Phil Spencer: Still have flagship games in development; "new IP critical"

Apparently it was a mock up they were floating around and shelved. They returned to the idea apparently after they started seeing rumblings about how bad their numbers look for January. I am not the source of this stuff, I'm just repeating what is being said, and trying to piece it into a coherent theory.

The theory that makes the most sense with all the divergent info we have is that this is controlled leak and the reason it's happening now is in response to many negative developments regarding the platform and potentially the NPD numbers for January. We'll have to wait to see if that's borne out or not, since I am not the source. But a leak of this magnitude does not happen randomly and out of the blue. Something made this happen.
I havent heard of the mockups before.. regardless we are all speculating this anyway.

The only thing hurting Microsoft is the price. It being less powerful then the PS4 has minimal effect on the majority of people in my opinion. If a gamer isn't interested in Tomb Raider then they'll likely never hear of the FPS differences between the platforms.

I have to agree that price is the biggest hurdle. My brother finally made up his mind and is buying a PS4. He said it saves him $100 to put on a game, PS+ ... and it's more powerful. We were both pro Xbox during Xbox/Xbox 360 gens, and while I also have an Xbox One, PS4 is my primary machine.

mortimer posted it, that it's no coincidence these things are happening now. He said it's a combo of the bad week of news and upcoming seriously bad Jan NPD numbers that made the leaks happen the way they did.

I trust mortimer, so I trust his perspective on this.
Eh... I don't get this. So in order to help the bad sales they just had, they announced the fact that they'll release a TitanFall Bundle (making people wait for March 11th to buy the system) and then announced a white bundle (making people who want a White Xbox One hold out even longer) and then announced a Sunset Overdrive bundle, once again being something that will make people hold off on buying a console.

Microsoft made some dumb mistakes that don't make any sense recently, but these are really silly. :p

In the end it turns out someone hacked into Spencer's laptop on the airport and is selling all that delicious stuff to various insiders while having a great time lol

Okay, we have clearly derailed this thread as well. Either Bish has gone to sleep or he is waiting to pull the trigger. I'm done, for the last time. This has been an exciting, confusing and frustrating day. Good night (again), Gaf!

Is Jan NPD really that much in the shitter for MS?

Doubt we'll get any numbers until the report day comes, but it'd be nice if the insiders could drop a hint of sorts.

When are the Jan numbers supposed to come out, anyway?

If tonight is any estimation then yes indeed. This completely overshadowed everything else on GAF. I couldn't even catch up with Nintendo until I wrapped my mind around this stealth PR. Man CBOAT better be straight.

Not if they drop another megaton stating

"Due to all the positive results, we are happy to announce that the xbox one would come out this March in an all white colorway"

Factories and production lines don't work that way.

At best, stuff comes out a week earlier. Not months in advance.

The white SKU must had been in plans since last year. Even if it's just a colour change, testing of molds, resistance to colour change, pigment testing, etc takes at least 8 weeks from my experience in plastics manufacturing.

Yes because TR will be the first and last time that a disparity in FPS ever happens this gen.

It's not from Mortimer's twitter, which is why I asked this question from the very beginning.

I understand why you asked. I will just say I am not speculating on that score. I am speculating as to whether or not this is happening for the reasons it is happening based on what mortimer has said, since I trust the man and it would make more sense than a random junior joining yesterday and for no reason immediately posting half of Microsoft's potential announcements for the next two years :p

Microsoft made some dumb mistakes that don't make any sense recently, but these are really silly. :p

We'll find out sooner or later the truth. This is a strange night either way one shakes it.

Anyway, we'll see. I don't want this thread to get locked too, so I'll bow out.

I don't think I understand the logic of leaking things so far in advance. Crackdown 3 sounds cool, but 2016 is a long ways off. If this really has to do with Jabnuary sales and bad press because of multiplatform gaps, this type of leak really isn't going to change anything.
Right. Which is why I go against the notion that the plant was planted to try and cover up bad news. MS has been fighting bad news since the X1 reveal, up to launch and throughout the launch. An info dump on a gaming forum isn't going to do much but get the fanatics excited for a bit just as the bad news gets them raging for a bit. To extremes in both cases.

If it really was like this, it doesnt make sense.
Why not wait for the data? In 10 dYs, nobody will give a crap about this leaks anymore.

And just common sense. Moments after I got into that leak thread I was calling ntkrnl out. These are orchestrated leaks.

Even if you're just looking at the quality of information you can see a pattern in how many projects are referenced/revealed without there being any real detail. It's a desperate move, yes, but I could see someone at MS, in their desperation, approving the names of these titles being revealed, knowing it would ripple across the enthusiast crowd and distract from their situation without totally ruining official reveals in advance.

Think about it, we all know Uncharted 4 is coming. Officially. But we have seen absolutely nothing of it. And we at no nothing about it other than the cryptic monologue from the teaser trailer. But the hype is real and palpable.

MS knows they can afford this. Tease all these projects in the pipeline to get enthusiasts to hold out on buying a PS4 or at least to feel confident buying a one. It's a risky, subversive move, but I think--judging by many people's reactions in that original thread--it's working. :/

Yep.

I was an avid 360 fan last generation, I bought the PS3 much later. The reason why I switched this generation is due to the reason you just stated. The PS4 is $100 cheaper and more powerful, that $100 was used on PS+ and two PS4 games at launch.

no it's not my speculation.

You'll have to ask him whether it's his opinion or whether he heard this is the case, I can't say. All I can say is it does make sense to me given my experience here and the magnitude of these leaks, and the timing.

I just don't really think those reasons make much sense. It sounds like it's really stretching. If anything, people will wait even longer to purchase a Xbox One for a TitanFall console, or later in the year, when the white one is out with a bigger HDD rather than to simply mask weak NPD numbers, when MS needs people to buy XOs now. Krnl went pretty awol in answering many of our questions from Platinum Games, to 1080p speculation after further pressing. I think Krnl being a legitimate leaker is more plausible than Microsoft purposely leaking a ton of information on purpose because of bad press especially with e3 around the corner. A lot of the announcements made today are e3 caliber. I don't even know what Microsoft is going to announce at e3 now.

I think they just went too far with the hardware leaks and that was their only real mistake. It did seem like they had them spun up and ready to be posted though. It's a curious series of events for sure

The ":/" at the end of your post is absolutely baffling. It's like you are disappointed that people are getting excited. Correct me if I'm misinterpreting your post.

Whoever leaked this 'used' Neogaf, as it allows more credible places like Verge to reiterate the original story instead of 'breaking' the rumours themselves. They only have to independently verify with their 'source', a source who was available to verify rumours almost in real time as the leaks were being released on the forum. We're witnessing some interesting tactics, I'll say that much.

The sheer quantity and type of information being leaked (including stuff like Titanfall DLC or a Platinum Games project) seems a bit... much for a controlled leak, especially if it's to "distract" from an NPD release that won't happen for another... what, two weeks?

Bullshit. Sorry. People will be touting MS's "lineup" for months.

As someone who prepares and updates list for listwarz, I'm actually dreading how the hell to proceed. It's quite unfair to put all the Halo games there and treat it as confirmed, but do not put the rumoured Parappa game that mort leaked, somewhat.

cough cough Sony pls leak some stuff too so that I can put there in the list 'games under leaks' cough cough

They aren't even that far behind. Some of these decisions are out there. Doing stuff like fast tracking BT to make a new gears instead of build something from scratch felt more like a reactionary thing then anything. Obviously they were going to buy the rights but why move this quick with it? Let that shit sit for a little longer. The last entry wasn't that well received. I can understand H2 10 year thing tho. There isn't a point to activate "desperate mode MS" yet

Yeah, the timing and quantity doesn't seem right for a controlled leak.

Bullshit. Sorry. People will be touting MS's "lineup" for months.

What lineup though? Halo, Gears, Forza, and Fable are all games everyone knew were coming. Crackdown 3 and Platinum Games in 2016 aren't very relevant right now. I don't see how it's such a big deal, MS must have something else if this was controlled. And if it wasn't sanctioned and that's all we're getting for the next three years it's even worse

Yes Verge's play in this gambit seems the oddest out of them all. I severely doubt it was as simple as right place right time with their sources. Seemed to be lined up and ready considering how quickly they posted it

That's a fair point. It really is a crazy turn of events if the leaks turn out to be true. Moreso if it was sanctioned although that will likely always been in question

Just read the thread again, it's full of hype even some 'I'm gunna buy an xb1' posts. It will be regurgitated across the internet, people will talk about the xb1 in a positive light. Others won't believe until e3 it will spread again after e3. It's likely very good and very sleazy marketing.

"Play?" Tom Warren has enough credibility to be above petty accusations like this.

Sorry to be baffling, I see how that might have come off. I think people totally have a right to be excited, but in my view of this as stealth marketing (which has gotten sooo under my skin due to recent events) it makes me feel wishy-washy that I perceive people to be "falling" for this.

Although, again, they're totally valid reasons to be excited. I just feel like we're being tricked again.

But what do I know. :/

Yep. The stuff leaked sounds is as if it's from an internal document titled the Xbox One 2014-2016 Strategic Plan.

What do you propose is his agenda then?

A random dude who works for Microsoft suddenly compromising his career to leak major stuff on GAF, why? He has posted more stuff than cboat ever has, in just one sitting and without taking any measure to hide himself (no weird talk), in a moment when Microsoft's apparently trying to catch leakers.

Makes no sense.

sounds like the same exact boat Epic was in after Gears 1 came out, Cliffy wanted to do so many other things but MS wanted sequels.

I have nothing but respect for Tom Warren, but he's been known to post bullshit news as well.

- Xbox Tablet, which was proven to be completely fake, despite having corroborated with Verge sources.
- Posting the pastebin rant from an Xbox dev, which Verge also said checked with their sources.

Sometimes his sources are also wrong.

I agree, a controlled leak of this type would only nneed a few big pieces of info to excite/distract. This was all over the place

I always hated those lists that stretch into the future for 3+ years. we end up obsessing about games like TLG and FFXIIIvs for years and if it never materializes we blame them for announcing it too soon.

I'm not claiming him to be infallible, but the poster I quoted seemed to be implying some sort of shady inside deal with Microsoft.

So now we are creating theories to support MS is doing horribly? Now that its out there, if a Titanfall bundle shows up, then: see? My theory of them doing so bad they created this bundle is true!

Custom bundles are nothing new, don't see why a Titanfall one is so out of the question.

You're absolutely right. People are being fooled that new games and and skus are coming. Wait-- that's a bad thing?

Don't strawman.

People are being manipulated is the fear.

I said people have a right to be excited by the reveals, but the nature of the leaks strikes me as sleazy, manipulative underground marketing.

And I admit fully that I could be 100% wrong.

The verge article in question is the first one posted on the subject and used by at least engadget I think as their source on the news. I didn't mean that Verge was absolutely in on it but that there was a real possibility their sources hadn't really verified it.

Most leakers do not write in encrypted text, so I wouldn't say he made no attempt to hide himself. He could just be a leaker.
