"Definitive Edition" the new HD-Remastering of next-gen?

So Tomb Raider: TDE may actually start the new trend of re-releasing titles from this gen forward to the next era. However, I am most definitely miffed by the fact that:

A) This is selling at FULL price!
B) It may not even run at 60fps.

I'm not against it, especially if it could bring games like TLOU under the best possible circumstances.

However, don't you think you would question their priorities on resources? What exactly are they doing to warrant a full price on this game considering their previous "definitive" edition went on sale recently? What a stupid way to get us to overpay them for something I'm pretty sure took less than half their manpower to create just to have a "taste" of what the next-gen title is supposed to be. Is this some Early Access bullshit in the form of a finished game to fund their resources for the next?

Seriously,is that their standard? Re-mastering current-gen assets is now an example compared to whatever tech they would build from the ground up? Now that I think about it, I believe that GOWII HD does look very similar to GOW3..yeah...no.

What do you think? Will this play a pivotal role in next-gen if it does sell well. Would we expect games like B: Infinite or even GTAV to follow, and if so, is this something we WANT to fill in the gaps before the actual next-gen games are released?

I think full price is extremely silly if you look at the price of the pc version, which is probably better anyway. (No locked 30 fps, which TR will probably have on next gen)

They'll start selling it lower once they realize nobody's buying.
Right now they're just trying their chances at hitting when the library is not so hot.
Investment of time and resources in a port are incomparable to making a new game, usually there's some team doing the porting that doesn't work on the main game anyway, or it's an outsource.

Probably. We're definitely going to see more of this in the future.

Also, I would rather have 60 frames than 1080p.

I guess to Crystal Dynamics' credit, Tomb Raider is coming out in January where pretty much no other games for PS4 and Xbox One are set to come out.

PC is most definitely the definitive version though. Assuming you have a good enough computer to run it with all the bells and whistles.

It's coming.

I think it's fine for people who missed them but yeah full price is a little tough to bite.

Depends, if we get definitive versions of Grand Theft Auto V and Gran Turismo 6 as well as a few others I think I would be more than happy paying the full price.

I'm all for this, but they need to not price it like Tomb Raider. Somehow, they went from packaging at least two games for $40 last gen to one game for $60 this gen. Not cool.

Same game just up ressed with their shitty dlc added in. It's definitely not worth the $60 just for that.

They did more than just increase the resolution and throw in the DLC. As someone that didn't buy the game when it came out on PC/PS3 I'm considering buying this.

Another argument for going PC. You can just revisit older games, download the occasional gfx/shader/texture mod and have the "classic" run faster and better looking on an updated system.
Latest example was DOOM3 BFG edition. Looks better with certain custom mods than it does in the official money grab version.

There is never really any excitement about polished re-releases
They will be stressed to fetch more than $30 unless there is more than 1 game packed on the disc

dont have issues with it. especially if they are titles that were exclusive. lotta people would probably like to play uncharted or tlou if they were 360 only last gen.

no one is forcing you to double dip

It's why I won't buy multiplatform games on consoles. Backwards compatibility? I can grab a game from 1998 from my old PC games box and i'll be able to play it on my PC in 2013.

Can't say I like the price point but I am ok with sub 60fps as long as they are adding effects - which they clearly do on TR.

Okay stop, there's a lot of ifs there.
"Running it better" still puts it in the constraints of the settings allowed, unless there's mods.
And there aren't fanmods for every game, only for the more popular ones.
And even then the good mods are even rarer.
It's very case-to-case basis, especially nowadays.
And don't pretend like there's never compatibility issues with old Windows-based software, because there are, out the ass. It's why GOG existing is such a good thing.

Slap a 60 euro price on it and your done. Just port it over from PC to console (that's why the PC version has been at a low price every single time).

What's even funnier is that the PC version may just get a simple update instead. Or, are they ballsy enough to sell the same game separately? If not, this could be the first time in gaming history where the PC version loses out. Even with all the bells and whistles, Vanilla Raider would not incorporate the redefined physics, the new face model, etc etc.

I think this will be a trend with recent releases only. And TR is rather recent. This fills in gaps during the slow first year of a new console. For now it probably works, but later on we'll look back at all this as lousy cross-gen shit.

For 30 I would buy this but at full price i'm not so sure.

There are now only like, what, 4 million next-gen consoles out there?

In a best-case scenario, they'll only have several 100K units of sales - but my guess is below 100K. There's no real money to be made here.

This is for the fans. It's not a system seller.

So far, with the exception of Wii U, this generation seems so skippable if you have a gaming PC. (And I'm the guy who love my 360 to death and only love 2 games on Wii).

First post is factually wrong if the guy wasn't lying about increasing the polycount of everything, improving shaders, and adding more physics to the environment.
First poster only forgot to add it is the same game, in its PC version, with shitty DLC added, etc.

Seriously, selling a game again with increased polygon count, shader and blahblah is a joke. The sad part is that people will actually support this.

I'm really curious how many copies Tomb Raider on next gen needs to sell in order for Square Enix to deem it a success.

Bit early to say with next gen not even being out for a month bro :p

I'd argue that for every game actually worthy of being replayed there are definitely a number of custom fan mods out there. The fan dedication over years most often is leagues greater than the "let's throw something together with DLC and call it DEFINITE" corporate attention span.

Games like Vampire: BloodLines or Skyrim I would never ever be content with the official, locked (aka console) versions. Unofficial is better on all fronts. Fans sorted out all the little nagging issues over time.

And speaking of compatibility problems: I have not had that for literally decades. Yes you need to use dosbox for really old stuff, but hey, at least the option is there instead of waiting for your corporate overlord to re-release the game you love for more money-grabbing.

PC version doesn't have the upgrades I mentioned. Yet, at least.

SE did burn a ton of money making this game. So there's that.

Also...this isn't just a straight port of the PC Version.

Both Sony and Nintendo have great exclusives you won't see on PCs.

"Definitive" sounds pretty much like "please buy this new version, it will be the last one, no director's cut this time, we promise, please buy it"

There are quite a few PS3 games I'd love to see ported to the PS4, and the price doesn't bother me because these games are something for people who either missed them last gen or just want to play a superior version. All the whining about the price seems ridiculous to me. No one is forcing anyone to buy these games and it's not like developers owe you a cheaper version because you bought the game on another system. People buy things that get upgraded all the time, most people don't expect a discount because they own the old version.

I don't mind that they are doing this to fill in some release gaps, and wouldn't mind "remasters" for GT6, The Last of Us, and GTA5 since I haven't played those games yet.

I think a game that needs a Definite Edition is Metro Last Light. This game didn't sell much but got decent reviews, it supposed to look great on PC so the improvements would be great, it also came out last year so it's quite recent.
