Cliffy B says his next game will be a PC-only first person arena shooter

We need a middleground between both of these. Creating an HD remake of the same concepts that were perfected by UT4 and Q3 are the reasons that UT3 ended up as a dud.

Cliffy created a very original and well done shooter in Gears of War and I'm hoping he can do something similar with the arena genre.

UT3 ended up being a dud because Epic eschewed what made those games great in favor of what they thought would appeal to console players.

I didn't see many of the bad decisions they made with that game as being console focused so much as just being bad in general. The core game was still very UT, just worse than the others.

The entire game was console focused. The UI was obviously made for controllers. The server browser was pretty much terrible because most players were expected to use matchmaking. The gameplay was great but it was obvious that the development had focused on the PS3.

Yeah, I agree with this. There were a lot of things wrong with UT3, but the UI is the only thing I felt was really "consolized."

I just can't explain those terrible decisions any other way because I can't believe they looked at their product and said "yeah this is totally an improvement" instead of "this will appeal to different sector of gaming."

I mean ffs the cover had "from the guys that brought you Gears of War" despite them being one of the premier FPS devs of the last decade at the time. It was as if Epic didn't exist until Gears of War came out

CS go only overtook 1.6 when it got gun hats... and ONLY because it has those
No, people who hang on to 1.6 do it for a reason and it's not visual incentives. Valve started making adjustement based on Pro player's feedback, the Pros finally embraced CSGO and the rest of the community is following.

The hate for CS:GO by some people even with how many huge changes they have made and continue to make and the awesome showing it had a Dreamhack is crazy to me.

PC version of UT consolized ? Menus were a bit shit, but that was some pure UT good times (Closer to UT99, therefore better). Didn't they actually slow down the console versions to make them playable ?

Cliffyb shooter Unreal and gears of war.....

This better go multi!!!

But yeah I'm in!

Why? If it gets put on consoles, it'll have to get gimped to hell. I applaud his decision to make a PC-exclusive arena shooter, seeing as it'll be near impossible to play an actual arena shooter on a console without autoaim and all that bullshit.

I'm always skeptical of the qualitative argument for the death of arena games. There are worse games that still sold far, far better than UT3. UT2k4 was one of the best online shooters ever made, and it died off way before its time.

Maybe the problem is with the players and not the games. But I don't know how they can cater to bad gamers and not end up with a bad game.

TF2's money laundring hat madness can go fuck itself.

The only thing wrong with TF2's model is that it extends beyond hats into gameplay-affecting weapons. It should be more akin to CS:GO and Dota 2, where it's only cosmetics.

I still think UT3 was a much better game than most here on GAF give it credit for. attributing the loss of popularity of the genre to it seems a bit far-fetched.

Coming out in 2007 UT3 is not very relevant to what has gone on with the genre. At best it could be knocked for not reversing a trend that was already set in stone by then. A slow loss of popularity started when Counter Strike was in beta.

Quake 4 would be a better "blame game" as it released in a bad state and although it was eventually patched and modded into a great game the players were long gone because it was 1-2 years old when that happened.

Cliffy needs to get his spiritual father Rob Liefeld on concept art for this.

I want to gun down my enemies while sporting a three foot flat top, shoulder pads bigger than my head, 87 pouches, and giant guns that look like flashlights and have no discernible handles or triggers.

How successful was Nexuiz? It's a pretty classic arena shooter (albeit console targeted).

It failed pretty badly from what I could tell. And it's an oxymoron to be a 'classic' arena shooter when you're targeted at consoles.

The whole game felt uninspired, lacking content and poorly mimicking other games in the genre but reaching nowhere near the same heights or finesse.

should really update that OP, he actually said that the game he hopes wouldn't work well with the OR (due to it being too fast) and he had some reservations about kickstarter as well.

Why in the world are people complaining about an arena shooter coming out when there are other games that should be complained about first?? Isn't it refreshing that we'll get a brand new one with new tech?

I know some people may not classify Halo as an arena shooter, but it definitely was. It was more methodical in its approach and worked great for consoles, so hopefully 343 makes Halo 5 more like CE and less like 4 (which clearly took after the myriad of military shooters with custom loadouts and perks, etc.).

It definitely wasn't, you can't just say a game being more methodical automatically means it's an arena shooter. Arena shooters go at lightning speeds, which doesn't really work with a gamepad and on consoles.

I think, at this point, we should start putting Halo into its own sub-genre. Yes, it has elements of the arena shooter genre, but it also lacks a ton of the genre's defining elements, meaning it's not a 'true' arena shooter in the same vein as Quake/UT/etc.

Maybe console arena shooter? I don't know.

Bring something solid please Mr C... SinCity city level of badass

If graphic quality were to equal audio bitrate then PC is flac & Console is often low bitrate mp3.

Man, UT99 had me hooked for such a long time. Lava Giant, Face, Terra, Orbital, Mcschwartzly, Bollwerk, etc. Seeing something remotely like a successful boot-jump-shock-combo kill in this day and age would probably make me pee my pants a little bit.

Isn't he scared of the piracy and PC gaming being dead??

He made those comments in, what, 2008?

A lot has changed since then. F2P has emerged as a viable revenue stream (particularly in piracy heavy markets like Russia/Asia/etc.), and Steam has re-invigorated the PC market in a big way.

I'd say piracy was a much bigger issue in 2008 than it is today.

This. I seem to recall him talking a whole lot of smack about the PC as a platform for the last 7-8 years.

It's not like it's impossible for a person to have a change of heart about something like this.

UT99 was maybe the first real 3D or graphical game I ever played on a PC.

I mean, I had been a diehard Warcraft 2 fan on the old family HP, and put 100s on hours on it into Diablo 2, Elderscrolls Daggerfall, and Knights & Merchants. I even technically played a bit of Asheron's Call and Half Life, but that didn't work out so great on my cheap Voodoo card for whatever reason. I could play but the framerate was also bad. So, I saved enough as a young guy tree planting every summer though toward finally getting my own real gaming PC.

Spent almost $4000 on my first own gaming PC, almost a third of that on the nicest and one of the biggest Sony Trinitron CRTs I could find. Most of that year, I spent playing Anarchy Online and Dark Age of Camelot, but the first game I got was the original Unreal Tournament.

Never going to forget the first time I loaded into high-res max-FPS first person PC gaming.... As a kid who grew up on Squaresoft and Nintendo.. I never looked at video games the same again.

Needless to say, I'd support any serious attempt at classic arena FPS. Even if I never played it and just out of mere support for the game type and what it meant to me.

There always needs to be some kind of dick waving pedantry whenever it's brought up, but it's easily suited for one on one duels, players start off equally, there's map control in the form of health, weapon and power-up pickups. It's... an arena, and it serves no one to split hairs just because you don't like it. It holds onto the basic core ruleset of what they are.

There's no need to create extra BS genre names. It was an arena shooter. A shitty one. Don't get so caught up in semantics.
Basically.

I distinctly recall Mileena having a rather annoying habit of entering Valve-related threads circa the game's launch to make drive-by posts about how bad it was and at one point also made this retrospectively humorous prognostication:

In this case they didn't please anyone. I doubt GO will even be in the top 10 a month from now.

If its UT4 I with modding tools I will be happy as fuck.

Just don't remake old maps again and again just for a newer game in the series please. I have played enough of facing worlds and morpheus. Both excellent maps but lets leave them in the past where the belong with our fond memories.

Personally I would like to see new movement mechanics and weapons that gives rise to new gameplay and maps that go around that new gameplay.

Also Steam has got me buying a lot of games I wouldn't have when I was younger. Primarily because I get paid now when I didn't when I was a kid and have no issue paying for awesome games. Crowd funded a lot of games too.

Steam turned all of that around.

I know I'm essentially looking a gift horse in the mouth but I'm skeptical of a person who is very fickle about what he says. One moment it's PC is dying and consoles are the future and one moment is that consoles are suffering and that the PC is the future.

This is not to say this is a bad thing, I really loved UT99 even though I played it when it was on the decline in popularity. But I guess I just don't really trust CliffyB all round.
