Testing a theory: did most of the people in this thread own/favor the SNES or the Genesis/Mega Drive?

Owned the Genesis, but favor the SNES. SNES has Kirby, Zelda, Earthbound, Mario World, Chrono Trigger, Megaman X, and a better controller for Street Fighter 2. Genesis has Sonic, Eternal Champions, Kid Chameleon, Altered Beast, Road Rash, and Vector Man. I liked both, I loved playing Kid Chameleon, I never beat it, but looking back I definitely like SNES more. Genesis has superior music though.

Anybody got a good spotify playlist for this type of music? Fell in love with it and fell out of love for rap in the last few years...

Heh, that was my theory. I owned a Genesis (got my SNES afterwards) and I feel like this kind of music harkens back to the Genesis sound. But that may just be me...

Nite Sprite's Strut Remix Compilation just came out, has remixes from

First album = amazing. First single from second album = great. Second album as a whole = disappointing I thought.

I respectfully disagree, really dig the second album.

I liked his second album a lot more than his first. I love songs like Run My Heart and I Don't Care.

Cool. Mirror in the Dark is my fave. I have a musical orgasm at 2:28 every time.

edit: Also, I echo TUROK's sentiment regarding Oblivion. That track skyrocketed near the top of my most played songs in iTunes after I saw the movie.

Anybody ever heard of Memorex?

http://vimeo.com/55006097

50 minutes of 80's influenced synth stuff from various artists mashed together with a shitload of VHS era adverts/commercials. Super interesting/nostalgic even if you don't like the music.

Also I'd recommend VHS head, loads of 80's/VHS era themed stuff with a glitchy edge to it. Has one of the very few albums where I actually like all the songs (that's extremely rare for me).

Visit the weekly segment 'Suicide Sundaes' on Earmilk. It is not exclusively Cyberpunk, but a majority of it is and there is a lot of free music too.

Just in case it hasn't been mentioned yet you should check out NewRetroWave and Maniac Synth on YouTube, they're both compilation channels for this exact kind of stuff.

Pointing this out as well. Absolutely terrific selection of music.

Opinions on College - Heritage?

It has some nice tracks and some mediocre ones, but overall it is pretty awesome. I am a major sucker for tracks like Une Ville Silencieuse, but that's just my taste. I think College does well to capture that somewhat magical fantasy vibe at the same time keep it in the 80's synth/cyberpunk genre. Not unlike Pacific!, I guess.

Not that Empire of the Sun belongs in this genre specifically, but they do a good job at creating a futuristic fantasy world in their videos that fits with the music. It does remind me a bit of the 80's Synth/Cyberpunk stuff and they actually have some songs that are this genre, like 'Without You'.

You could listen to some 80s music.

It's funny, I was around back in the 80's, and none of us were really 'listening' to music like this. It was being shoved in our faces all the time on television and cheesy pop videos, but we didn't like it. Listening to Kavinsky makes me feel like I'm watching a Miami Vice episode. Part of me wonders how/why this "80's style" music ever became a thing, and part of me really, really loves it.

These two generally make me think 'cyber-punk', but it's more on the cold, dystopian, or even kind of predatory side of that I guess. And it's from the early 90's if that makes a difference.

So, this small indie title called GTA5 came out, and goddamn it has a Tangerine Dream soundtrack!

Check out tracks like North Yankton Memories, No Happy Endings and You Forget a Thousand Things for some excellent retrowave :D

Oh, Eddie Murphy's Party all the Time is also on one of the radio stations!

Mirror FM and Space FM in general contain a lot of good tracks, i'm pretty sure one of these was supposed to be that Kavinsky FM that got cancelled.

These seem pretty great.

Thankfully Rdio has both of them on there, listening to volume 1 right now.
