I've actually played no more than a couple of hours of it but it's maybe a good analog. Kids doing Japanese school kid stuff + mechs + a map-centric city battle system. Close enough.
It's actually a really cool simulation mecha RPG by Alfa System, the guys who made Oreshika and Castle Shikigami and Elemental Gearbolt. It's huge in Japan, never came out here. Well, not sure if it's huge, but it had like three games in the series.
