Xbox One Hardware/UI Review Thread

I'm just pointing out how odd it is that the titles sound almost identical. "Future, Beyond gaming.."

I just read the consumer reports article and it wasn't even that positive, but the title is very sensationalist.

I was pretty disappointed that CR had a review because I thought they bought all their stuff retail and had nothing to do with PR from companies. Guess I was wrong.

I probably should have said data/storage management, but I had just woken up, so cut me some slack....

yeah I can't believe they don't have that. X360 you just open Storage and it brings up your hard drive, cloud saves, and any other drive attached.

Maybe it's because cloud is now unlimited and they don't support USB drives yet.

Then don't? It doesn't seem like the voice control is an all or nothing kind of thing. If it's more convenient to do something with a controller then do it. The voice control seems to be more useful when changing between a bunch of different things quickly when they aren't all in the same spot on the dash.

I don't think starting games with voice activation would be as convenient at all unless you wanted to start it up while you're up and moving around. But if they didn't give you the option to start games via voice control then people would be up in arms complaining about not having the option.

it's only going to make sense in certain situations. It wouldn't make sense if you booted up and the game was suspended. It WOULD make sense if you were watching TV and wanted to flip to a game that wasn't last played (or really any game since your focus screen would be on "TV").

Pretty positive reviews so far. Seems like the only things holding reviewers back from recommending it over the PS4 is the $100 price difference. The UI, while looking a lot like the 360 which got dog shit slow and cluttered, looks more worked out than the PS4 will probably ever be judging by everything else Sony does.

A huge component is kinda useless for those of us outside the USA (TV stuff) and I still don't think I would use kinect for browsing etc over my iPad, but I gotta admit the Xbone looks a bit more interesting than the PS4 (finally mine arrives tomorrow and I can actually see what I think of it)

So the PS4 fanboys(I know lots of you aren't) of this site who already have their consoles and are enjoying games on them still feel the need to call sites like polygon shirll sites because they gave the xbox one a .5 higher score than the PS4? My word, that's amazing. I wish I had that kind of ability. Ultimately, hardware reviews don't mean much. This generation is going to be a Marathon not a sprint, so get the console you enjoy and stop bashing each other. Were gamers at the core. These scores are acceptable. I hope nobody was expecting straight 8's or 9's on the systems right out of the gate. I hope my fellow PS4 gamers are having fun, I'm going to be gaming with you all on the 22nd when I get my Xbox One and will be getting a PS4 next year.

I would also like to add that reviewers are lowering their scores for this generation because if they gave everyone 9's right out the gate on games and hardware were would they have to go to improve them.(at least, that's my theory.)

I think the metro-esque UI works well for casual users. It blasts big pictures of the stuff people use most right in front of the screen. My sister always preferred navigating the MS OS over Sony's, and she was exposed to both at the same time.

Simply put, it makes some people comfortable when they see [NETFLIX] [HULU] [HBO] picture boxes right at the default welcome screen. On PS4 you have to do a few clicks to get to the menu which displays all the video streaming services.

What Sony should do is remove the Music and Video Unlimited windows and put the more mainstream video apps there, or at least let users be able to permanently pin them the main XMB.

Admirable of him to stick up for MS after they refused his request for protection in the face of death threats.

http://www.polygon.com/2013/8/15/46...rassment-erodes-industry-spurs-support-groups

"Nobody knew who was actually processing those complaints," he said. "Customers needed to know that there is someone who is in charge of making sure this gets better. What came along with that, unfortunately, was SWAT teams and threats and abuse."

One of the reasons Toulouse left, he said, was because Microsoft didn't know how to deal with that from a corporate standpoint .

"Microsoft didn't know what to do," he said. "I would bring it up. I would say, 'Hey, I am putting my family at material risk, by you wanting me to be this public sheriff.'"

Toulouse said he asked for security because people would tell him they were going to kill him at events like PAX.

"They were like, 'We don't do that,'" he said.

Funny seeing them displayed like this. There's also the 'future' part that most reviews used.

This reminds me of all those news reports using the exact same phrases throughout a bunch of channels. I think it was Conan O' Brien exposing this in a segment, can't remember.

Not saying there's any relevance, just what this reminded me of.

Maybe it's an incredibly common figure of speech that happens to describe their console's widely understood identity as a game machine + media center? I really don't believe these outlets are all copying from the same PR sheet, sorry.

GiantBomb guys were generally pleased with the Bone OS and voice stuff in particular. Are we saying the GB guys are bought off now? Man, this place is fucking bananas. Everyone needs to just go play some videogames.

Having worked on both newspapers and PR, they are copying from the PR sheet. I was stunned how many times my exact sentences, sometimes paragraphs or whole stories would appear -- attributed to the journalist - in an article I placed.

But you don't...like...understand conspiracies, man.

I think that Europeans won't find the console that appealing. The issues with voice might turn off some who don't speak the dominant language and the TV component is nonexistent for them. They were never that big on the brand either. The delay in some countries also hurts as Sony gets a Christmas season to itself. It is going to be a uphill battle for them there after launch. I expect it to be like the Wii U there where the initial sales are alright but then it stagnates. It is an American console meant for an American audience in their minds.

I think I would rather watch someone mess around with the UI than use it myself. It is just so messy and over complicated for my tastes. I mean I can't imagine using this system without Kinect to be a very pleasant experience.

I wonder if the lack of storage management is to keep people from noticing all the 'DLC' arrived on the disc, and the later 'DLC' purchase is just a few bytes to unlock it.

"This YouTuber says he's enjoying both systems but still thinks that he likes the Xbone/PS4 a bit more so I feel pretty confident that he indeed is bought by Microsoft/Sony. I know this because of experience. I mean just look at the graphics on the PS4/Xbone"

Enjoy the systems, guys.

That's pretty hilarious. Got to be some sort of press kit catch phrase or something.

I daresay - these are usually called "talking points" in politics.

I don't think Major Nelson mass-emailed the press their marching orders or anything; I would attribute it to something much more banal.

It does raise an interesting question w/r/t the Xbox one and NeoGAF though – when a huge amount of what makes the One interesting has to do with watching TV... where does that leave us? Specifically, here? GAF is a gaming forum (with an outsized OT, obviously) but when the "pitch" for the X1 wheels off into 'well it's really good at this live TV thing..." I'm sort of like... ok? I'm on NeoGAF? I'm not on AV Forum. Y'know?

Wait what? Do you have a link to that cast?

It was the one from today or yesterday. On multiple occasions they said that a lot of the UI/Kinect integration felt like technology from the future.

But since M$ is paying outlets to say stuff like that, take it with a grain of salt.

You could discuss the merits of games such as Killer Instinct, Dead Rising, Forza, Ryse, Crimson Dragon, Zoo Tycoon, Kinect Sports, etc. You know, the games that got released on the platform. Whether they be crappy, decent, or great, there are just as many gameplay experiences to discuss for the Bone as there are for the PS4.

Whatever the reason, they need to patch in manual storage management ASAP.

The final ass storm was MS bribing all of mainstream media? Holy shit, didn't see that coming...

3. 4K Resolution and 3D video
4K resolution means that video has 4,000 lines of horizontal resolution, compared to HDTV which has 720, and Blu-Ray, which has 1080 lines. The PS4 supports 4K resolution for videos and pictures, but has no plans to offer 4K games. The Xbox One, in theory, can have a 4K game on the day of release, although there are no known games that have 4K at this time. The 4K resolution is one more forward-thinking decision that Microsoft has made, and this high resolution might one day mean doing networking through avatars in lieu of going to conferences.

What the FUCK is this guy talking about? How do people even come up with shit like this?

Exactly. It's not like there's a lack of games to play. My PS4 has made a good Resogun (and Contrast, but that was done in a morning) machine so far, but the XBO has more exclusive games that I want to dive in to.

Howevever, the discussion on this platform goes ... (wait for it) ... Beyond Gaming as well. As a distinguishing factor, people are going to gravitate to that in articles and reviews.

I've noticed this a lot, a ton of articles will launch over a couple days displaying the exact same messaging. A few weeks ago there were a whole bunch of articles consistently using "upscaled to 1080p" and "the games are what matters" and other such motifs across a range of sites. And it seems to coincide with a whole bunch of new users coming on to NeoGAF expressing the same sentiments

I feel that they should have delayed it till end of next yr and gone for 20nm tech and ddr4 ram... Also fine tune the kinect maybe

This console is too ambitious for what's under the hood
