Wow they censored the dub version?

The Japanese broadcast wasn't censorsed at all.

Also really funny and fun episode again. This show is a joy every week.

Next week, zombies, yay!

Another anime disappointment, the Japanese have lost sight out what made anime big in the West.

Yes because they make anime specifically for the west and your personal tastes right?
Don't be silly.

Good episode. Not as good as episode 2 mind you but it was still a good episode. I kinda expected
the chick to be an alien as soon as she showed up.
When they said the episode will be full of fan service, they meant it. Can't wait for next week's episode.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.

Of course they censored the dub version. Even though it's on a late night block, there's still certain standards they need to abide by.

Also, I'm pretty sure Rafa is a troll.

Nope not a troll brah, not by a longshot. Im really disappointed in this anime and the saviors of anime. That prime slot show with weird Japanese monsters that had its ordered dut down that was done by Bones broke them.

Next episode has zombies, it can't possibly be unfunny... right?

... maybe?

The show hasn't every really gotten close to being funny so I expect it can.

As usual, this episode started to get good as soon as they stopped trying to push for jokes and just kind of let things develop from the story itself.

I still personally find Dandy to be too incompetent, even for the purposes of comedy, but maybe that's just me. I think the humour would work better if he were somewhat more relatable, but at the moment he's just modern-era Homer Simpson level incompetent.

Giant Hawaiian shirt robot. It hasn't been a great show, but it's certainly been entertaining.

But if the show is entertaining. Then hasn't it succeeded in being a good show?

I find some of the opinions in this thread bizarre. Were people really expecting this to be the anime to change anime forever or something?

I don't see other shows being held up to such scrutiny.

Anyway...how did toonami manage to edit the boob explodey scene?
They were kind of everywhere.

Episode 3
I think the show really needs to ditch the really cliched and formulaic thing where the first half of every episode is just boring build up with crappy try-hard jokes, and then the second half has lots of crazy animation and action. It feels like a total waste if I can't feel invested in the overall episode!

Maybe it'd been two halves of awesome crazy animation and action if it was just 13 episodes. This is like a monkey's paw wish when we all hoped for 26!

I don't think this is another Psycho-Pass case where everything felt artificially stretched. Chances are that these episodes would have been exactly the same if there were only 13 episodes.

The humor still isn't really working for me. There are a few visual gags in each episode that have made me giggle, but all in all I don't really find the show to be entertaining. I'll probably give it another shot when the whole thing is done and I don't have to wait a week for each new episode, but for now I think I'm gonna give Space Dandy a rest.

Yeah, I've never been particularly fond of this style of comedy, and Dandy isn't swaying my opinion.

Looking at the sub version of this episode, yeah there was no way they were getting away with that on US TV even if they use the cartoon argument lol, im surprised they got away with it on japanese TV.

Here's a comparison of how one part of the scene looks across the different versions, for those interested. :)

Warning: NSFW

Adult Swim (nipples blurred out, lighting normal): http://i.imgur.com/nawa2aK.jpg

FUNimation (no blurring, terrible contrast/brightness correction): http://i.imgur.com/StEIQZo.jpg

Tokyo MX (no blurring, lighting normal): http://i.imgur.com/5fZlHEd.jpg

Wow, talk about a five mins in MS Paint job.
So pointless, considering its being aired at a time for adults anyway.

Because kids totally don't stay up to watch Toonami on Saturday nights. There's a reason the network is still airing Bleach and Naruto.

To be fair, bleach and naruto would be kids shows in japan, which they are, but over here they are for teenagers at the youngest

I imagine they would have left it uncensored if they felt they could. Adult swim gets away with a lot of stuff. King Star King x_x

Show continues to be forgettable. I enjoyed the third episode even less than 1&2 (which both had great moments).

Space Dandy has been really good in general so far. Episode 3 was the least liked for me, not including the last 5 minutes. It just wasn't appealing to me, but of course not everything is made with everyone in mind.

Meow is a great character. QT is pretty cool too. Dandy also has his moments, but his character was especially flat in episode 3. His mistreatment of Meow has been funny in a way, but it's just doesn't hit when the only reason he turns back around to save Meow is for a Boobies Card and I think his character takes a hit. Is this really how a male protagonist should be represented? Is that the intention? I know the show isn't meant to be taken seriously and I wont, but I still wonder how this comes off to the general audience. Or maybe the general anime audience enjoys it. I don't know much about it. I have no problem with the Booby girl lady, or the Boobies restaurant, but Dandy himself gives me mixed feelings. The boobies joke is feeling immature though, like I'm suppose to giggle every time someone says "boobies."

Overall, I still think all the characters could benefit from a little character building. Just a little, so I can see different sides of them. Other than some parts in episode 3, I think the chemistry between the 3 are okay overall.

I had no problem with Dandy going back to save the boobies card. That was his whole motivation for that episode and that he'd be willing to risk his life for something so trivial is what makes it funny. Dandy has also shown a clear indifference to Meow in both episode 2 and 3 so it really doesn't seem that strange for him to abandon him. Meow is my favorite character for the record

I suppose you're right. Just the continual shallowness of the characters is something I wouldn't want. But its all personal opinions.

I think the potential for continuity and a straight faced storyline is something you can see in the DNA of Space Dandy, but something that will probably never come to fruition. I think if you're coming back week after week expecting that, you'll probably be let down. Who knows, though. We did hear that this was 90% comedy 10% serious, so the 10% could culminate into a meaningful narrative at some point.

I find this want for continuity so weird. It's not like the show has out and out contradicted itself episode to episode. You have the thread of the villains in the Statue of Liberty looking ship to get Dandy. Don't get that complaint at all.

Well when you have the character being on a planet that gets blown to smithereens and then you have Meow getting eaten by a Boobie Monster and staying within it for what is likely hours, enough time for digestive juices to have killed him, you just got to wonder what happened. But I don't mind not having the continuation from episode to episode. You can go into any episode just knowing that Dandy is a Alien hunter and he needs money. The way episodes end, you just know that you'll probably never know what happened next and that adds to the humor I think.

Everyone died in episode 2
They left Meow behind against in episode 3, though arguable they may have come back for him.. doubtful
They got a reward at the end of 3 when the alien was popular enough to be in a magazine. It's not everywhere but the continuity's not amazing.

In terms of why I want it, its because the story has proven it can be REALLY good. The ramen episode where they got a ton of backstory with old man ramen + they have a decently framed fight scene that led into other stuff with the girl? They could've done so much with that.

Right now the show exists in a weird area. Tons of people like it, and that's great for them, I don't mean to belittle it. However, they don't really have any storyline so far besides buzzwords like "ALIEN HUNTER" and "SPACE DANDY" and "GALACTIC FLEET". The characters have gotten almost no development either. Again, I would be fine with that if it seemed dead set on being a gag show, but it doesn't seem like it is. It feels to me like the shows stuck - it has a huge potential fanbase that wanna like it because of how good Champloo and Bebop were. It has more than the potential to be both serious and funny, like animes like Great Teacher Onizuka.

Instead, it's filled with half-hearted gags that follow memes and trends on the internet which seem uncreative at best. Have I not laughed once? No, but the jokes are so boring. Haha, boobies! for the 10th time in 14 seconds. Another episode shitting on Meow? Sweet, just the development I was looking for. Again, if anyone likes this - I'm genuinely happy for you. I just had higher hopes and I guess after watching anime for so long I'm leaning away from being wow'd by this. I just expected more, either a great laugh track or a great story, and got mediocre of each. I'm sure this is how a lot of fans feel, including a bunch here.

On the bright side, the animation's superb.

.....

It's a cartoon comedy.

But it's not a very good one. There are funnier cartoons and there are ones that have better character and story development while still being funner. Just because it's a cartoon doesn't mean it doesn't have to have plot development or characters, you can have both and make a really memorable show.

edit; Like I said, I'm not trying to argue, but you asked why people want continuity and that's what I responded with. Dimb hit the nail on the head, much simpler though.

Nothing wrong with being very episodic (to the point where each outing is basically another universe), although it'd be better if they could build up the world in a coherent way with each release. If it's going to be shallow, that's fine. But it's just not funny, and with a good portion of each episode devoted to trying to be funny, it just doesn't hold up right now.

I find it plenty funny. It's stupid, goofy fun. The only thing I haven't enjoyed so far was that lame attempt at "depth" with the sushi chef.
