Heh, I have quite a few fun stories from the last few days of playing.

On the first server we were playing on, some guy was stalking us with the Jaws theme playing on his microphone. Once he caught up to us, the melee started and the Benny Hill theme starting blaring. He beat us to death with a rock. ;_;

Yesterday, 4 of us went gathering for materials. A group of 6 armed guys spotted us and started chasing us. We booked it back to our base and holed up inside. Now, we had built a bit of a sniper tower out of our base so that we could shoot any enemies that tried to attack. This backfired, as they conspired to build a ramp up to our sniper nest! They laid siege for about 10 minutes until their ramp was high enough to reach our sniper nest, and they swarmed the place! Thankfully, we had enough help in the camp to eventually take our base over again, and we ended with some pretty good gear from the invaders' corpses.

Today, I stumbled upon a community where they had built a church. The guy invited two of us inside as he proclaimed to be from the church of Based God. He asked us to take off our pants and shoes. He proceeded to say a few prayers. He had each of us stand at the altar and look up to the sky as he "baptised" us (he swung at our naked sacks with his axe). And thus, we were reborn, servants of Based God.

Man, the stories about this are making me want to check it out. I would have laughed so hard when the Benny Hill theme started.

Man, it was such a good introduction to the game. I was laughing my ass off the whole time.

There's just nothing out there that can match the experience that this type of game provides (whether it be Rust or DayZ). If you can get some friends, or can manage to brave it alone, with enough patience you'll be playing a game more rewarding and more immersive than any other.

Now, the game is in alpha, and it's not perfect. Doors can only be opened by the person who built them. Buildings can never be destroyed...only doors. As a result, building community buildings is a bit of a hassle, and there can be griefing if someone decides to deface your building by placing their own structure near yours, place their own door on your building, or worse, build a barricade around it. It's a good idea to find a server that discourages this kind of behavior.

What time is it?
It's much less solitary than DayZ though. I could spend hours in that game and never see another player unless I went to a city. I hope we can see some heat maps for kills. This week I'm going to work on securing an air drop with two other people.

How large is the world? Is it interesting to explore? That's the main draw of these games for me. And yeah, DayZ seems a little barren with the lack of Zombies and player count. It can lull you to sleep at times which is dangerous.

The portion of the map near the road has a bit going for it...regular resource node spawns and a few towns/zombie spawn locations. The other areas are a bit barren at this point (especially past the Everust mountains). The world isn't enormous, but it's certainly big enough to support a few hundred regular players without a problem. It probably takes about 10-15 minutes to traverse the map in either direction...it's not as big as DayZ's world, but I'd say the size is just about right.

I really have no clue. It's big but not too big. On a full 128 player server though it's rare you'll go without seeing some body in half an hour of roaming.

Some land mark tips:
From what I've heard the road goes in a circle. And that there are two rad towns which are hot spots for killings.

Use the map. Knowing how to identify each blue area (the pre-existing "towns") will help you locate yourself quickly enough. Also, pro-tip: the ocean is south, and the north is defined by a large mountain range in the distance...very helpful in setting your bearings.

I didn't want to focus too much on the map because the exploration aspect is the big draw for me. But I appreciate the north south tip. A compass might be a nice addition given that the stars are not navigable.

As soon as people start orienteering and charting resources, it could become a real estate simulator. I've mostly been looting the roads, you get to see a good amount of drama from hanging out in the bushes at the side of the road. I'm planning on firing some arrows into groups of people to cause a panic, hoping they all kill each other.

So last night, we had enough gear crafted and found another player who joined our squad. Remember my post about the group who killed us while we were sleeping and took our stuff? It was time for revenge. We startet scouting their base. They had build a decent tower and a lot of large spikes. But one of us found a spot between their spikes to get through because they didnt connect them properly. Two of us gunned down the people who scouted the area from the tower, 2 others managed to get into the base. As soon as they had a respawn cooldown we started to hatched down their doors and finaly got in. It was so worth it. 1,5k metal fragments, 10 pistols, 10 blueprints, 1k wood and so on.
After we looted everything we build a metal door in their entrance so they could not get back in easily.
Thats whats you get for murdering us in our sleep. At least we gave them a fair chance to fight.

This game is great. GREAT. HOLY SHIT

So many of these survival type games.

Already picked up Day Z, and Nether. Unsure about this. Maybe if it is featured in the Steam sale I'll grab it like I did with Nether.

Don' have Nether, but I can say that I've had more fun in the 5 hours I played in Rust than I've had in the 20+hours I've played in the DayZ SA. I should have picked Rust up earlier, I just thought I'd spend more time with DayZ, but I needed to step away to let that game cook in the oven a lot more. Rust really is fantastic though, much much better than I was expecting. Having player created housing and forts/cities is a great idea. And the fact that they stay there means that every server can be different with just the base foundation of what the devs have there as a template. Some of the buildings I've come across are insanely huge and intricate, labyrinths and traps and secret doors and shit. It's very refreshing.

So that's where OG GAFz is? Now I need to buy and join the fun...

I'm serious, I need a posse to roll with. Goin' Derulo and trying to ride solo is nigh impossible. Who will accept me with open arms?

Man, I'm super interested in this game now. I just don't know if I can invest the time into it it seems to require.

I think initially it can be a bit of a learning curve. I've never played Minecraft or any games like it. In about an hour with this game though, I had all the basics down and am discovering new things. People should jump into the mumble MickeyKnox posted. Voice helps. Even if you have no mic, you could at least listen.

I just picked this up last night and played for about 30 minutes dying like 3 times.

Are there any beginner start guides? Seems like you need to build yourself a fire and little hut first as I ran into nothing but those.

It's always hard to manage the beginning without some friends. But start to collect wood and hunt down pigs. After you got some meat and wood. Build a campfire and cook your meat. Than you should start collecting wood for your first hut, and try to get enough cloth to build a sleepingbag. As soon as you get the sleepingbag down in your hut, it'll get much more comfortable because you'll respawn at it everytime you die (i guess it has a 5min cooldown). Now get yourself enough resources for a stone hatchet.
Next thing to do is to build a bow and some arrows. This will make the hunting alot easier and you can approach bears and the other animals. From there on, you are free to do what ever you want.

It's also the price and the fact that I have no friends who would play it with me.

My first 30 minutes in Rust consisted of me trying to ask a guy for help and shelter after I joined the server during nightfall and him running away into his shack. I found a structural integrity flaw in his shack that gave me a good view of half of the shack, where he stood staring at the door with a hatchet in hand, ready to fuck anyone who tried to open the door up. I stood there, quiet as a mouse for 10-15 minutes, waiting for him to go back outside so I could rummage through his stuff and maybe get the jump on him to claim the shelter as my own, which would have worked had I been able to see the other half of the shack which was occupied by a second player crouched in the corner with a pickaxe who shouted "NOT TODAY BITCH, HE'S OVER HERE!" which scared the living shit out of me. I escaped that situation without a scratch but it was probably the greatest opening 30 minutes of a game I've ever played.

Hilarious.

those 2 videos were distilled brilliance.

This game has been a top seller on Steam since it's alpha launched and hits around 13k concurrent players daily. Anyone play it? I searched for a topic but couldn't find one. I personally can't stand the gameplay in Day Z but I have been looking for something along the lines of it. A lot of the let's play videos make this game look pretty fun. Any impressions?

Warning: Penis

Damn, those dicks are tiny. I hope they're growers.

This thing is already producing the kinds of emergent, player-driven individual stories you'd only hear in Minecraft or DayZ. Saw PyrionFlax play it on stream and it looked like a hoot.

I feel these MP survival sandboxes are half games and half behavioural/psychology experiments. :lol

A group of players on my server have created a walled settlement called The City that has been destroying and pillaging any other group of players that decides to create a settlement that could potentially rival theirs. I've done a fair bit of wandering and have come across two to three equally sized settlements that are completely devoid of any players or items. While trying to find any salvagables from one of them, I heard a large group of players running towards it and was greeted with orders to stand down and exit the building slowly. Five dudes fully decked out in matching armour and weapons asked me if I was the one who sniped their guards at their watch towers and if they had any information about any settlements that were starting up. I told them I was just starting out and didn't know anything and they spared me, leaving me with a request to report any new settlements to any affiliates of The City.

After spending 30-45 minutes trying to meet up with some friends I convinced to pick up the game, we decided to wander around and start gathering materials for shelter and food to survive the night. We eventually came across The City and as we approached the walls, we heard a voice ask "I'm assuming you guys are here to offer us bolt actions as an apology". I said no and that their fortress was cool which prompted them to send out a guy equipped with SWAT gear and a shotgun to chase us away. Knowing that he was probably going to kill us anyways, I shouted "FUCK YOU, YOU CAN'T KILL ME! YOU AIM AT THE KING YOU BEST NOT MISS!". Famous last words. The watchtower guard picked off one friend and the other one got away. The SWAT guy caught a glimpse of my name when he killed me so now I'm on The City's shit list and they've got orders to shoot on sight. Might have to switch to a different server now due to almost everyone being affiliated with them.

I love this game.

Got to love how psychotic people get in games like this.

Damn. Now I regret not getting this while it was on sale since I think DayZ SA is a little too early for me to really invest time into it. I've wanted a good survival game that focuses on construction for quite some time now.

Hopefully it goes on sale again or I manage to sell some shit on Steam. Only had money for one of them and I think DayZ is too early to live to the hype considering all the DayZ mods from ArmA 2 added so much to the formula.

This, the rest of the stories, and the "CHINESE ASSHOLES" video has completely sold me on this. I should get this game when I get home from my parents in a week or so. Hopefully I'll have people to play with, I don't really have that many PC friends. Maybe I'll hop onto GAF mumble.

Is there a roadmap of some sort for where they want to go with this game in the future? I'm curious about what is going to be implemented.

This game is amazing and the social dynamics are hilarious. I love how offended some people get when you kill them for their stuff. A guy had a sweet gun and a bunch of food so I snuck into his base and smashed him and took all his stuff and left. He then proceeded to threaten me over proximity voice chat and then started typing in the all chat about how EVERYONE WHO PLAYS THIS GAME IS A CRETIN and I WAS TRYING TO BUILD SOMETHING AND YOU FUCKING KILLED ME and IF PEOPLE WORK TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE SOMETHING GREAT. Then he tried to add me on Steam to berate me more. This is the most entertainment I've gotten out of a multiplayer game all year.

his boots are real nice too

I haven't bought any of the multiplayer survival games so far but I have to admit this looks fantastic. How is it for solo players?
