OlliOlli Review Thread

Bought it.

Played it on my train ride to work.

BUYER'S REMORSE

First up, the bad. The entire UI is touch only. The Windows 8 Metro of Vita.

That shit pisses me off no end on the Vita. The whole point of the handheld is that it has lovely physical controls, so you'd better use them. If you don't, then you might as well be making iOS games.

Started the tutorial. Game crashed after completing the very first tutorial mission. Restarted, and game crashed again on a subsequent tutorial. Restarted Vita and played for another 15 mins or so without crashing.

It's really hard to get any feedback as to whether you have pulled off stunts correctly, due to the tiny on-screen size of your dude. The game is hard, with really narrow windows to do each action. I was struggling to get into the rhythm of when to press the stick and X to land and jump correctly.

I'm sure it will just take practise to get better, but the thing is after my first session with it, I don't want to. Didn't enjoy it at all.

Loving the game so far. It does take a bit of getting used to after playing games like Skate and THPS where you don't really need to focus on landing a trick after you do the motion. In OlliOlli, I'll forget to press the X right before landing cause I was having too much fun watching what was going on in the game. I do like the sidescrolling endless runner aspect of it quite a bit and the game is very accessible. The challange of the game has clicked me in that way that I really do want to master it, which speaks to how well the game plays when you get a run going.

I'd say it's worth buying at the PS+ if you're a fan of endless runners and skating games.

I am having quite a few crashes on my system though (launch Vita with 16GB card), about 10 in the hour I was playing. Deleting and reinstalling didn't seem to help. Hopefully they patch that soon.

It's amazing how much I suck at the game considering how simple the controls are. I keep hitting down on the analog stick to land, or hitting X to jump.

Me too! It's that old Tony Hawk muscle memory somehow resurfacing. It's amazing how I haven't played one since probably the beginning of last gen, and yet it returns like riding a bike.

Other than that, I'm really enjoying it. Has a weird Trials meets Tony Hawk vibe to it that keeps me restarting to get things juuuuust perfect.

Glad to read they are working on patches for the crashing.

Will be buying tomorrow when it hits EU, pretty excited, great impressions on the whole so far.

Does it have friend high scores though?

Just snagged it this morning. I'm not the biggest fan of hard as balls spelunky style game play. Normally the slow as a snail pace bores me to tears but this is a very different type of beast and holy shit is it good.

Simple, yes, but very fast paced and damn hard to get good at. At first glance it really doesn't seem worth the price of entry but after spending some time with it it's really worth every penny.

I just booted up my Vita to get this and now you guys are saying it's got crashing problems? Quite disappointing, I'll wait till it gets patched then.

edit: there's no friend leaderboards either? yikes. Should have been $5

If I was in US I might be tempted to wait out of principle and a bit of spite, but at £6 I'll be grabbing it tomorrow regardless, pretty excited it and it's unlikely they won't fix it.

Hmm if it's crashing loads for someone it may be worth a re-download? Sometimes it downloads bad, rarely though. They did say they were aware of the problem though?

there is a small problem .. but they are working on it..

that´s good to know.. because the game crashed on me when I had a good run..

Anyone know if patches are free btw? (for the devs - as in, not charged by Sony).

LORD...help me with this FUCKING RETRY BUTTON!!!

Having touch only UI is a crime in itself, but the placement of the on-screen buttons is fucked. At least let put the buttons on the right side so I can touch the buttons with my right thumb.

I thought I was the only one. I hate that shit to no end..

Game's fun, though. Really enjoying the music too.

I can't propose an alternative, but I'm not sure I like the way there's a giant "move list" for tricks. It doesn't strike me as very intuitive.

this is a mix between skate and Spelunky and I'm loving it.

I dont get why a few people have mentioned Spelunky when refering to this game.

Anyways played for a total of 20 minutes and had it crash 3 times...it seems great but Im not touching it again until it gets patched. Kinda frustrating to be in the groove and have it crap out.

moreso if skate ever had a daily challenge. It's obviously not randomly generated otherwise, but a new course every day is my reasoning for the comparison.

& yes, it's a vita exclusive! I wouldn't say that it would make a vita purchase worthwhile in itself but the device is amazing, has many other great games perfect for portability - and it has Persona 4 Golden :p

Yeah. Really loving this. Aced the first area. A few stars gave me trouble and I loved every single retry. Speaking of that, I am slamming that retry button like it's gonna get away if I don't and I have never had a problem with the touchscreen recognizing my touch.

Bought it and landed on my face twice in a minute. Perhaps I will need to learn the ropes more before just diving into the game head first.

Can someone elaborate on how the game is like Spelunky? There have been like 5 people that have made the comparison so far and it's got me intrigued...

Well there is a daily challenge for one thing and you got one shot. You can do practice runs though, but once you confirm it's hold on to your butt.

I think it's more like hotline miami where you try to get that perfect run but just one thing can ruin it. Fall and you gotta do it again. But when you get good, it's just a blur and you are just in the zone and nailing every trick and grind. Til you fuck up and gotta do it again.

Game is what a 2d board game should be. Rewarding and a test of reflexes. They do need better leaderboards is my chief complaint but the challenges are fun and it keeps me going. Although fuck spray cans, they go against every natural tendency in the game.

OlliOlli is a clever little game for sure. The challenges on each level are designed to encourage the player to improve his skills. It's not an easy game by any means, but it is still very enjoyable and satisfying.

I am somewhat annoyed by the frequent crashes. Hopefully, they'll patch the game soon.

It's good to see so many positive reviews. The Vita deserves a quality exclusive like this.

Olliolli scratches an itch that I missed for a long time. The two game series that have the most hours of my life are sf2 games and the thps series, by a large margin. Obviously most of that time is in multiplayer. That being said it is the most fun I have had in a skateboarding games single player mode since thps4.

It has that certain addiction factor, that if I just did this or that better factor. The thing where you start tapping the controls without thinking after a few hours of playing and nailing perfect grinds/landings. It went against my instincts for the first couple hours, but the controls are really starting to click and it is crack. Can't recommend this game enough if you are that type of player.

Friends leaderboards are a must with a patch, I would love to get a group of the old thps players competing for fun. 9/10

Hey guys, first up thanks for talking about and downloading OlliOlli, this is our first console title so we're hyped to see it being discussed online!

Reviews have been amazing too, we were not expecting that!

I've noticed some people have mentioned the crash bug, we have been made aware of this as you've seen from my tweet and are working on the fix as we speak.

We think its to do with pop ups, and you tend to get more pop ups when you;re either starting the game and/or in a place with a bad wifi connection. We're testing our fix now so we'll let you know how we get on.

Sorry to those of you who have experienced it, we know its not a good feeling, we hope its not affected you're enjoyment of the game too badly.

Also noticed some people talking about controls, we put a YT video up explaining how we feel its best to play, search for roll7games and the video is called 'OlliOlli, tricks explained!'

Thanks for your time and I want to start seeing some serious Daily Grind scores!

No. And that is my main gripe about it.

EDIT: Also hate the touch only UI. It doesn't add anything.

Is the game Vita TV compatible? I guess there's not a huge demand for that yet, but with the game coming out in Vita TV enabled regions like Hong Kong it would be a way for people to grab footage of it and give it more exposure.

Vita TV lacks touch right? Given the UI is touch only right now, it seems unlikely.

man... this is a nice game and I'm enjoying it, but it makes me really want even more now Skate. to be on the system. I know it's doable, but most likely it wont be done :(

No Vita Compatibility this came out near the end of our dev cycle, might have a look at it now though!

Could you comment on friends leaderboards? :) Seems to be rather frequently requested in here.
