I wouldn't say GitS is at all as household as Godzilla.

How good is Beat's English anyhow? He's in the role of a fairly articulate character. Oh, who am I kidding? The script won't even be good.

Im not saying they are equal but they are in that tier where Americans have likely heard of it but don't exactly know or have a great attachment to the original source material.
Evangelion probably a tier below.

Call me crazy but as far as Japanese material goes i'd probably say 90's DBZ and Pokemon were the tier above that.

We get to go through this all again if the Alita movie ever happens.

Oh it's happening, they've already cast the lead, Rosa Salazar and set a release date of July 20, 2018.

Hold up, are you saying DBZ is more recognized than Godzilla. My parents' parents know Godzilla, but if I show them Goku I don't think grandma opto is going to start singing CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA

The source material itself.
Godzilla is recognizable itself but talking the entire material.
In the 90's i'd say Dragon Ball Z overall was bigger than any specific Godzilla media in America.
Godzilla however stayed somewhat relevant while DBZ died off

Obviously an American grandpa wouldn't sing that because the popular American version I don't even recall having it.

Edit: would put Gundam in that middle tier with Gits and Godzilla as well.

Why isn't she black, or Asian, or Hispanic

"The movie isn't about nations!" is a non-answer to "why is she the billionth instance of a non-white character being whitewashed." It's an excuse invented, where the actual reason for the whitewashing was business. What a dishonest person to offer that answer.

Kaneda went from Asian to white. Light turned from Asian to white. Motoko went from Asian to white. This is a pattern, and it has nothing to do with "different region" or "international locations."

They've been very, very careful. Obviously, there’s some new imagination, as well. I mean, like anything, when you’re making a movie, you’ve gotta bring your whites.

I don't agree with this at all

We get to go through this all again if the Alita movie ever happens.

They cast a Hispanic actress in the lead role. Yes, Donna Dickens complained about whitewashing with a Hispanic lead, she works for HitFix, they don't care about accuracy.

This movie isn't going to bomb because of a questionable casting decision. It's going to bomb because Fast and the Furious 8 is coming out two weeks later, thereby minimizing whatever window Paramount had for making money on this. And there's nothing stopping Universal from moving the release date up to do a drive-by trolling on the competition.

Is this the first they've said she is just "the Major" rather than pretending she's Kusanagi? Because that's relieving

I don't see an issue with them just taking the framework of the original and working from there (taking liberties with castings and such), it's more of an issue when you are saying "look it's those exact characters and that world on the big screen!"

Expectations are still at rock bottom but it'd be nice to at least get a solid cyberpunk film out of this, albeit a poor adaptation of the source material

The anime film did this, far more dour and contemplative than the manga, set in China, big changes to personalities of the charters.
As big as a fan as I am I don't think it would be bad to just move it whole sale to the US.
GitS has more to offer than Japanese family names and Japanese backdrops.

And people wonder why it's hard for others to take anime seriously, sometimes.

If you bother to watch the anime film you'll see the Major doesn't have a strong sense of connection to her body. It is fully artificial, they even show an identical looking one. The nudity (in the anime) isn't for sexual tingles.
She doesn't even care about ending up in a creepy doll looking thing at the end, and by the second film exists from body to body.

Not that I'm against the casting. But Rosa Salazar is both Hispanic and White as a Cuban American. 62 percent of America is Non Hispanic White, the lowest it's ever been. In the 80's, Non Hispanic Whites made up 80 percent of America. Including Hispanic Whites with Non Hispanic Whites raises the White demographics back up to 77 percent of America.

Remember that half of all Hispanic and/or Latino Americans also identify themselves as White.

In Alita there's nothing really inherently japanese about the location or story outside some aspects, slight narrative themes and a few characters. L But since Gally is the vocal point of the story, her "race" is ambiguous given her origin. Its not as important outside of her being female and having a actress at least physical similar would be perfect.

So if any property could be international it would be that series.

No one should have a problem with it given the material. If they're a fan. Battle Angel is not GITs. The worlds of those two are inherently different and only share a basic framework.

If this movie bombs I'm willing to bet it will be blamed on ScarJo's marketability and not on the whitewashing. That's what's most disappointing.

I'm 100% positive that this movie is going to under perform. Box Office has not been kind to non-YA large budget science fiction films. Oblivion, Edge of Tomorrow, John Carter, After Earth, Tomorrow Land, Elysium, Jupiter Ascending, Ender's Game, Chappie, Transcendence, Dredd, etc.

I don't think today's audiences give a shit about Ghost in the Shell type science fiction. I feel like it'll do Total Recall type numbers.

I think it would do better box office wise after Blade Runner 2 and after Cyberpunk 2077 (if that game is successful I'm sure people, esp youngsters would be interested in Cyberpunk movies then) also if the Netflix series of Altered Carbon is a hit.

Well, in SAC she's basically always called "The Major", and it worked fine there...

I'm skeptical about the movie in general, but not about this.

Not gonna argue, I just think if Fox goes all-in on marketing to Hispanics, they can rake in the dough. They have Salazar starring, and Rodriguez directing. Look at what happened to Fast and the Furious after Universial went after that demographic.

Well obviously ScarJo marketability is supposed to alleviate the race concerns. It is tough job for ScarJo but somebody has to do it.

Is there a reason we consider Scarlett Johansson to be a legitimate box office draw? She's been in a lot of films that were successful at the box office, but outside of Lucy, it's difficult to come to the conclusion that said films were successful because of her.

This film will give a good idea if she is or not considering that this is the type of film that typically under performs at the box office.

Shes one of like 3 female actresses, that can lead action movies

With the other two being Kate beckinsale and Mila Jokavich

“I don’t think it was just a Japanese story. Ghost in the Shell was a very international story, and it wasn’t just focused on Japanese; it was supposed to be an entire world,” he said.

Weird, considering the first episode in the Stand Alone Complex series was a episode about a American Empire (guess Trump won) Intel agent trying to steal Japanese state secrets. And then every episode being pretty much set in Japan.

She is also the only one of the three not married to the director of said action movie franchise.

Should just made the Major blonde and european tbh I think that one that bothering me the most the fact they insisting this movie Major isn't image of Kusanagi the japanese.

And people wonder why it's hard for others to take anime seriously, sometimes.

To be fair, this is an essential part of the story as far as the anime adaptation goes.

"who slips into my robot body?" being part of that text. To the anime version at least, the nudity was there to confuse (targets as well as viewers) and show its meaninglessness when its all robotics anyway. What would you care what a robot looks like?
So this is not a moot or sexist point to bring up in the context of GotS. I mean, it's in the title after all.

I don't mind white washing btw. It isn't meant to be a 1:1 adaptation anyway. But I don't give a rats ass about Scarlet Johanson. Then again, a female version of Keanu Reeves's acting ability is very suited to play a robot.

Oh bullshit. None of those scenes were nude in the manga. The Major strips down for no good reason in the movie.

LOL.
The movie treats nudity and sex much better than the manga does, there's not even a comparison.

No wonder Shirow went on to do porn/soft core comics after that.

Oshii's movies have very little in the way of gratuitous sexy shit, compared to the manga or even SAC and its constant butt shots and swimsuit outfits.

Director: We've added a ton of diversity to this film.
Interviewer: Even the main character?
Director: No, God no.

ScarJo is way more famous than any Asian actress on the planet and has experience being in big-budget action movies, so it's understandable why they would want to cast her. But it certainly is a reflection of difficulties minorities face when being cast in Hollywood movies. If anime becomes the next oil well studios start pulling from, we are going to see a lot of it in the future. Get ready for Evangelion with Sean Carson and Death Note with Light Turner (oh wait...)

Yeah, the difference is that no one is going to defend the fetish outfits of the manga while the movie always gets the "muh artistic nudity" crowd out while there's no reason for nudity in

I could go either way on the nudity in the movie, i accept the argument of showing the major's alien relationship with her body and her sexuality through it, and this is reinforced by how un-sexy every "nude" scene in the movie is, as well as how sober the costumes the major wears, otherwise are (the same can't be said of the manga nor SAC).

In the manga you have several explicit sex scenes, you have constant sexualization, oily skins, thongs, swimsuits and all the shebang.

I'm not even one to demonize it necessarily, i like the GitS manga, even with these quirks, but i think if you're one to be embarrassed by this stuff, the movie does a better use of it, than the manga (or any other GitS product, including the PS1 game with Motoko getting wrapped up in bondage cables) does.

The Major wears very sober outfits in the manga - the cover page is probably her most revealing outfit outside of that one sex scene. Of course the most of the other female characters wear outfits you might find in a sex shop.
And it's not like I'm embarrassed by the nudity, more like facepalming about the people who want to have it in every adaption.

Meh.

Yeah it's a very international movie

But we're still not gonna have a non-white/asian lead in it. Deal with it. But trust us it's gonna be good

I'm not the one claiming that it is "an essential part of the story".

Would it have helped if I had said: "can be considered" instead of 'is'? Also, there is the " as far as the anime adaptation goes" after that.

I obviously don't know the manga, but guess what, neither does anyone else. I did suspect the OVA's of Shirow's work are highly exploitive though. I re-watched Tank Police last week and the trailer for the next dvd had the line: "and the return of the sexy cat ladies" as an actual marketing line in it, so yeah, there is that 'holy cow no' in the room. Guess that's those radical 90's for ya.

Also, doesn't the GitS 2 anime go to reeeeaaally dark places (I vaguely remember it, but I'd have to rewatch it)? Even if it's not on the surface level in the manga, clearly the topic of slipping values of body and mind are of importance in the anime adaptations.
There are obviously classier ways to show that, but props shot and partial nudity (like exposed back) are probably still 'needed' to some degree. Just not in a perv manner. And I did not intend to suggest them as being mandatory.

I don't think it's a necessity for the story either, i mostly reject the fact that Oshii forced it in the movie, when i think he actually reduced the sex appeal from the manga big time.
The (Oshii's) movie could've worked with or without it, but the way it's presented, it's less exploitative than it looks from the posters selling the movie, exactly because of how aseptic it is, as i mentioned.

But another interpretation of the story can certainly work without it, i also don't think in live action it'd be as easy to make it look as plastic-y and as cold, as it does in the animated movie.

Well, I wouldn't have been quite so harsh then :p
Yeah, Innocence starts off with the ghost-dubbing plot before veering off to do its own thing. In the manga it's a corrupt corporate executive copying smuggled kids to bots because they can't compete with their software:

And personally I'd rather take the Major debating with a friend of hers to highlight the experiences of a full body prosthetic

YWpIGcU.png

or when she needs to ditch her main body to escape and all that's left of her, or rather, all that is her is just a brain in a metal case + a battery to keep her alive

Oh, I actually agree. I think Hispanic and Latinos are likely to increase in leading roles than Asian Americans. Although Fast and Furious raked in all that money because it appeals to every young ethnic demographic.

Bear in mind, this role was originally offered to Margot Robbie.

GitS is about identity. The political backdrop is quite meaningless overall. Heck, Stand Alone Complex is... well... all about the Stand Alone Complex of how actions come into being. Individual 11 is all about Internet Jesus.
