Dual Shock 4 Light Bars - turn them off, please

Considering it reflects off my walls in the dark, I definitely noticed my wall turning orange and then red.

Ah, nothing around me is reflective and I don't play in the dark. I seriously had no idea it did that, though. Now I have to see what it looks like.

It bothers me as it seems like a waste of battery. I realize it's just a LED but it serves no purpose without the camera so why waste juice?

I think it looks nice but something is obviously draining the battery life and it would have to be that. There definitely needs to be an option to turn them off. The more options the better.

It's a really dumb and pointless "feature" -- I sit on the ground while playing personally (fairly close to the TV) and it reflects off my PS4 itself.

Regardless of whether you see the light on you TV screen or not isn't the point. It should be an option to have it on or off especially since most games that don't use the camera don't really use it any meaningful way.

I don't mind the light but I know battery life would be a lot better if they just made a toggle. I don't remember ever having to plug my dual shock 3 in after a single day of playing.

I'm more disappointed that I can't see what the light color is most of the time. I'm surprised that people are actually bothered by it.

I never even notice the light, for me its like it isn't even there.

Anyone who slaps tape on a $60 controller...well, do what ya like.

Tape is no solution at all. Who would do that?

There should totally be a system level option to turn it off but I haven't had any problems at all. I have a mega glossy LCD and noticed it exactly once. It's way less intrusive and much easier to avoid than the front facing light up buttons on the One pad and the Vita.

Maybe it's because I sit a decent distance from my TV but it just seems like a non-issue. Adjusting your earbud while holding a controller on the other hand. That's a different story. Blinded the hell out of myself for a few seconds there.

It does reflect off the TV for me, but NO WAY I'm putting any type of tape on my $60 controller. When I started KZ, I was like "WTF this is terrible" Then I just sorda forgot about it and never noticed it again.

One thing that is ALWAYS there to remind me that it exists, is the short battery life of the DS4. I think it has about 7-8 hrs of life on full charge. I immediately ran to the store and bought a 10ft USB cord that is now plugged into the wall behind me with my phone USB wall adapter. I find myself constantly reaching for that cord. Where as on the DS3 it would be DAYS before it ever saw a charge.

Am I the only one that hasn't noticed the light bar? A buddy of mine asked when/for what reason the light changes colors and I had no idea.

It definitely should be optional. I don't really care if you personally don't have an issue with it. I have a glossy plasma screen and it's def visible and occasionally annoying.

I'm always fascinated by the people in these threads arguing against an option.

"I'd like the option to turn this light off."

"DOESN'T BOTHER ME LOL!!!"

Right, but it clearly bothers other people, but when it's an option, you both win!

It's like in those tech support threads where people say, "Hey my XBox One makes a weird noise after an hour or so, anybody know what it is?" And then you get ten posts of "Mine's working fine." How do they possibly think that's helping?

If it saves battery life, I'd be for being able to turn it off. It doesn't bother me and I haven't noticed it reflecting off my television, but I can't think of anything else that would cause the controller's battery to drain so quickly. I don't know anything about engineering, so I might be wrong about that.

I like the cut of your jib sir. Yes it doesn't bother me but people have different setup's and I could see this becoming a issue. I wouldn't put tape on my controller if I did have the issue, so having an option to just turn the damn thing off would be nice. Maybe when you start up a game that needs it, it could turn on automatically or something.

I don't really notice mine, and when I do I think "cool, a blue light." Also my cats like them. Should be an option to disable, but even when they're just for show I doubt I would.

Come into a room and could easily identify which one was my controller from a distance.

yeah, it's really useful for every time i enter into some room and i have to identify which one is my controller.

...

sometimes i think my life isn't remotely as exciting as the rest of GAF's :|

I love the light bar, I think its great and my seating position is low enough so that I hold the controller below the my TV's level so that it can't reflect (not sure if it would anyway).

Could anybody take a picture of how it looks when playing in the dark and having the DS4 on with the light facing the TV ?

Super glossy screen here and it bothers me from time to time.
Would like the option.

I do have some Light Dims I can cut to size.

Dat blind loyalty

I agree this is terrible design. It's a huge light you can't even see unless it's reflecting or you look down.

No way they can make it optional at this point though, not without a complete redesign

1. I wish you could turn off the light.
2. I wish you could pick different colors.
3. I wish you could turn the controller off when watching a movie.

I have never noticed it while actively playing a game.

I was watching my roommate play a game and noticed it, but I liked what I saw.

So yeah, no big deal.

And to the people trying to say it's a battery drain, I believe it has been stated time and again that the LED light in the DS4 takes only about as much battery as the simple red LEDs on the DS3. I agree that the DS4's battery life is terrible in comparison to the DS3, but the light bar is not the reason.

People who imply that it's impacting battery life in any major way are hilarious.

It's a fucking LED, folks. The amount of power a LED uses is completely insignificant compared to maintaining a constant low latency 2.4GHz radio signal.

If the light bar were off, you would probably gain like 5 minutes from those 8 hours of continued use.

are you for real

some of you sound like you normally play in a sensory deprivation tank... does the red LED power light on your TV burn your retinas like the equatorial sun?

options are great and I support the ability to turn it off where appropriate, but you'll forgive me an eyeroll at some of these descriptions.

I generally sit with my feet up on the ottoman with the controller in my lap. Totally unrelated to the functionality of the controller, that's just how I sit. During Killzone when I take damage, my legs start turning red. It's kind of cool.

Nope, love mine.
People must live in some dark dank caves for the glow to be that glaringly horrible to you.
