Xbox One Hardware/UI Review Thread

And there's the tea. Xbone's core features are half broken, and PS4 is a games machine with only one great game to play. Next gen doesn't start until Uncharted 4, Halo 5 and Zelda U hit, frankly.

I'm ok with Multiplatform games plus killzone and Reogun on PS4. I'd have bought lego, NFS and ACIV on PS3, so being able to play them in higher quality is worth doing. If I'm going to buy a console next year at the same price, why not buy it now and improve some of this winters games?

When it comes to voice command I think MS has to stop to make it sound like it's capable of anything close to natural speech at this moment.

Because it seems like it works best once you realize that you have to use very particular commands. If you're aware of that and keep using the wrong command, it becomes the equivalent of pressing the wrong button on your remote because you can't figure out what the icons mean.

MS has to do a much better job of teaching as long as their tech isn't advanced enough.

Maybe that should tell you something. Oh my, all these car reviews keep using the word "fast", is that a requirement?

its not that their tech is not advanced enough. Right now voice recognition works that way. I am using dragon speaking that I believe is more advanced than ms one and there still the same problems. You have to speak clearly and use the commands that recognizes. Don't talk to it like you talk to your friend.
dragon has a nice tutorial for all of that that ms should copy.
And dragon is improving when is listening you so I believe Kinect will do the same.

one thing that the last week has taught me is people will see what they want to see, both from a positive and negative point of view.

Truest words spoken. It's disappointing the amount of bickering and attempted one-up manship going on.

We should be celebrating the launch of the new consoles instead of trying to tell other people why they should or should not care about x features of either console. Biggest problem at the moment is people trying to justify their purchase to other people on this forum when really you don't need to justify yourself to anyone but yourself.

PS4 got great coverage last week, XB1 is getting great coverage this week, just enjoy the launch of new consoles! Perhaps PS4 doesn't have enough exclusives and perhaps XB1 feature list isn't as complete as it should be but they will improve over time.

There are so many minor to midlevel gripes to consider from what I have read through thus far

  • reports of Picture Degradation (maybe minimal) when using HDMI IN
  • Surround Sound issues from HDMI IN
  • reports of Noticeable lag from HDMI IN
  • No HDD management at all
  • No controller Battery power level
  • Reports of minute long boot times
  • Kinect still seems to be somewhat hit or miss for voice

Is anyone keeping track of these as I find it hard to keep up with this thread and all the reviews?

Clearly it's not done cooking. Looks like my decision to wait was the right one.

The whole "Redbox by Verizon" thing is ridiculous. I feel dirty just typing it out

So after reading some reviews it seem the X1 OS half baked just like PS4 but we all expected that .
What i do find funny is how out of touch the main stream press is when it comes to how a good amount of young people watch TV ( view content ) these days .
Either way still early and i look forward to see how it goes for both consoles

Im suprised nobody except giantbombcast seems to have complained that xbox autodeletes stuff from hard drive?

I believe it saves all the data to the cloud before it deletes anything and fetches it when you want to use or open whatever it was that was deleted. In any case, no one is going to be maxing out their console harddrive on day one, and it seems like an easy enough fix if it becomes a real problem.

Mainstream media perspective is extremely positive:

Xbox One review: This is the console of the future
- Fortune

Xbox One Is a Slice of the Future - Rolling Stone

The Xbox One is the closest thing to the future of television we’ve yet seen - Hollywood Reporter

Xbox One a great game player _ and more - AP

Xbox One review: The gaming device that goes far beyond gaming - Consumer Reports

Xbox One: A family-focused console that goes beyond gaming - Washington Post

Xbox One review: Compelling console with a strong lineup of games - NBC News

Some mainstream sites were really definitive in saying the Xbox One was definitely the best choice this holiday:

They all seemed to love Ryse and Forza the best.
Wow, great reviews. We'll see how that translates to sales but this is why you don't base a console's general success based off of NeoGAF.

Not really, just reality of voice recognition. Which is perplexing how anyone would think this is a good idea. 10-20% failure rates mean everyone will stop using it soon. This is justa gimmick.

Yea but the UI looks to be designed with voice controls in mind since navigating it with a controller is quite clunky (according to reviews), so if the voice commands suck what are you left with?

There are also numerous innaccuracies in these reviews, which is why you don't use mainstream press as a source of success either.

So Polygon gives it a .5 advantage over the PS4. Tha's pretty much how they rate first party Sony games and first party Microsoft games compared to the metacritic avarage of said first party games, with a .5 advantage to Microsoft.

hey_it's_that_dog said:

Sony:
Last of Us
GOWA
Sly
LBP Karting
R&C Full Frontal Assault
Starhawk

Polygon is 10.5 points lower than Metacritic on average.

MS:
Gears Judgment
Halo 4
Dance Central 3
Forza Horizon
Fable Journey

Polygon is 4.6 points lower than Metacritic on average.

Guess the sample size isn't all that, but it fits the theme... :)

Having said that, I don't know how their hardware reviews are compared to the internet avarage...

A big mess. I think they xbox UI and kinect were just misplaced hope that it would magically work somehow.

Voice control was never going to be as good as Microsoft were claiming it to be.

This might not have anything to do with Xbox in general, but they are pushing Voice so hard you think they would let you record your own voice at the initial setup for words like xbox. Or even let you record shortcuts for other commands, that could be unique to you.

Most people use consoles to play games.
Most games people play are multiplatform titles.

One would think that the fact that multiplatform titles look noticably better on the cheaper platform would be an important factor. Apparantly reviewers don't care.
To me, thats the biggest point that sets these two consoles apart.

I personally thought the voice recognition would be perfected with all we've been told. That's seriously underwhelming considering that's the primary differentiator aside from snap.

Any of these outlets reporting any faulty hardware? With PS4 it seemed to become obvious straight away to a couple of places.

Bottom line, whoever buys the XBox One will have a grand ol' time. Same goes for the PS4.

Why there is seemingly so much discomfort about this is beyond me.

I thought about this too.

I think it's such an obvious feature that I'm sure it has to be patched in at some point

Most of them are reviewing potential instead of the reality today, so sadly that word is needed.

I don't want to know what the potential is. I expect Microsoft to explain that to me. I want review sites to review a thing. What it is now. Not 'what ifs'. I can take that information plus information from what MS is promising in the future and extrapolate myself thanks.

Alternatively, the reviewers could use information MS has provided as facts and use that. But I don't want wishy-washy comments like 'oh I'm sure it'll be much better soon'. Really? Did kinect 1 get much better soon? We simply don't know that, and it isn't your job to sugarcoat stuff.

I'm bored by "not yet"s from kotaku. I think they probably feel they are doing the responsible and reasonable thing, but I could have told you the answer was not yet before they even reviewed it! Boring. Let's see some blood.

so what about game installations? Eurogamer mentioned 5+ minutes for NFS, and someone else mentioned COD at 19 minutes? They dont have any kind of fast install for XB1?
