Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Import Thread

How much is due to disinterest and how much is due to a declining market will never be known. However, potentially doing under 30% (assuming ~500,000 copies lifetime) of XIII in Japan alone is not just due to a declining market. There are many factors, and general disinterest is definitely playing a role.

It's safe to say that gamers worldwide are growing sick of Lightning and co.

By far I mean LR has 50% of XIII-2 Comgnet ranking when it was near launch.

And that's pretty bad, probably won't mean LR will have 50% of sales of 13-2, but it seriously transmits the sensation that the game will sold pretty poorly and 13-2 sales were already not very good.

LR has the chance of selling less than a Tales of game, I mean...that's pretty "WHOA".

Xilia 2 just did 500k a few months back. GTA5 surpassed all the other entries in terms of sales, there's still market for PS3 games. I think at this point we can assume that people aren't interested on the XIII saga. Specially after 2 lackluster entries.

My guess is around 300K first week - 50% less than 13-2's debut.

Using boss themes as battle themes is pretty dumb.
Yeah, that was weirding me out, too. Whenever I hear a previous boss theme, I usually look over and see regular enemy battles as opposed to an important battle or a battle that has a callback to a previous game.

I recall XIII-2 using XIII music in weird context too. Seems like just their way to fill the gaps. Maybe these decisions aren't made by the composers.

This is my guess as well. 300 to 350 k.

That usually happens with any third story / movie / game though so it's not surprising. At this point, SE is probably well aware of the potential of the title and they did spend quite a bit on advertising which leads me to believe they expect solid but not wowzer results. I am sure they will be happy with sale figures for the title. It's funny that the Lightning Saga will probably go down as the highest selling trilogy in SE's history.

Actually, I wonder how a FFX-3 would have done back in the day. Of course, any guesstimate would have to take into account the difference between PS2 and PS3 established bases.

I dunno. Some of the XIII music use in XIII-2 could be odd at times, but in many cases, they made sense (ex: Blinded by Light in AF700, etc). But for the most part, XIII-2 stuck to its repertoire and was more cohesive musically for it.

Here, it just seems like a lot of it was stirred in a pot and things were used based on their tone as opposed to meaning to fill the gaps as you said.

Mass Effect 3, Transformers 3, AC3, Uncharted 3, God of War 3 and MGS3 would all like to have a word with you.

Seems like the Japanese PSN digital version is unlocked and available for download/play.

The Asia version should be up soon.

Preeeeeeety sure no one said that in this particular thread, Toth.

Crimson, you know people will use ANYTHING at this point to put down anything FF related.

And psycho, I'll give you GW3 and MGS3 but the other ones have been quite divisive (let's not forget the whole ME3 ending that negated the entire SERIES for people).

Okay first: That must have been a really tough trailer to cut together. Holy crap that must have taken forever to make. So kudos to the video editor that had to cut all that.

Unfortunately Second: Its a really bad trailer. Like really, really bad. Music was so/so. A weird amount of focus shots on Lightnings chest.

Okay I take it back. Its not bad. Its off-putting and weird.

I think the cutting in that trailer in some parts was okay, like the character to character cuts.

But man, the FFXIII launch trailer was so danged good in comparison. It was the trailer that made me go, "well, fuck it, I'm going to import that game after all," after being so disinterested in it prior to its Japanese launch. The LR trailer in comparison does nothing for me.

Uhm.

Some of the reused music decisions within their contexts kind of don't make a lot of sense.

Yeah, it's so weird to see boss themes from the previous games playing while Leta mashes out a battle faster than the time it took to load said battle.

And now someone on the stream mentioned that they actually downgraded the difficulty on all modes late in development (for whatever that's worth, I'm taking that with a grain of salt).

Remember this one? That convinced me to get FFXIII. So their marketing can be briliant when they promote something completely new. But now that people have tasted FFXIII and XIII-2 these trailers will fall on deaf ears.

The Mega64 version was better.

Will post impressions later.

By the way, a question to people who have seen the live stream - are the slowdowns still there?
I've played the demo during this year's TGS and the field exploration was pretty bad.

What's the exact opposite of "music to my ears"?

A bit. I don't think there are as many drops as before. But again, it's a stream so there are bound to be hiccups and slowdowns in places where there probably isn't, so who knows how the actual product's like.

And I'm more envious that you got your copy of Mario already. Friday can't come soon enough.

Nails on a ch- Oh, oh damn Schala.

Well, on the bright side, Leta is playing on easy mode and no one has no idea if he's doing more side quests or main quests at this point.

On the bad side... well, the last boss he really had trouble with was a dragon from yesterday that he had no real business fighting (and he's been playing almost non-stop since then). And all that took was slight variations in his set-up to overcome. Plus, all of the enemies I have seen him fight since 9:00AM-ish were doing piss-poor damage to him and he mashes out attacks despite the buzzer sounds telling him that the attack is in the cooldown phase. It'll probably be like when he played XIII-2 (or I think it was Leta streaming XIII-2); easy main game, and then surprise stone-wall final boss out of nowhere.

I'm hoping someone can do a good stream of normal mode and see what that's all about, because I actually liked the difficulty in XIII.

they downgraded the difficulty? goddamnit. Why don't they just add difficulty options for everyone? Maybe one of the people who beats it on easy will get some confidence and beat all of them to become a real man.

This bit was golden.

So it isn't even a game and it is so bad he would kill himself because of it. Truly the last game he will ever play.

Ahem. I joke of course.

--------------------
For those that have had the chance to play it, is the gameplay any fun? Or is it on par with the story scenario?

They've really dropped the ball in there marketing in terms of trailer release imo. Just feels like nothing to get you excited for as compared to those nicely edited 5-7 minute trailers. Even XIII-2's Final Trailer was pretty great.

They toned down the 'hard mode' I think, after the initial run murdered everyone in the development team. Now, there's only Easy and Normal mode, and a nerfed Hard mode unlocked after 1st playthrough.

Yeah, that was Leta. Heck, his Tales streams were kind of like that too. Teak is the guy you want to see playing something decently. But Leta usually goes out his way to do a lot of stuff quickly despite getting stonewalled at a boss. But I can pretty much see most of the battle difficulties on easy simply ending with a quick customization tweak.

I can't say a lot about Normal because I didn't really watch the Teakdoc stream as much as I did the Leta stream since I was streaming and keeping an eye on/moderating a friend's stream, myself. I know for sure that Teakdoc did a lot of customization and schema tinkering which made his foray into enemy battles easier, and that somewhat makes me wonder if a lot of the depth being placed in ability customization/outfit customization as opposed to battle play outside of perfect timed guards. But in all honesty, I'd much rather play the game or play a demo of the game and make these assertions based on my own experience than watch someone play it.

I'm just disappointed neither of them checked the 'save' stream box in their Twitch settings. In fact, it's actually dumb that Twitch even decided that'd be a thing instead of just auto-archiving everything like it used to.

The Asian PSN is updated. Chinese/Korean version is up. There's also a digital version for the Japanese version that's slightly more expensive.

Thanks for the notice. At least I can start downloading it now.

6am and I want to go to bed, but still, good timing.

I thought someone mentioned you couldn't buy the JP language version on the HK PSN store, but I might be wrong. It's there for 418HKD, Chinese/Korean version is 338HKD.

Edit: I was well beaten, just really tired to not realise it was mentioned before, sorry lol
