I'm gonna go and guess that Lucario, Pokemon Trainer, and Jigglypuff are returning. PT will have the same 3 Pokemon with him. Along with Pikachu, that is all for the Pokemon reps. Everything else will be related to Pokeball status.
Yep, I think Mewtwo will be an assist trophy.
The only character I'm 100% sure about is Dixie Kong (as in I have no doubt she is going to be in Smash). Every other character had/has a lingering doubt in my head or didn't think about at all (Wii Fit Trainer and Villager).
Fake though it may be, I really love that character select screen. The white background and liberal use of bright, vivid colors are fantastic. I'd love to see the official CSS be something close to that.
I always preferred Brawl's bright interface and CSS over Melee's dark colors. I hope Smash 4 follows suit.

As far as pokemon go I just want Mewtwo back. Any pokemon beyond that I don't care.
Also I wanted to ask if anyone feels there are any "sure thing" unannounced new comers? So far we've gotten Villager, Megaman, Wii Fit Trainer, and Rosalina. I didn't expect any of them to be playable and I surely wouldn't have called any of them a sure thing. I'm honestly not positive on anyone, but if I had to guess I feel Mewtwo returning, Little Mac joining, and a second Kid Icarus rep (likely Palutena) are the closest characters I feel safe saying will be playable. What does everyone else think?
If anything, the boxing ring makes me think that he has less of a chance. Why would they put in a generic ring and a Punch-out ring? (I'm not buying the argument that it's secretly a punch-out stage. Every single franchise stage in the games has extreme amounts of personality and is immediately obvious where it's from).
I hope nobody from Xenoblade gets in. All the characters were annoying and the atrocious techno-islander character design thing they had going on would clash horribly. plzdonthurtmegaf.

I'm holding onto the hope that they took a Punch-Out ring and decided to spice it up or make a "Smash Universe" circuit ring. There is a bit of precedence for that sort of thing with the Pokemon Stadium stages I guess.
I could also see it just being a generic stage. At least PO music has got to be guaranteed either way.

Sakurai gave us plenty of reason to doubt Villager and Megaman hasn't exactly been a lively character these last couple of years. They may have been highly wanted characters but we had almost no reason to actually expect them beyond blind hope.
I'm actually in this same boat as well. Kid Icarus is now a more established franchise than "Ice Climbers" so Palutena is definitely a well deserved spot.
Well I just try to think of reasons why I wouldn't expect her, and I come with nothing lol.
She's going to be playable in a total of 3 DKC games, which is the 3rd most behind DK and Diddy (who will have 4 playable appearances in DKC games once DKCTF releases).
She can use her hair for attacks which is unique.
She was planned for Brawl, although as a tag character for Diddy, but I think she can hold up on her own as a stand-alone character.
And it seems DK is now a part of the big 5. Mario, Link, Kirby, and Pikachu were the big 4 in previous Smash games, but if you look at the trailer, it seems DK's status has been elevated.
Has there been any talk of controller support for this? I bought a Classic Controller Pro today for Wii VC games on my Wii U, and I'd love it if it worked for this. It works for 3D World so I have hope.
I think that the safest predictions right now are Takamaru and Palutena. Everything else I really have no idea. Another DK rep makes sense, but I could see them sticking with just two also.

I'm 99.9% sure this will have CCPro support, based solely on the fact that Nintendo still recognizes the controller (as seen with its usability in 3D World) and Sakurai loves to put every controller option imaginable in his games if Brawl is anything to go by.
It needs to be in so I can use the GameCube controller adapter!

My only guess is because he was featured in NintendoLand and got an updated look years back in Samurai Warriors.
I think he is likely as a character, but I don't think he is exactly a safe pick, and there are probably safer newcomers (Like Palutena, or FE:A character)
I added Dixie Kong and rearranged everything to match my original layout -- the "core four" are in the center, and the third-parties are in the corners. Since each new Smash Bros. game has a radically different character layout, I figured my previous design was too similar to Melee with the series arranged horizontally.

I'm positive that there is a photo floating around of Sakurai playing/testing Smash 'for' with 2 Wii U Pro controllers at once (also Brawl let you use just about any controller you could connect to a Wii/Wii U).

Also, a little warning for those planning on getting one of the MayFlash GameCube to Wii Classic Controller adapters.
Wireless GameCube controllers have a fairly noticeable (at least a couple seconds per input) lag when used with the adapter. Wired controllers seem to be fine though from when I played with Smash 64 & Brawl on my Wii U
, and Melee through the Devolution homebrew app
.
Although I mentioned this previously in this thread, I believe it bears repeating.
EDIT: Found that image of Sakurai using 2 Wii U Pro Controllers.
And I figured that I should mention that the using the start button with the adapter is kind of strange. Actually the HOME, SELECT(-), and START(+) button are all mapped to the GameCube controller's START button,
i.e. holding the button down for <1 secoind is the same as pressing SELECT (-) on a Classic Controller, while holding the START button down for > than a second is the same as pressing HOME, then (of course) double tapping the START button is the same as pressing START(+) on a Classic Controller.
Recent game appearances, strong Japanese following, FDS launch game... nintendo thought enough of the franchise to include it in nintendoland along with Zelda, Pikmin, Metroid, Mario, Luigi, Animal Crossing, Yoshi, G&W, DK, FZero, and Balloon Fight.
Sakurai has also commented that he is a potential character when working on past games. Then there's the fact that he loves to bring back retro characters (Ice Climbers, G&W, ROB, Pit).
I'm gonna be pretty bummed if we don't get Mewtwo, Palutena, and Little Mac. I've pretty much given up on Ridley getting in after that Pyrosphere tease.

I'm pretty sure that they are not safest predictions since we really have hard time to read Sakurai's mind. He can be very humble when it come to his work. It took three games to get all three Kirby characters in the game.
I would love to have Takamaru and Palutena, but I'm concerned about their inclusion.
Gonna be really upset if I don't see Chibi Robo make it. I'm not really expecting him to be in anyways but still
Can't really think of any other characters I'm that passionate about. I'd love to see K. Rool but that ship has sailed (I'm fine if Dixie is the third DK rep). Anna would be fantastic but I don't really know how I feel about her chances. Waluigi would be nice but not necessary. I'd take anyone from WarioWare for a second rep, or Captain Syrup, though I don't think we'll see that series expand beyond Wario tbh.
