thing I was looking forward to was the Division, then I remembered the publisher.

We are in for reduced visual fidelity on release when compared to the initial showing.
Forced Uplay integration for their DRM.
Good chance of some significant dumbing down.

Probably going to pass.

Source? Were they $60 1st month sales like consoles bring or $5-10 Steam 4M sales?

Why is that relevant? Its still a significant amount of revenue.

Its also fallacious that you jumped on that part of the argument, while ignoring the PC sales of BF4 on launch.

Yeah, you show them what's what by still giving them $12.

I dunno. How many of those 1st month console sales were people buying the used copy from Gamestop for $55? Or do they not include them in their sales figures because they don't get any money from that sale?

It's clear the big AAA publishers desperately need ps4 and xbone to be a runaway hit from the getgo and not a slow burn like last generation.
That means competing platforms gotta be taken out of the equasion when it
comes to consumer decisions asap.

No, used sales aren't included.

So 4M sales figure can be thrown out then. Also let's wait a month or two when next gen starts to compare PC vs. Console on Battlefield, and let's not use bf4stats.com, an unofficial site.

It is as if all the game companies - PC, console, handheld, or whatever - are all run by business people and not gamemakers any more.

How could someone who makes the product be so wrong about how to use it, or solve problems that arise in using it?

Its ironic, because that same market that is being overlooked by AAA publishers, also has the most disposable income.

Yep. Hilarious considering they obviously know this is the case. Since apparently we'll spend $500 on a new GPU just for a few extra FPS

but they won't put in the time to ensure we get a good port.

I wouldn't say all the best. So many amazing Nintendo, Sony, and MS exclusives on their consoles that shouldn't be missed.

Don't get me wrong, there's still some great AAA devs out there but those are the first party studios for MS/Nintendo/Sony. I was referring to the AAA multiplatforms devs/pubs like EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Bethesda, Epic, Crytek and Rockstar who don't really care about PC.

Wait, why are we throwing out the 4 million in sales? You did a jump there.

The point I was making is that both consoles and pc have different retail environments with the PC offering a scaling set of price structures that still at least give money back directly to the publisher and consoles having a large section of its retail environment dedicated to not sending any money back to the publisher.

Translation: Costs too much and requires too much effort to create a game up to standards.

If one man can port a game that is perfectly optimized, variable FPS (120+), optimized controls/menu for both M/KB and controller, and renders at any resolution, then I have a hard time believing Ubisoft doesn't have the resources to produce a similar product.

When has this ever not been the case?

The 90's and early 2000's, but they have since been assimilated into one company or another.

I'm having trouble finding the source at the moment, so I looked at my chat logs back when I found it and it's dated from October 30th. I'm pretty sure it was an article I read here. I wanna look for it but I gotta go to class. So feel free to dismiss it as "unsourced" for now until I find it again. Back in July they reported 25 million overall for all 3 platforms IIRC.

The point was more related that it's basically free money left on the table to not do a port, regardless of how much those numbers fill the entire total. For now, the 4 million figure doesn't look that insane considering other sources said about 700k on its original release, and there's been a lot of sales for it since then and it's been a consistent top seller. I will try to find that article tho.

EDIT: Actually that's the date of the "Take Two FYQ2 2014", if anyone can help me look those up.

Also platform holders caterign to all your needs , liek providing dedicated servers for your online games, millions to co-advertise your games, pay you for exclusive dlcs etc. None which exist on PC.

Yeah we run those ourselves. No crap, no fuss just dive in.

Pretty much yepp but it doesn't stop me from wanting to run around like Miku/Horsie/Superman in GTAIV from time to time

congrats ubisoft ... this is the kind of shit you don't tell , even if you do it ..

i kinda appreciate the honnesty at least.

Appreciating the honesty? That's an interesting view. I hope they appreciate it when I'm going to boycott them this generation. Only bought one friggin game from them this generation. Will be an easy task to drop them completely.

The PC platform will be okay without Ubisoft's open world factory garbage.

Also, PC is only becoming more popular as a platform, so I don't know where you're getting "so many don't care anymore."

I just get discouraged when I see shit like this from Ubisoft. Or a 30 FPS locked racing game from EA. And a terrible port of Call of Duty from Infinity Ward (not that I care about CoD, but they clearly aren't all that interested in the PC platform).

I don't know about the rest of my PC bros, but who gives a shit about these AAA devs.

Well yeah, there are those. The problem is I WANT to play these ports on PC and I DON'T want them to suck. Arrrrrg.

You damn right baby. I piss $12 bills like it ain't a thing. If the game isn't a broken pile of crap and is just poorly optimized and I'm interested in it then why the hell not buy it at a reduced price. Yeah, they still get my money but I won't feel too bad about paying a low price for what I consider a subpar product. Kinda like buying day old bagels for half-price. That shit's still good eating. Also, did you miss the part where I said if they even get that much from me? If the game is seriously broken or just so poorly optimized that people with similar builds like mine have to turn down all kinds of settings to get it to run decently, then I'll pass.

What does this have to do with my post? Ubisoft still disagress with you.
If they thought that people who will upgrade to $500 GPU's for a few more FPS were a large group of people, they'd have put more effort into the port so those people get some more eye candy for their upgrade.

Except not? They just said they don't because if they're spending the money, why optimize? You should learn to read the OP.

Optimize != add extra eye candy. They are two different things.

Your assertion: Ubisoft wants gamers to upgrade for $500 cards and that's why they don't optimize.
My assertion: Ubisoft don't care about PC ports, including those buying $500 cards, otherwise they would have actually catered to those with $500 GPU's with unique features/effects other than just being able to run their game.
