Steps: 55,783
Play Time: 347

1. Pokemon Moon - 84 hours
2. Stella Glow - 71 hours
3. Fire Emblem Fates - 59 hours
4. Bravely Second - 47 hours
5. Monster Hunter Generations - 29 hours

About the same total hours as I played in 2015. My steps are from going to and from work and traveling through airports.

Has anyone else played Stella Glow? It's part of my backlog but I've been hesitant to start it because of some of the lewdness. Outside of that, heard the actual gameplay was solid. Curious to hear impressions.
I enjoyed the tactical turn based combat, which can get pretty damn challenging towards the end. The characters all fight differently, and are fun to play. The story was good enough to keep me going from combat encounter to combat encounter (the main reason I was playing). There's a haremy vibe that I could have done without, but you can actually avoid most of that by spending time with other characters (which builds up their loyalty rather than affection). You can also shut down any interest from the other NPCs if you want. The Final Fantasy Tactics approach to combat made it all worth it for me.

How accurate are those hours? I mean what if you paused the game and left them there, would that count?

They count as long as the game is running, i.e. not in sleep mode or on the Home screen.

Edit: My stats -

Steps: 82,267
Play Time: 238:54

Ace Attorney 6 - 61:44
Super Smash Bros - 50:33
Zero Time Dilemma - 23:59
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D - 20:56
Senran Kagura 2 - 15:59
Swapdoodle - 13:21
Project Mirai DX - 10:47

Everything else under 10 hours.

Definitely the least I've played the 3DS out of any year, but there were more games I played seriously than last year (in which only Smash Bros, SmileBASIC, and Majora's Mask 3D were above 10 hours). In 2015 Smash and SmileBASIC were 180 hours and 120 hours, so those alone were why I still played more overall last year than this year.

I've mainly played Vita recently

Steps: 35,332
Play Time: 73 Titles / 245:48

  • Pokémon Sun - 38:48
  • Yokai Watch 2: Bony Spirits - 28:46
  • 7th Dragon III Code: VFD - 25:38
  • Nintendo Badge Arcade - 24:51
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf - 11:13
  • Fire Emblem Fates - 9:14
  • Hyrule Warriors Legends - 8:52
  • Pocket Card Jockey - 8:49
  • Dragon Quest VII - 8:13
  • Return to Popolocrois: A Story of Season Fairytale - 6:56

Honestly less than I thought, but Ive been spending lots of time on PS4 and Vita.

It's a great SRPG. There really isn't much lewdness at all, don't know where you heard that. Maybe with some of the character designs but there aren't any fanservice images or CGs or anything like that, and the dialogue is relatively tame when it comes to those sorts of things. I mean the tuning is a little...suggestive but you only ever see sillhoettes of characters. I would recommend it.

Okay, thanks -- that's good to hear. I've moved over to the Vita and PS4 but perhaps I should officially close the chapter on the 3DS by playing through Stella. My wife already finished it and I vaguely remember the tuning being quite hilarious.

8. Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward (30:49)
9. Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice (28:21)
10. Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies (25:55)

Some odd placements on here. Particularly how Dual Destinies was from my replay of the game this year before Spirit of Justice came out.

This is my lowest year of 3DS use since the system launched. But I have not done much gaming in general this year.

Anywho,

1. Dragon Quest VII ~60hrs
2. Etrian Odyssey V ~28hrs
3. Shin Megami Tensei IV ~18hrs
4. Phoenix Wright Dual Destinies ~12hrs
5. Rune Factory 4 ~8hrs

About 150hrs all together. 550k steps.

I didn't even know about the Activity Log until now. Well, here's what I got.

1. Hyrule Warriors Legends (389:47)
2. StreetPass Mii Plaza (14:38)

I have way more hours in Smash, but from last year. I don't even have 5 games lol.

Very good to hear, thanks! Alright, you guys pushed me over the edge. I'll give Stella a chance. Currently finishing up Danganronpa 2 trophy hunting.

I almost always carry my 3DS around, but don't play it that much. I typically end up doing stuff online on my phone during commutes.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
I didn't even know about the Activity Log until now. Well, here's what I got.

It really is a very useful, userfriendly, and forward thinking application. Should be mandatory in all new hardware unless Nintendo has some kind of patent on it?

Wow that's... A lot. Then again my 3DS has always been my primary system so I guess it makes sense, and this was a great year for the system too.

116 titles tho? I wonder if homebrew affects that part lol.

Pokemon Soul Silver- 1:14
Mighty Switch Force- 1:00
Mario Golf (GBC)- 1:00
Bravely Default- 0:54
And then a few odds and ends.

Slightly down from 2015 (174) and 2014 (193). With my JRPG backlog between the 3DS and (mostly) DS, if I dedicated myself to this system for a year I would easily do 1000 hours. The only problem is that I have as many hours with Counter-strike this year as I do with my 3DS in general

2016 stats:
Steps 698,727
27 titles, 510 hours played

Top five:
Monster Hunter Generations 230.55
Fire Emblem: Fates 79.12
Dragon Quest VII 62.58
Final Fantasy Explorers 42.06
SMTIV Apocalypse 39.11 (so far- still playing this).

I don't think I'll beat my all-time high of 260+ hours in Monster Hunter 4U last year.

Top five for this year

Dragon Quest vii - 92:32
Pokemon Sun - 71:44
Bravely Default - 68:50
Yokai Watch - 45:15
Fantasy Life - 43:09

Pretty awesome year, even if my usage was a little down. The top 4 were my first runs at those games, and I just haven't tired of Fantasy Life. Sad to see Animal Crossing fall out of the top five but my partner got all the new vehicle cards etc so I'll just in at some point no doubt.

Strange to think with Switch coming the use of the 3ds might drop dramatically next year, I kind of hope some software keeps coming out on it. Yokai Watch 2 next year will very definitely get a purchase at least, and maybe the Pikmin game.

Aside from Dragon Quest VIII, I'm really hoping we get localisations of Monster Hunter Stories and Etrian Odyssey V, that'll round the 3DS off nicely for me. Also Blaster Master Zero has me interested, loved those games back on the day. Mercenary Saga 3 looks like it should be out soon too.

Top 5
1) Rune Factory 4 - 82:34h (my new most played on 3DS :O )
2) Picross 3D: Round 2 - 46:18h (still playing tho)
3) Pocket Card Jockey - 42:29h
4) Solatorobo - 21:14h
5) My Nintendo Picross TLOZ - 10:02h

Overall a solid year, I used 3DS more than 2014,2015 and probably (still 5 hours to go) 2011. I was especially glad to have liked RF4 as much as I hyped it, not something which happens that much.

For a fun note: I spent 1:35h using the diary, thanks backloggery needs!

Next year should be worse I guess, I'll concentrate con Wii/Wii U stuff. Still A-Train, SMT Overclocked and Luigi's 2 are planned so the counter could reach 200h once again.

EDIT: just noticed I passed 1500 total hours, woohoo

I can't believe I spaced on dragon quest viii Hah, stupid. Monster hunter stories would be great and I forgot Ever Oasis too, it could well be a great year. The type of games the 3ds excellent at tend to do me forever so really a handful like that would do.

i'll guess i''ll add my hat into the mix

2016

Total steps 59,689

Total Playtime 212:01

1) Pokemon Sun 115:35
2) Pokemon Picross 32:24
3) Rhythm Heaven Megamix 18:00
4) Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon 7:17
5) Hyrule Warrior legends 7:11

i just started Hyrule Warriors so that time will go up before the end of the year

i'm also sure i'll be coming back to Rhythm Heaven for sure and maybe Mystery Dungeon

I was especially glad to have liked RF4 as much as I hyped it, not something which happens that much.

Out of interest, have you played story of seasons/if so how did it compare? I really wanted to like story of seasons but I struggled with the pacing of the game. Does Rune Factory get into things a bit faster?

This won't be entirely accurate, since I bought a N3DS in like, April.

Total steps: 5,796

Playtime: 207:23

1. Bravely Second 42:27
2. Dragon Quest VII 38:41
3. Picross 3D: Round 2 37:22
4. Fire Emblem Fates 28:43
5. Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse 23:29

I'm going to wait to post my Log, since I'm 100% confident the bottom of the list will change before the week and a half is up. Looking at the numbers as they stand, it's definitely lopsided in a way that I don't think anybody in the thread has matched so far.

Nope, it's in my wishlist but I'm trying to figure out if Stardew Valley on Steam could be enough for me in the next years as for farming games.

About RF4, it's designed to be played in many different ways. For example, if you do not like farming, it can be pretty much avoided. As for the pacing, the sense of progress is quite there and goes parallel with the story/dungeon crawler part (so it can be fastened if you want it).
Overall it's preferrable to the average Harvest Moon imho, but I like them too, so it's difficult to say if it could work for you.

2. Fire Emblem Fates (101:05)
3. Pokemom X (29:29)
4. Pokemon Blue (23:28)
5. Pokemon Sun (18:08)

So... Pokemon *laughs*

The next three were Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, Pokemon Bank, and Pokemon Y...

Steps: 85,689
Hours: 370:13

Pokemon Y and OR counted for more than half of my play time since this summer was when I finally decided to get a living dex. Animal Crossing is of course 3rd, with Pokemon Sun a close 4th even though it's only been out a bit over a month. I'm going to keep using my 3DS a ton since I've only been playing it more and more and I have a big backlog and a decent list of 2017 games to look forward to. I can't wait to see my progress next year.

2016
Steps taken: 68,550
Play time: 39 titles / 420:39

1.) Pokemon Sun / 95:59
2.) Bravely Second / 88:34
3.) Fire Emblem Fates / 79:51
4.) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Spirit of Justice / 32:00
5.) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Dual Destinies / 26:32
6.) Animal Crossing: New Leaf / 18:55
7.) Pokemon Red / 18:11
8.) Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call / 8:07
9.) Pokemon Omega Ruby / 6:39
10.) Nintendo eShop / 6:26

It honestly felt like I played a lot more than I did, but I guess that's what happens when you play RPGs haha. Pokemon reigning supreme is no shock and I really enjoyed my time with Bravely Second. I'm still not even finished with my Revelations playthrough of Fates but Birthright was a good time too, and it's pretty obvious I discovered the magic of the Ace Attorney series this year, back in late August. Nintendo drug me back into Animal Crossing for a bit via the nifty update but man... I've already spent a huge chunk of time with it and starting over from scratch kind of sucked.

This seems to be my second best year, close behind 2014's 160k steps and 454 hour play time. Makes sense considering I took some time off from school during both years and thus had some more time to kill. This year had a better spread of hours over a bunch of good games though, whereas nearly half of 2014's time was spent on one game (Pokemon X, 207 hours, though in my defence that was when I was working on my living dex). So I guess I can say that 2016 was a great year for my 3DS! Great news, considering it very well might be my last full year with it.

8. Kirby: Triple Deluxe (4:54)
9. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (4:44)
10. Parascientific Escape Cruise in the Distant Seas (4:36)

Three years ago I managed to play for 290 hours but in a year in which I replaced my PS4 with a PS4 Pro, got an Xbox One and an Alienware R3 PC I think it saw a lot of usage.

Thanks for the response, really appreciate it :) I actually love farming and jobs like that in these games haha Story Of Seasons just doled things out reaaaally slow. For example, I quite like Animal Crossing's pacing in the first week, but SoS I just don't know, I had some issues with the fun bit being blocked off for so long. Definitely take what you wrote onboard though, might have to grab it at some point. I honestly keep forgetting about it because it's digital only here.

It's fantastic -- the best surprise of last year for me. And despite that it looks like a pervy game for weebs, it's really not. Awesome game. Great SRPG gameplay, surprisingly good story, and an excellent soundtrack. I actually enjoyed it way more than Fire Emblem Fates.

2. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Spirit of Justice 53:37

5. Animal Crossing New Leaf 37:01

Was a good year for the 3ds, got a n3ds in February and played 2 times as much as last year, surprised by the Ace Attorney time since it felt like it went by fast.

Nothing too surprising, after X there's a sharp dropoff this year where Smash, Sun, and Pokemon Yellow are all about half of it and then even less for other stuff. This was the year of Pokemon (and new Fire Emblem obvs) for me, whereas last year was the year of "catch up on all the shit I missed because I didn't have a 3DS yet".

I played both and Rune Factory compares very favorably - I totally agree that Story of Seasons felt like a slow slog, especially comparing it with Rune Factory 4. The farming is a lot lighter though, but you should really try it if you felt the way you described about Story of Seasons. It has much more stuff to do and is super entertaining - I couldn't put it down once I started.
Story of Seasons was very overwhelming at first - I hadn't played any of the more recent Harvest Moons and had no idea how to deal with seed sheds, bee stocks or anything...
Rune Factory starts very basic and then you basically can decide how deep you want to dive into any aspect of the game. You can get very complex with the crafting, dungeon crawling or farming - I never ended up fully utilising fertilizers or raising giant vegetables or gold fruit for example, and you don't have to if you don't want to. Same with pet catching and training. But it's all there, and very accessible.
They had 1 sale on it only in EU so far, but it's worth it at full price even digital only.

Those top two are my GotYs so it makes sense to me. Omega Ruby is only that high because I was getting a living Dex this summer and OR was my main consolidator. I probably put in another ten hours or so into Sun and Fates that didn't count due to soft resets.
I played a ton of DS games too, but they don't show up because I bought a DSLite.

That's surprising because Fire Emblem, at least Conquest anyway, has some very solid gameplay. Sure it has some weak spots here and there but to place Stella Glow above Fire Emblem is high praise.

What are some of the things you didn't like about Fire Emblem?

I paid good money for this Dynex!

The writing was impossibly bad in Fates, and I didn't like some of the simplifications they made to the gameplay. FWIW, I loved FE: Awakening.

Stella Glow, to me, felt like a continuation of the SRPGs that came out on the PS1. The aesthetics, the story, the mission layouts -- it felt nostalgic, but great.

I could have sworn I had about 100 hours in Picross 3D (the DS one) on my 3DS, but it doesn't show up in the overall activity log. I might be missing some records.
