I smiled at the Tearaway nomination. As for the winner, I haven't played it. Regardless I know for a fact that when I do get around to playing it I won't enjoy it more than GTA V, which is hands down my game of the generation. Plus I'm not a huge fan of Zelda on the whole. OOT and TP are the only ones I've particularly liked. But LBW is supposed to be a really good game so I'm not going to complain. I was actually expecting Mario 3D World to take it.

Good for handhelds, a step toward equality of treatment, i haven't played zelda(i don't have a 3ds) but imo a game like Tearaway would have been a better choice because it's a new ip and it's innovative both visually and gameplay-wise, other than being an awesome game.
Avatar quote incoming?

Don't judge if you have not play the one that win.

Is THIS a joke post???

what's wrong with a handheld game getting GotY? (I really don't know if you're joking or not lol)

No, really I'm not joking (everyone else, please stop asking that).

I'm not saying ALBW is a bad game. In fact, it might even be a great game. But the fact of the matter is that, at the end of the day, it's still a handheld game. Just like no matter how big an ant gets, it's still an ant (barring genetic engineering, obviously).

Tearaway being a new IP doesn't automatically make it better. Same for innovation.

Even their editor lists are surprising. But yeah, it seems they were really down with their GOTY pick. Shame I won't be able to play it though.

That's an awful way of looking at it but you know this.

It doesn't fucking matter if the game is on a watch, greatness should transcend the medium.

Handheld games can be as good as console games, unless all you care about is graphics.

GTA V traded basic functionality for non-menu based cinematic presentation and sprawling world size. It messed up in some small ways and a couple big ways.

ALBW is the complete antithesis of that.

3D's a big part of the game.

Ew.

But I'm sure this is an exagerration just like when people claimed the 3D mattered in 3D Land. It enhanced nothing and to be honest it just made 3D Land worse since it was easier to miss jumps with the 3D effect on because of how distracting the effect is and the fact that if you move your head or the system slightly everything goes blurry. When I play LBW I will play with the 3D effect off. I will miss nothing.

Hmm... I didn't (and still don't) think anything would impress me more than TLoU (Having played GTA5 & Infinite), but this (ALBW) is coming in the mail tomorrow so hopefully I'm wrong!

Gamespot finally showing some balls, this was the last site I was expecting to choose a handheld (Nintendo) game as GOTY, well done. As for the comments on YouTube, no comment.

What a dumb decision. At least try it first before judging for fucks sake.

And even more on PC!

So this is a pretty silly reason for not playing it.
If Nintendo didn't consider this good enough to invest money for a Wii U release, then I don't consider this good enough to invest time in a 3DS release.

I consider Luigi's Mansion 2 to be a waste of ideas because it wasn't a console game once again. If the rumours from a few months ago are true, I'll give the game another chance on Wii U.

Well, this pushed me over the edge somehow.

I've just ordered a 3DSxl with LBW and LBW is the only game I want to play on the entire system.

I feel ashamed, but fuck it, in a hundred years, who's gonna care?

You're in the minority there, 3D Land is playable without 3D but definitely enhanced with it on.

You definitely will miss something in a game designed around 3D.

Your complaints have nothing to do with the effect used in the game but rather the unideal nature of the hardware.

Yes, it's a pain at times but these two games seem superior playing with the 3D on if you can hold it steady enough.

Most other 3DS games, it just is a neat result and doesn't change much.

You're entitled to your opinion and everything but I just want to say that I'm REALLY glad I don't share that view with you. Would've missed out on a lot of my favorite games if I had this mindset.

Is GTA V this year's Uncharted 3?

Really?

Hey now, GTA5 is actually good!

Well, this pushed me over the edge somehow.

Hope you enjoy it/check out more stuff, the system is building a really solid library.

How is that possible now that the 2DS exists?

I hope it isn't designed with 3D in mind because I can't hold the sweet spot for shit on my XL.

Everyone's pretending they didn't like GTA V again. Just like GTA IV.
Not everyone, it's featuring prominently in the GAF GotY thread. I have to wonder if many of the vocal opponents have actually played it as I don't see many specific criticisms levelled at it.

Do you play 3DS games while taking a ride on a car with square tires? I mean, one doesn't even have to think about holding the "sweet spot" for this thing.

i agree with the choice but im surprised indeed as its a handheld game.

such a great game.

WiiU Zelda won't probably be in the same vein, but a 3DLand->3DWorld situation with this game would be much welcome (HD, MP, new items/ennemies/environments and something with the second screen akin to turning on/off the 3D in addition to items selection)

The importance of 3D in ALBW is really overstated imo. It's just a nice effect but it doesn't really add anything substantial. I preferred the 3D effects in 3D Land, Luigi's Mansion, Ocarina of Time etc.

Luckily Nintendo doesn't think in such an ass-backwards way.

Let me ask you guys this: have you ever seen a handheld game win GotY in the past?

I haven't played A Link Between Worlds, just going by what I have seen and have read from the developers.

It's not going to be a shit game if you play in 2D in all likelihood but if you want the best out of the experience and the developers' vision, it seems one of the few 3DS games that you really should play with the 3D on.

Someone here could shed more light on it as to whether this is really the case or not, far better than I.

It is a hassle for me to not have shimmering while playing. Seems eye dependant more than anything else.

The 3D effect was fine on my OG 3DS, but not with the XL. The range of movement available before it ghosts / blurs is miniscule for me. It's lovely (though irrelevant) that you don't find it an issue.

That's a shame. I used to love the 3D effect on my OG machine. Still, I'm sure the game will still be a cracker, even in 2D.

That's a relief. Cheers.

Impressed with Gamespot, and while an "unconventional" choice, it's also an appropriate one. The game is amazing, and one of the best games in one of the best series ever.

If it was truly designed around 3D then you wouldn't be able to play with 3D off at all. 3D World has far more complex level design and platforming than 3D Land and absolutely nothing was lost without the 3D effect. It's a visual effect. It doesn't help the actual gameplay in the slightest.
