Phew, well at least one of the things I tweaked yesterday worked to drastically improve my Note 2's battery life. After the update to 4.3, I'd be down to 60-70% by now, with my phone mostly on standby and down to 20-30% by the end of the day.

Now I'm still at 96% with it being unplugged since I got up this morning, listening to 30 min of podcasts, and being on standby the rest of the day. Back to where I was before the update, or maybe even higher but I'll need more time to see if that's the case.

Wait, this is a real thing? LIke going to be released real? I thought Microsfot buying Nokia killed off any android plans they had

Microsoft can't do shit until the sale is finalized. A lot of people at Nokia aren't happy about selling off the Mobile devices division to Microsoft, so it shouldn't surprise anyone if they go ahead & release the Android phone.

I got my G2 last night and I love it. The only issues I have with it are minor nitpicks. I don't like the back buttons too much. Not because its different, but because I usually have my phone in my back pocket and I do a lot of moving at work. I feel like I'm going to be butt-dialing with this phone.

The other is the auto brightness seems to be a little over sensitive. If I type, it gets really dark. But, if I move it slightly it gets brighter.

So I bought a new laptop with a touch screen, and tried Android-x86 on it. It is pretty much the best thing ever. Benchmarks like Epic Citadel and games like Riptide GP 2 run buttery smooth, constant 60 fps, even on the highest settings.

Are there any other good, high-spec games I should try? (Assuming they have an x86 version, if not I can try libhoudini.) If I find something fun, I might prefer playing the game on the laptop over my S III or Nexus 10...

(I also tried Android-IA which was actually a bit better, but the live USB is buggy when it came to downloading and saving files.)

Which version of x86 were you running? To this day they honeycomb x86 has been the smoothest I've seen android.

I tried the latest version, a "test build" based on Jellybean 4.3. I'm running it on a Core i5-3337.

It is funny that you said that about its smoothness, because I felt the exact same way when I tried using either Gingerbread or Honeycomb on my old Atom netbook years ago. I guess it shouldn't have come as a surprise that my i5 would run it even smoother.

I've had mine for a couple months and have only recently gotten used to the back buttons. The auto brightness is indeed a bit sensitive, but it doesn't bother me very often. I love that putting it at the lowest brightness is actually dim enough that it doesn't blind me in a dark room.

So I switched from AT&T to T-Mobile today, with T-Mobile doing all their deals. I already had an unlocked Nexus 5, so getting a new phone wasn't a huge deal, but I decided to get a Note 3 for the big screen and micro SD card support.

Yeesh.

I have had far more problems with my Note 3 in the 8 hours since I got it than I had in nearly 3 months of owning a Nexus 5. Reboot loops, freezes, several apps that I use on my Nexus 5 that (for some reason) don't work on the Note 3.

My first Samsung phone, and I can already understand some people's aversion towards them. I love the screen, but the wiz and the BILLION unnecessary Samsung (and T-Mobile) apps...ugh.

I'm kind of tempted to return it and get something else, restocking fee be damned.

Did you leave ATT in the middle of a contract? Did you get the $350 (or whatever it is they're offering) and ETF covered? Smooth transition?

Yeah, my AT&T contract wasn't up till December.

For the ETF, you're supposed to pay it first, then fill out a form online so T-Mobile can send you a Visa gift card for the amount you paid.

Since AT&T hasn't billed me for it, I haven't done it yet.

What? You must have a faulty phone. Mine has never seen a crash or glitch in my past 8 weeks of use.

Zero app issues, no reboots, nothing.

I know this is a model behind each, but I have a Nexus 4 and recent got a Note 2 to try out, for screen and mirco sd card slot... It just made me appreciate my N4 that much more, the software, superior screen in terms of colours and sharpness, build.

If I had choice between N5 and Note 3 I would easily go for N5 right away..

I hate my S3. The battery life is terrible and I've done everything I can to help conserve -- low brightness, turn off syncing, turn off location services, reduce animations, turn off vibrate, turn off LTE and stick with 3G... I don't know what else to do besides toss it and get a new phone but that's not possible right now finances wise, I have other things that take priority. Any other advice besides get a new phone that might help? I'm desperate lol.

Maybe it's just your battery wearing out? How old is the phone?

Same here, zero issues.

Also, I came from the GS3 to the Note 3 so I was already used to all the TouchWiz stuff... it's annoying though, for sure.

Not sure what's going on there. Is that really tall screens you scroll through? And combo shortcuts and widgets? Not sure I like it in general, seems both cluttered and also wasteful of space.

And suddenly I don't feel like we've missed too much by not having Nokia in the OHA. Looks horrible.

I have said in the past on GAF that they would likely put a terrible skin over it but people still dreamed of Lumia hardware with stock software.

Plus by forking it you're stuck with the God awful Ovi Store or whatever they call it now and whatever they can get to come to it. I guess you could side load apps.

A bit of odd behaviour from my (non-rooted) S3 that I'm finding a little worrying:

Last night I picked up my phone to set the alarms before going to bed and I found something unusual had happened - it seemed to have, without being prompted (on my part, at least!), mostly reset everything - the home screen was blank, with a few widgets present but unconfigured, and no icons beyond the most default ones present. However, if I went into my app archive, they do still appear to exist. Dragging (say) Sleep As Android out seemed fully-functional, and had my preset alarms present (but switched off?), but the archives seemed to have been emptied. Podcast Addict had lost its subscriptions. Most worryingly of all, I can't enter Settings; it gives an "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped" whenever I try.

SD card contents appear to be intact, the gallery's still populated with content, but I'm not sure if that's consistent - I thought the podcasts from PA were also on the SD, but they seem missing.

The most notable thing I did the day before which was unusual is that I turned on developer mode, but all I did in the mode is turn off the various animation features which slow things down somewhat. It appeared to work absolutely fine; I listened to a podcast on my walk home last night, then left the phone on charge while I did other things; it was only just before I went to bed and looked again to find it like this.

I've booted into Safe Mode and it appears much the same; can't get into Settings, icons still missing.

I'm expecting to have to do a Factory Reset - I believe I did a recent backup, so shouldn't be too harmful - but I'm still wondering somewhat about what may have brought this about and what I could do about it. Would there be any logs buried anywhere?

Edit: Cut The Rope did prompt me to "Restore progress from other version of Cut The Rope". That suggests the data's still knocking around somewhere.

Finally, hardware keyboard fanboys! A new phone with a qwerty keyboard!

Did it perhaps auto-OTA update to a newer Android version and botched something in the process?
