Spencer: Black Tusk E3 '13 teaser was "a concept piece", not a in-dev game

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
Jesus. I'm not sure Microsoft is aware how bored the market got of hearing "HALO/GEARS OF WAR/FABLE/FORZA".

I understand that they want to minimize the risk of big-budget development by attaching a well-known franchise and concept to those projects, but apart from that, I feel the same way.

I am looking forward to Halo 5 and Uncharted 4, but at the same time this franchise madness is getting tiering.

I just really hope that they won't put Halo/Gears on an annual release schedule.

Not only was the game at E3 presented as a game, the studio was clearly working on an original IP:

Microsoft opens new video game studio in Vancouver:

Studio staff have an average of 12 years experience in triple-A games, the industry’s equivalent of Hollywood summer blockbuster movies — “big games, big teams, big budgets, long timelines,” said Crump.

“What that means is we are working on Microsoft’s next big entertainment franchise,” he said. “We’re not working on an existing franchise, we’re looking to build the next Halo here in Vancouver, for example, which is really exciting. We are building something from the ground up.”

“We have been officially green-lit by Microsoft executives to go ahead with the project that we’re on,” he said.

Spencer is caught in a pretty obvious damage control statement.

I was literally just thinking this when I saw this thread pop up. So the game they've been working on "for some time" was really nothing, and Gears is the title they're really working on.

I'll bet they wind up being a Gears of War only studio the entire gen.

Considering they just delivered their biggest launch ever solely so people could play a prettier version of Call of Duty, I don't think Microsoft really cares about people who are "bored" with Halo/Gears/Fable/Forza.

And if they are bored with those franchises, they've got something new called Titanfall for them. See? Everybody wins.

Smh...so they went from making an original IP from the ground up to working on Gears franchise due to the IP acquisition. That is sad.

So if you own a Xone what are the perspective for future new IPs? Where could they come from?

Powerstar Golf, Crimson Dragon, LocoCycle, and Ryse already came out and Quantum Break and Sunset Overdrive are on the way. Those are all technically new IP.

I don't know if I'm more disappointed in the fact the game that interested me doesn't exist or that they lied to the face of gamers to have a highlight reel.

Disappointing. While I'm glad to hear that Gears will live on, I would have preferred it if MS had founded a completely new internal studio for the franchise.

Black Tusk was assembled to create a new IP. They should have been allowed to do excactly that.

So any first party developed new IP for XB1?

So let me get this straight. These guys have been on Microsofts payroll for years and have been developing no game at all? Just concept pieces?

I enjoy Gears and I'm curious to see what this team will do with the franchise, but I get the feeling they're going to become a Gears factory like 343 is a Halo factory. That's disappointing.

This is revisionist bullshit, they announced before E3 that "Black Tusk's next game would be revealed at E3"

They (Microsoft) said it would be a Halo for the new generation, in fact, ..".an icon of the new generation."

And it's... another Gears of War?

Bull*cough*SHIT

Game got pulled in favor of another GoW, period, end of story.

Disappointing if true. Hope we get more information about this situation since that (I guess "concept") looked really good.

But "where could they come from"? Anywhere. They are clearly willing to partner with external developers. They clearly have a bunch of internal developers. Whether or not they choose to partner with anyone, internal or external, to make new IPs? I have no idea.

Yeah Black Tusk not currently working on a new IP does not equal no new IP's from MS. Gears of War is just one established franchise that Microsoft desperately needs.

Hope the wording of this is just damage control stemming from the cancelation of that Stealth Project, cause otherwise MS lied through their teeth at E3.

I love gears but if they had any sense they would have waited till 2017 to release a franchise that people right now are so fatigued about. New IP in house right now could sway people to buy an Xbox one on hype alone. A lot of people were very excited for black tusks supposed new IP. It was one of the reasons I bought an Xbox one. Its funny how they release this as if it is good news. Out of touch to say the least. That being said im a sucker and will buy the next gears no doubt.

Sadly not a single one of those is developed by an internal studio. I guess that's the game plan. Microsoft's teams keep churning our Halo/Fable/Gears/Forza/Kinect Sports, and we'll just buy some games here and there from other studios.

This feels an awful lot like a new original IP was cancelled in favour of cranking out another Gears game.

Hopefully they are doing both but I really don't know if Black Tusk is big enough to pull that off.

Tricky move.

That said, the black tusk project looked like a generic stealth shooter. Not sure why anyone was excited for it at all.

Gears is a much less generic series overall, even if it is not a new IP.

Judgment was a mistake, lets hope Xbox One can revitalize the franchise. 3 was amazing.

I posted this in the other thread, I am wondering if Epic and Msoft collaborated in making the infiltrator demo considering the fact that both were stealth games to begin with...

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I am happy to have GeOW on board, but don't want to lose a brand-new IP. My feeling is too conflict right now....

Phil, we need new IPs....

Lionhead announced last week that they are also working on a new IP

Could be making multiple games. Do we know how many people are employed at Black Tusk? And how long have they been around, I feel like I've been hearing their name for a while.

Studio was formed in late 2012, and I doubt they are big enough to support two games. Especially since one is Micorsoft second biggest franchise.

More new IP from AAA studios is always good so I am bummed.

Would have made sense for MS to found a new Gears studio similar to 343 with some old Gears vets heading it but I guess they didnt want to waste the resources and this was the easiest way to do it.

Also this continues the continuing saga of what the fuck is up with Epic?

I was expecting that studio to go through some weird changes this gen. Didnt expect this though.

They didn't though. They didn't give me the impression that that was their new game. It was just an in engine look at what black tusk was capable of. I did however get the impression that they would work on a new IP.
